Have any of you used coloured pencils much? I don't see any discussion on the subject and wondered if it's a thing of the past or what?

I would like to add coloured pencils to my list of drawing tools but have no idea of where to start or what to do. I have a whole box full of pencils so that isn't an issue. . . . . .
I live to draw and paint, it a good thing that I don't have to draw and paint to live!

I use :) Lately I used graphite pencils more, but right now I'm waiting for a new big set of coloured pencils.
Since about 14 years I use watercolour pencils and I have some issues with unequal layers of pigment, but I don't know yet whether it's my fault or my pencils got too humid (I have this set since almost 7 years).
I think this subject will be very useful also for me :)

Hi Lola. . . . I tried watercolour pencils and I too found them to be odd. . . . to say the least!
Dennis has a course on watercolour pencils and I'm tempted to take it as it looks really interesting. I think he suggests. . . . and I'm just getting this from the advertizing for the course. . . .that the pencils be used with a watercolour painting, to enhance.

Right now, though, I'm finishing up the "Let's Draw" course and everything I've done has been in graphite. Except for the piece I'm now working on. . . . . .to which I  have added charcoal! :heeha:
The Let's Draw course was just fantastic and I learned so much - wonderful is just one of the words to describe this experience. However, I would like to experiment with coloured pencils but don't see anything here.  :(  Well. . . .  I could just do it!!! Right?  :2funny:

Hey Roxy, I also have colored pencils. But I do not use them. Because I don't know how.  :2funny: :2funny:  I have seen some you tube video's on them. But right now I have enough to do just to learn watercolor. Now watercolor pencils I do use along with my watercolor paints. I prefer getting good with one medium then go to the next one.

You are probably right Nina and very wise. . . . .get good in one medium before trying to tackle another one! However. . . . I feel this urge to add some hints of colour to all this black & white I'm doing in the drawing class!
Originally, I took the drawing class so that I would be a better watercolourist. . . . someone said, that if you can draw, then you can paint better. It has turned out to be so much fun, I hate to leave it and move on to what was my intended path. Sooooo, I guess to prolong the experience, I'm dabbling in coloured pencils. . . . . . :2funny:
Silly Roxy. . . .  :2funny: :crazy2:

I am no Artist, I just love drawing, so my opinion may not be correct ;) But I think that every new thing helps also to improve others. Since I started using charcoal I feel more free when I use pencils :)

By the way, about mixing b&w with colours: sometimes it is very hard, because of the wax and other ingredients, so it takes some time to get to know your supplies, but then all should go smoothly :)

Your opinion is absolutely correct. . . . and of course you are an artist!
And you are right about the different ingredients in the pencils. . . . I just found out about the wax & stuff!! Smart girl, our Lola!! O0

If you love drawing, have you checked out the Let's Draw " course here on Paint Basket? It's very reasonably priced and there are several ways you can get started. Scroll up to the Art Store and check it out. We have had loads of fun learning how to draw!

I would for sure try it, but I have only few more days of holiday, so I won't have time for it and also as I ordered a big set of pencils (I found an occasion by accident, 50% cheaper, but it still costs a lot for me), I have to save some money for that first. For now I spent all money I had for art supplies :)

I don't feel good enough, I mean skilled enough, to call myself an artist, but for sure I'd say I have an artistic soul :D I could stare at something beautiful for hours :D or I listen to the same song for several hours and I still feel amazed :)

About wax etc. - that's the main reason why I started using watercolour pencils :) It's easier to mix colours :)

I have used watercolour pencils quite a lot and I think they are fantastic, however they can be tricky and there are not many people around who can teach you 'how'. Now, if I knew how to add a photo here I would but I don't know how, so the next best is check up on my gallery under automotive and aviation and you will see some of my watercolour pencil work.

Hi Dupart. . . . is it okay to call you Andre?  I can even say it in French. . .  seeing as I'm Canadian  :2funny: :2funny:
I just looked at your coloured pencil drawings and again :faint: you take my breath away!!!
Are you an architect in real live by any chance? Your buildings and your perspective are so spot on, I suspect some sort of engineering or architiectural background!LOL! I have an engineer husband!  :2funny:

Okay, to get your pictures into the thread of your choice; go to your album and below your pictures you will see a line that says  [smg id=####] there will be 4 or more /less numbers after the = sign. Copy that code, exactly, into your post and your picture will appear. Remember the [square] brackets and a space between smg and id but no space between id and =
Hope this helps. . . oh and if you want to post a bunch of them in one post. . . .easier all around. . .  just copy down the BBC code on a note pad, then just copy those into your post. :gl2:

Thanks all. Yes please call me Andre, but I cannot speak a word of French, sorry. Roxy you were close, before I retired I was a Senior Mechanical Designer for many many years, and that does help I guess.

Okay, so now I know how to post my photos onto the forum. This is an artwork I did using watercolour pencils on Fabriano board.
