In between painting, a question pops to mind......

 In re-reading perfect painting course, it outlines from generating the idea to display of the art. Now that I have done several studies/mini painting, I can appreciate it now than when I first arrived at PB.

My question....

Do you guys have small checklist once you've done a painting to make sure all the important components are there?

If so, what are the top three or four maybe five you consider?

Hi Vjah,
What about starting simple:

1. Rule of Thirds - focal point (center of interest) in one of the sweet spot
2. Mostly x, some y, and little of z (where x,y,z could refer to tonal value, contrast, color, etc.)
3. Watch the edges of the painting... nothing to draw the eyes outside the frame; watch how the picture is cropped.  Nolan explains this well in one of his lessons on composition, how the eyes should flow inside the painting along a loop (like a circle of a triangle).

Also:
Greg Albert wrote a simple book where he describes the various applications of only one rule 'Never make any two intervals the same'.  Interval is defined as all the different elements of composition.  It is presented very simply (likely oversimplify for the accomplished artist), but it is a nice starting point for beginner; then all rules can be broken right?  What is called, artistic licence?   But, I think it could be used to identify problems when 'something doesn't look right'.

The reference is:  The simple secret to better painting, Greg Albert.  ISBN-13: 978-1-58180-256-6.  Not a cheap book ($25US, $30Can), but I got in on loan at our public library.  It was very helpful for me to start looking at a way to balance a painting to make it nice, it also gave a lot of examples of bad composition.

I don't have a checklist as inspiration comes without warning, BUT the one thing I always think about is light/dark. I always look for the one lightest spot in the subject and the one darkest spot. That sets the tonal range.

once the painting is complete then you usually can only do minor changes like contrast and colour changes. That is why it so important to do your planning BEFORE you start the artwork

 Ok, based on the responses, I rechecked which exercises that I did was succesful based on comments and replies.

I have 3 that I think stood out: I think this will be a good start once I finished a painting to check. I think others fall in planning stage, I agree.

1. Color - Rose and Tulip 
2. Effect of Light   
3. Texture - Jellybeans on Wood

I see my mistake, I was talking about planning.  You were asking about correcting final details.  As a beginner, I guess it would be good to go back and check what basic elements of composition were overlook... for the next painting.
