I wanted to paint and whenever I don't know what to paint, I choose flowers.  I love violets, so I tried this...

Any suggestions, thank you...

I think you have a knack for flowers njngirl  ;)

First off your Violets are lovely!

The only things that look a little "flat" to me are the leaves in some areas. Whenever I have something that looks a little "flat" coloured in a dark area i will do a little rubbing and dabbing out to create a highlight and visa versa in a "flat" light area - perhaps a shadow/s drifting over a part of the leaf or an introduction of some different shades of the objects colour in this case some greens and yellows maybe. Basically just create some different tones to allow for some more interest and depth.

I hope I dont sound arrogant or anything as Im also just learning and really mean my advice with the best of intentions. And your watercolours are really good and I respect your work a lot! and I especially suck at flowers!

But i honestly think based on your sunflower and this one, that you have a natural ability towards flowers!

Really pretty!

    Very nice Violets Mary Lou. I have noticed that lately you seem to have adopted the "loose" watercolour style with your flowers, is this new or have you always painted flowers that way?  Interesting nevertheless.

:heeha: These are fabulous Mary Lou! Geez I'm having a devil of a time getting back into my w/c.... say,  how would you like a vacation in Guatemala to 'coach' me along?  ;)   No, really!      ;D

Trev,

I am sure that Mary Lou appreciates your tips as much as I do.   I think that is the greatest asset of PaintBasket in that we all genuinely want each other to thrive in our art.  Sharing what we have learned shows how much we care about your fellow PB-er.

God bless sweet young men like you who willingly spend time helping us old ladies (well, in calendar years anyway - not in spirit) !

Beautifully done, Mary Lou! I like the loose style very much.  :smitten: :smitten:

Maybe a bit more definition of the individual violets in the lower left?

Thank you Patricia.  I love loose watercolor and keep trying it as it intrigues me.  It is something that I can just jump into when I feel like painting but not spend time in planning a painting.  This is more or less practice...or really just me having fun.. .as I still have not been able to really get that "look" I am trying to achieve. :-\

Val, that would be something, me coaching you?!?  :o You have given me more inspiration than you will ever know. :)   Just do something fun, play, then maybe you will be inspired again.

Mea, I totally agree... O0
Thanks Sue, I will tweak this painting as soon as I can get to it.  Appreciate the help! :thankyou:

Mary Lou, after my last post to you about your loose painting style, I went and had a look at your portfolio and noticed through the months/years you have switched from realism, if I can call it that, to loose paintings and back, with such ease.  I think you are very versatile and it was such a lovely interlude, viewing all your paintings which are too lovely for words and which I found most interesting. You can be very proud of yourself and your achievements.

If you like loose florals and other subjects Andrew Geeson is really good with them. He often has sped up versions on youtube. He is so loose he fears nothing! Fun to watch :)

You are a sweetheart Mary Lou. I've got my final sketch of the succulent ready to go. If this one doesn't work out i'm going to try pastel over the top. Now that sounds like fun to me!  :2funny:

Thanks so much Patricia.  :flowers: Yes I tried loose fairly often, some good, some bad, but I so appreciate your kind words.  I just try and do things that interest me and have fun with.

Thank you Trev, I have watched him and he is awesome.  If only...... :)

Val, I have seen your watercolors and you are too hard on yourself.  But do what is fun and grabs you and never will go wrong.    ;)

Here is the revision:

Not so sure I have managed to "un"-flatten my leaves, Trev, but I did tweak them some...Also added more definition to the lower flowers as Sue suggested.
