Clivus

I love your scumbled fish.  Isn't it fun to scumble!

Nice job on the goldfish! O0 I'm surprised no one's sid it yet, but you need a bit more dark texture, especially at the bottom of the second dorsal fin front the top. It will give add some depth soothe fin doesn't look like its right on top of the adjacent fin.

Thanks for your feedback Steve.  As soon as I pulled my picture out to look at what you suggested, I saw what you were saying.  I'll have a play at what you mentioned and see how it develops.

Mea - I love the word "Scumble" too, not good at saying it fast, but I love the word and the technique.  It blows me away how well simple doodles of stars and figure 8's can actually shade and bring a picture to life.

Well done Clivus, just be mindful of 'hard' outlines showing. ( back of the dorsal fin).

great job - scumbling is great fun isn't it :heeha:

Just remember to not be scared of adding the darkest tonal values where you see them as Steve has pointed out O0

You are doing well, keep it :yippee:

Here is my fix up of the picture.  How'd I go with the darker tones?

Oh, yes, Clivas.  He pops now!!!

One suggestion: On those middle fins, blend out the outlined look where they overlap.  In other words, just shade the the top outline down as the shadow would be cast onto the lower fin.  For the dark line on the bottom fin, gradually shade it into the bottom of the fin.

It's been awhile since I've been able to sit down and draw again.  Finally got to the Old Barn exercise.  Enjoyed getting to do some scumbling again with the trees behind the barn.  Here is the drawing:
