Hello,

I have just started taking lessons a couple of days ago.

I did the stroke and shading exercises.  After a couple of trials I was able to draw lines and flicks pretty confidently. The ball shading exercise did not turn out quite well though.

And my first tree  :)

Many thanks,
Su

Su you are off to a great start!

The ball is a bit tricky at first. Take your time with it, try using lighter strokes and gradually building your way through the gradations. Another hint to help create the roundness is to follow the curve of your outline and try to avoid the straight lines.

Keep at it, you may find it to be the most important exercise of all.  O0

Su,

Happy to see that you have joined us from the United Kingdom.

You are off to a good start with the pencil course.  I carry a sketch pad and a few pencils with me everywhere I go, do that I can practice daily.  That's the key to improvement - constant practice.  Even doodling counts.

And remember the importance of shading - dark against light to make your work POP.

Hi, Su.  Welcome to Paintbasket! :welcome:   You are doing great. 👍   I am slowly going through the same course.  Mea and Val have both given you some great advice.  Looking forward to seeing your drawings!

Thank you all for the encouragement.  The ball shading was done after watching the first introductory (free) video.

I noticed that 'shading techniques for the ball' is a separate lesson on Day 4 in the course.  I shall try again after going through the lesson  :)
