Hi Nolan

I wonder if you have any tips to take good photo's of ones paintings.   Maybe a topic for live view.  I always seem to battle with this.  Not sure to take the photos in sunlight, outside or inside.  I do have a Canon SLR.

Taking photos of paintings is an art in it's own. I do need to work up something about it.

The main thing is that you need to reduce the amount of glare off the painting as much as possible, so take photos of your paintings outdoors is a definately no-no.

You want to take your photos indoors with an even ambient natural light over the entire painting.
Your camera needs to be as parallel to the painting as possible to ensure the least amount of distortion.

I think I will make this my next tutorial on the site, how about that?

There seems to be different opinions about this Val,I always try to take photographs of my work outside as do many artists I know, I use a Mat Acrylic varnish on my paintings so glare is not that much of a problem, If you like a shiny finish on your paintings then you can have trouble indoors with lighting or outdoors with sunlight, as Nolan said there is a lot to learn on how best to photograph your work and I look forward to his tutorial.

Always a problem.... my better shots have been with the picture lying flat on the table and the camera directly above. Not always the easiest when the  :boat: is a-rockin'  !

There's a saying amongst sailors..... Nothing goes to weather like a 747!!  :2funny: We're anchored not far from the airport. We get buzzed quite regularly.... could paint the belly of one taking off over our heads....

There pros and cons to both indoor and outdoor taking photos of paintings. I have done both. I don't want to jump the gun, so we'll wait for Nolan to come back to us.
