Looks good, Mea. My only concern is that the rooster's head looks a little flat to me. Maybe some additional tones will give it more shape?

Ooooeee! Look at all that gorgeous color and texture!

Just a few things things--very minor:  (1) Consider putting the background in first, so you don't have a halo/outlining situation occurring as here with the green around the legs and the white around the bottom of the tail. (2) Consider planning for a few more white areas in the rooster, for contrast. (3) Maybe add a touch of a shadow under his feet to ground him. (4) Consider adding a few more grass stalks in 2 other parts of the lower half.

Thanks, Fiona, Steve, KathyS, and Susan.

I have noted all your comments and will incorporate them in the big bird when I start it next week.

Appreciate your taking the time to send suggestions.

Thanks, Mary Lou.

I am about to begin the big one - 11  x 14.  Since I am doing it on hemp paper, I have decided not to do a background.  The paper has a lot of texture already on it, so I will just use a shadow under the bird, near his feet.  The bird will nearly fill the paper, so not a lot of room for a background anyway.

Hope I am not making a mistake.  I'll think a little more about it.  If any of you have a thought, please send it quickly.  I need to have this ready by Friday for the image (jpg) to be juried.

Ended up putting a light background - done with cling rap.  it's very subtle and won't detract from the bird.

Hope to have something for you to look at by morning.

Here it is, but still needs tweaking.

 I can see that the shadowed side of the legs are not dark enough.  What else?

It is 11 x 14 inches.  Watercolor on hemp paper.

I'm hoping that because it is so eye catching and done on hemp paper that the juror will choose it.

Very nice, Mea! :yippee::yippee:

I love the way you did the highlights on the tail. Also, what is that small dark patch at the bottom left?

Ooops, sorry Steve.  That's painters tape.  I forgot to crop it out.

Thanks, Kathy and Steve.  I just did a darker olive green wash over the grassy area.  Added more silvery streaks to the dark feathers.  Defined the beak better.

Will show it to my mentor on Wednesday, then repost on Thursday.
