I made an attempt on the challenge puppy, but am not happy with how it turned out.  I tried to bring out some detail that is in shadow.  Any tips / encouragement are appreciated.

This challenge photo is a bit deceptive, study the photo for the light reflections on the head, ear, and face. It is the values of the reflected light that gives the shape and detail of the head and face. You're doing great, keep going!  :cheering: :cheering: :cheering:
Cheers, Val

Mysti, I was wondering what happened to your challenge dog for I saw it in the Gallery and then it was gone. I think you are doing very nicely and I would agree with Val in studying the light reflections which shape everything on the dog's head. I also feel that the dog's eyes are off somewhat. I hate giving critiques for I am still learning myself but if my comments can help you in any way, then I would be ecstatic.

Thank you Val and Patricia!  That helps a lot.  I will have some time tomorrow I can work on him (her?) to make it better.  I will have better lighting too as this was done under the van light, so that may help to get better lighting.  I will see what I can do with the eyes too.  They do not show in the picture, so I was trying to bring them out for the drawing.

Mysti, you will no doubt improve so much in good light.  I struggle with this myself as I can only do my art in the night and as I am ageing my eyesight is getting poor.  I understand what you are saying about wanting to bring the eyes out in your drawing, we all want to use our artistic licence but once again, look at the original and study the light reflections, also bear in mind Rule 2 which says to do the picture as close as possible to the original. I hope this helps Mysti and I look forward to seeing your submission. I still have a few tweaks to do on mine too.

Mysti, I was sad to see that you never submitted your challenge puppy for you were doing so well with it. What happened? You have such potential. Don't get disheartened when things don't turn out as you had hoped, for practice makes perfect as Dennis always tells us. I feel so disappointed as I was looking forward to seeing a winner in your drawing.

Hi, Patricia.  I was hoping to have time to do more work on the puppy, but wound up having to do something else that day.  I didn’t get time again for paper drawing until today, which was of course too late.  I will do more work on the puppy possibly tomorrow.  I decided to finish my barn instead, which is way overdue.  I really don’t know what I am doing yet with the colored pencils.  They are a different animal from graphite.

I just went and saw your beautiful puppy, Patricia!  I hope one day I can draw half as well as you do.   :painting:

:thankyou:  Mysti for your message and the wonderful compliment about my drawing. I honestly felt that with a few tweaks on yours, it would have been far better than mine. As I have said before, you have such potential and I would hate you to let it go. I understand what you are saying about lack of time for life is busy, even for me, as family come first. However, I hope with the New Year it will calm down a bit and that I will be able to manage my time better. Yes, please finish your puppy and let us have a look at it. Don't ever forget that practice makes perfect.

I had some time this morning and worked on the puppy.  I need to learn more about colored pencil use so I can handle color blending better.  I did some work on the eyes and I added some depth to the face.  I also got the back leg to show a little better.

Here is the original  wip for reference.  Funny how the paper looks so different in a different light.

Oh, yes, Mysti, it is better know.  Face is much nicer - eyes look softer.

Thank you, mea!   :thankyou:   It should be a little easier now to tell it is not a raccoon.   :2funny:

      Absolutely fantastic Mysti.  I am just so heartsore that you were not in time to submit your drawing for I think you have a winner there. As I am the only participant in the drawing challenge, I have decided that the award I receive, I will hand over to you because you did a wonderful job and would probably have won the competition if you had submitted your drawing so I will drop Val a line to request this Mysti. Enjoy.

Thank you, Patricia!  Yours is much better than mine, though.  You also did the whole drawing and I only did one part.  You definitely deserve any award you receive.
