  • SMILE, It's a brand new day!
on: March 18, 2011, 09:08:06 AM
I have started a new portrait and am already in need of assistance. How does one go about sketching dark complections? I've had it mentioned to me about rubbing graphite on the paper and lifting out the light areas. Not sure I understand that exactly, wouldn't know where to find powdered graphite anyway. Would I start by putting a light shading over the whole face and just darken it for features and contour? Just thought I'd see if I could pick some brains before I lose the net completely tomorrow. Any suggestions would be good.
Cheers, Val

Val I would start find the lightest tonal value after the highlight and lay that down as a base, then shade in the darkest area. That will establish your tonal range. You can then judge the rest of the tones from there. The main difference between a light and a dark complexion is the total tonal range available to work with.

Am starting yet another Carriacou face.. this time a young girl with the most incredible face I've ever seen. This one actually frightens me a bit in that she is very dark plus I'm not sure I can really capture this one. I tried posting the photograph but for some reason it won't upload. I guess the net is a bit too slow for proper photos. Will keep trying. Since I started drawing these faces I can't seem to stop...(attempting anyway). What a wonderful addiction, the frustration at times is almost enough to bring tears but the little successes bring so much joy one just wants to dance and clap and laugh outloud.  :yippee:   :parachute:

can't wait to see her.

Drawing faces is the best shading practice you can get, so you will see your paintings improve as your faces get better too

Have the eyes almost complete, shaded in part of the nose and mouth just to see if I'm close to capturing her. I think this will be my Little Mona Lisa of Carriacou....maybe the Caribbean! Having trouble even opening the forum topics so will try again later.
Thanks for hanging in there with me guys.

I decided to try darkening the shading on the face today....wish I hadn't. The look which so attracted me to her was lost somehow. I've tried lightening it again but still haven't found where I went wrong. Will try again tomorrow. Still haven't been able to upload any photos, will try again tomorrow. (heavy sigh).

Hi Nolan... I managed to upload the pictures under topic 'Carriacou Girl'. Amazing what one can accomplish when you the straight jacket is off and the demented personality takes over!  :P
I packed up everything and brought it ashore, found an internet cafe where the internet actually works!! Unfortunately I forgot to load the newest picture from yesterday   :'( ...back in the straight jacket!   :2funny:
