  • Rocks at Beach in Pastels

    • rocks in pastels

There are many places where one can look up and down the beach and there is not a rock in sight - in the sea or even anywhere for that matter - not a rocky hill or mountain. Also, the only defense you have is to throw sand in the eyes of your opponent. Not a stone to throw at a dog!

Rocks along the beach and surf are often challenging -  but  not so much as when you have a large mountain in the view you want to paint or draw. There are so many light and dark patches and hollows and juttings that it makes on dizzy just to contemplate painting them.

Don't panic - because in this lesson you will learn how to:
      1. Take time to observe
      2. What to put in and what to leave out
      3. How to simplify what you see
      4. How to brighten up a dull even looking painting

  • Beach Dunes in Pastels

    • Beach Dunes in Pastels

      sand dunes

"Water, water, everywhere - not a drop to drink!" - Ancient Mariner.
Where have all the rocks gone? Ah, well! Never mind, we will just have to make do with all the sand about us.
One would think that sand would be boring to paint.

Actually sand dunes often make for very spectacular paintings. one example is an oasis in the middle of the desert dunes. Sometimes a simple looking subject can be enhanced by a little imagination. Other times a section of a dune may just be the right composition with the right object in it for a focal point.

In this lesson we will learn how to:
      1. Look at dunes (properly)
      2. Choose a subject
      3. Modify the colours
      4. "See" Shadow details

  • Transparent Waves in Pastels

    • Transparent Waves in Pastels

      transparent waves in pastels

So often we are taught to take photogrphs with the light either from the side or from the back us.
Seldom do we take them against the light because of the silhouette effect and the resultant loss of colour.

At times these can be striking pictures. One of these times is when the light is shining through the waves just before they crash. The most spectacular is  moments before the crashing starts. At this stage the sheet of water is at it's thinnest and almost looks like a "stained glass window".

In this lesson you are going to learn how to:
      1. Draw the shape of the wave(s)
      2. Sort out the colours
      3. About the spray
      4. Water reflections
      5. draw the foam streaks.
