A friend loaned me an 84-piece set of Caran D'Arche Water-soluable wax pastels to test.

I did this 5" x 7 " painting of Laie Point (about a mile from my house) in less than an hour using them.  The colors are intense and they are not messy to use.

Best part was having 84 colors so I did not have to mix anything.  I used Strathmore Mixed Media paper (90 lb) . It did not buckle when I put a wet brush over the colors.

I am pleased with them, but not sure I would use them enough to pay the price (between $250-$350 depending on where you buy them - 84 piece set).

Your thoughts?

I am quite intrigued by them. I think they would be quick and easy to use en plein air. I think if you want to experiment further I'd buy just a few colours and see how it goes.

I think you have some nice water effects there.
Cheers, Val

    Excellent Mea and I should imagine for that price that the pastels should be great. I like the sound of vibrancy so would like to know more if you experiment with them .... not that I could afford those prices but it would be interesting to learn about them.

Thanks, Patricia.

After seeing what I did with the wax pastels, my friend is thinking she might want to give them a try.  Oh, dear, I may have to return them.

Wow Mea, I've never heard of these.  Seem like the pastel version of watercolor pencils.  Nice vibrancy.

Yes, Lynn, they do seem like watercolor pencils except they look like little kids crayons.

Interesting Medium, Mea! Did you try using this again?

Gita,

I've been trying to decide what to do today while I watch my Patriots play in the football championship playoff game leading up to the Super Bowl.  So, I will use the Caran D'Arche wax pastels to paint my favorite subject - Chinaman's Hat.

I've painted and drawn it in so many different media so many times that I  should be able to watch football and paint it easily.

Will post it after the game.   Thanks for inspiring me.
