Thanks Bonnie and Jenny.   :)

I'm almost done with the rocks. I tried freehanding them, I think during my break I picked up a different picture of the rocks so its a bit of a mishmash...made the shading more challenging, not at all sure I've got it right but that's what I'm here for...to learn to get it right.   O0

Rocks come in all shapes, Val.  You know about tonal range, you'll do fine.

I'm looking forward to your creation.   :gl2:

:-X   Can't say that...it would be naughty!   :stress:  I did it...that thing we aught not to do...I fiddled.   >:(   Should have left well enough alone. I don't really mind though, I think I've got the planes not too bad, the shading especially on the left hand third of the drawing is a right muck up! But then, I've always been known to not resist a jump in a puddle!  ;D
Here's another wart for inspection   :eyesclosed:  ....glad its on paper and not me!   >:D

I can't do such a terrific job.  So, what about it don't you like Val?

:congrats: Your rocks are great Val.  I bet Nolan wants some darker contrasts though. He really likes dark contrasts.  You do have the planes great, yout tonal values are good. Again tell me why you are taking the course.

I could be wrong, Nolan, please correct me if I am, but here comes my opinion (for what it's worth) --

I think you have great darks going on, but you lack more mid tones on the already somewhat dark planes.  I think what's bothering you is that it looks a bit anemic.   :)

Hmmmm, that's just my thinking.

I can't imagine why you don't like this drawing, Val.  You definitely have the planes laid out very, very well.

I think you did very well and you're being way to hard on yourself.

I'm looking forward to Nolan's opinion.

Thank you one and all.
Here's my take on it, I think I lost sight of the light direction and got in a bit of a tangle trying to sort it out. Hence I lost some of the contrasts I originally had, and the values just got a bit out of hand. Will definately mark an arrow for light direction in the corner from now on.

I wouldn't worry too much about the one or two small things bothering you Val, the drawing is beautiful, with lots of contrasts and more importantly you have got the planes correct. You shadings have improved a lot too

You are doing great  O0

  Thanks Nolan, I can see  when a lot of subtle shadings are required you really do have to watch the light source. Very easy to lose sight of it. I get so involved with shading I forget about the light source

Nice job!

I'm stuck on my rocks-I can't get motivated to finish them.

Thank you for your encouragement, it really does help keep me motivated. I'm feeling quite at odds with starting the crosshatched mug. I have a 2 day reprieve as I'm going with one of our neighbours on a 5 hr. bus ride to Guatemala City to pick up her son at the airport. Leave early tomorrow morning and return Friday afternoon.
   whew!
Ncwren, I was in much the same state with my rocks, especially when I couldn't figure out where I'd gone wrong. I eventually told myself off and insisted I couldn't go on until I finished it properly. It took me a full week plus to get it done, but what a great feeling. I know we'll be seeing yours shortly, and if a good self talking to doesn't work for you......    :knuppel2:  you can count on me!   :2funny:  Take your time, I know you know this, you can do it.   O0

I finally finished this at 5 o'clock this morning.     I decided to try and freehand this one...should have picked an easier mug!   :D  Looking at it now, I see the perspective went to H-in a handbasket...mucked up the tea (sorry I drank it while I was drawing   >:D  ), and forgot the slight shadow around the base. Oh well, I'll pay better attention on the next one. I think a straight sided mug would be best.   ;D

I do tend to jump in over my head don't I Lillian?   ::)  Despite the end result, I don't think the hatching is too bad. I don't think I'm quite ready to attempt any more metal objects. Is that in the course?
Thank you for your kind response.  :)
