My son wanted me to take a photo of him with an apple. When I saw the photo afterwards, I couldn't resist to paint his portrait with my new pastels on a A4 watercolour paper. (8.3x11.7 in)

And here is another portrait, which I lately posted in wrong forum section and was kindly told to post it here.

:thankyou: all, my mother liked her portrait, which she found under her christmas tree. I still have much to learn. And I need to find the right paper for my pastel painting. These papers I used are not what I am looking for.

Sarlota, I really love these portraits.  Very well done.  I know what you mean about the right pastel paper.  I have found after much experimenting that I prefer a beige tone for portraits.  I have finally settled on Pastel Premier paper, a new paper sold by Dakota pastels (don't know if they ship to you) and I use the Italian Clay color. It is a sanded paper.  A medium olive paper is also nice for skintones.

Thanks for your advice, Lynn. I am googling for various pastel papers. The one you mentioned seems to be sold only in US and Canada (international shipping is quite expensive). I found some Canson and Daler/Rowney papers on internet. I'll try these. Or maybe I consult my decision with few local artists here in my town.

Sarlota, your portraits are lovely, you have a real talent for them

With regard to the type of paper to use, I always use Canson Mi-Teintes as I like the tooth it gives me, and like Lynn I also prefer a lighter or mid tone paper. The two I use most often are Moonstone and China Grey. Hope this helps.

Thank you Fiona, you helped me to choose Canson paper. It is available in my country. I am curious, how my pastel painting will look like on a beige paper. :)
