Well, what a feast for the eyes.  I received these old Grumbacher pastels today after winning a bid on ebay.  I had been reading that they can be found there by watching and that they are soft and similar to Unisons.  They are no longer made.  I bid on two different lots that had come from estate sales of artists.  One of the lots came with this wonderful old oak box.  In total there are about 170 of them, many unused.  I spent some time today cleaning them up and arranging by color.  They were such a deal, about .75 apiece as opposed to $5-6 a piece (in open stock) at my local art store.  They are very soft, beautiful colors and dryer than the few sennelier's that I picked up.  Clearly don't need all these colors but so much cheaper than news--beautiful colors.  The round ones are probably 50 years old and the few square ones maybe 35 years old.  Keep an eye out if you are an ebay shopper.  Honestly, I have purchased many art supplies there for very little.

Dear Lynn;

Great choice, fantastic find!!!

I just loss an Ebay bid today on a vintage Grumbachers set of 40 soft pastel.   I was the highest bidder for
4 days but, alas I was outbid in the last 30 seconds.  I couldn't go any higher because the shipping charges to
Canada were 26.00 Us or Approx. 28.00 Cnd. + duty.  I may try again over the holidays, in the mean time I 'll use
the Rembrandt set I was able to purchase locally.  :tickedoff:

OOOO, just read on Craig's list that  a local art store is closing, owner retiring after 65 years...  40-50% off everything...   *zooms out of the house like a road runner* Beep-beep! :yippee:

Whew!  Good thing the liquidation had been going for a couple weeks and the existing stock was pretty thin. I think I need a shopping intervention group hug

I ended up at about $200 US...

11 sennelier soft partel singles @ $3/ea
a set of 12 alphacolor soft pastels in a grey tone scale white to black $4
20 single Unison soft pastels @$1.99/ea (some were a bit crumbled so got a better discount) best get  :yippee:
36 set of Prismacolor firm pastel sticks (for backgrounds mostly to save the pricier pastels)
7 single prismacolor sticks @ 1/ea (again mainly for backgrounds)
3 tubes of Graham oil paints
1 lb can of rabbit skin glue (didn't like the synthetic linen canvas primer)
a few 2 oz samplers of Gamblin Gamsol and Galkyd free!
1 tube of the Gamblin Torrit grey free (to add to a few more of the free tubes I have will need to work them into some dead layers)
2 1/2 oz Grumbacher Damar Varnish
1 18x24in Stratmore Drawing pad of 24 sheets

Someone needs to take my debit card away from me for the rest of the season...   :knuppel2:

I like Lynn's deal better, I might have to start watching the bids there for some nice deals, does everyone still pretty much use pay pal for the transactions on EBay?  I never quite trusted people to represent their items on an open forum like that.  But I suppose after a few years now and still around it's safe enough to try.

Hmmmmm, I need a roll of nice double weave unprimed linen now...  I forgot to post the 10 stretcher bars I bought with the other stuff I listed.. I'm also planning to go back just before they shut the doors for more stretcher bars, they still had a ton of them in stock and if they drop to 60-70% off I'm all over them!   :yippee:

*mutters something about kitchen sinks*

Just send money Alice ^^

Steven, you're giving me butterflies in my stomach! How exciting. Re Ebay--I have not had a problem with shopping there and, yes, I use PayPal.
