Hi Folks

This year I will be painting an oil portrait of my wife Sonja.
To catch the likeness of a portrait subject it is paramount that the artist capture the model's personality through the eyes.
Often if the subject has interesting eyes I will paint a pastel study of the eyes before I start to paint the full portrait. This gets me familiar with the task ahead.
To give an example of this I have posted the study I did of Sonja's eyes in prep for the oil portrait..

The study took about an hour to draw

Bruce,

Those eyes are incredible.  You put lots of life into them.  I have no doubt but that you can make an incredible portrait of your wife.

You go, guy!
