    • how to draw west coast farmhouse pastel

This is a typical representation of the farms scattered around the west coast of South Africa. This one is still very reminiscent of the buildings used by the early settlers as they moved up northwards from the Cape.

Most have small windows and thatched roofs. The open kitchen has a hearth where a wood fire is made and a cast iron pot is hung over the coals. The hearth is normally built onto the outside of the buildings as can be seen in this photograph.

Some farm houses do not even have any trees for shade. The summer months can be very hot. The lady of the house is quietly hanging up the week's washing. You can just see her at the corner of the house.

We will be starting to use a few pastel pencils in this class.
