Haven't done much sketching lately so killed time while listening to a football game yesterday.

Just a sketch, but light years better than anything I could have done three years ago.  I know, I preach "Don't be afraid of the darks," but just didn't follow my own advice here.

Still I am pleased that it looks a bit like the photo.

Funny, I've just pulled out a couple of drawings I never got around to finishing. Taking a bit to get back into it. Good on you for tackling a portrait to start back. I've got a couple to finish up. If you can jump back in..... I should too! Thanks for the boot!  ;D
Cheers, Val

Today I did a still life sketch of my husband's wood turnings.  I enjoy drawing wood grains.

I'm still troubled by shadows and shading, especially when there are multiple light sources.

Apart from the shadows on the shelf it is hard to see where the light source is Mea, looks as if it should be coming from the left but the center piece contradicts this. Nice detail on the grains though.

Yes, I agree with you both, TeresaM and Bill.  Shadings and shadows are off.  Had too many light sources in the room when I did it.
