Mea, I thought I had two. Turns out I only have one: Interference Blue. Does that qualify as iridescent? I've completed all my paintings for my 2018 calendar, so my next watercolor is going to be my Christmas card. Have the design all picked out, and I think this Interference Blue will work on it. I'll begin that painting after I've played around a little more with my fingerpainting in oils.

Susan,

Here's what I found.  Sorry, I could not find a less bookish explanation - basicallly they are interference and iridescent are somewhat alike and somewhat different.

Interference colour is the colour exhibited by a section of an anisotropic mineral under cross polarised light. The interference colour is produced by interference between the two rays produced as light passes through an anisotropic mineral, the fast ray and the slow ray. They are also known as "Opalescent Colors"

Iridescence (also known as goniochromism) is the phenomenon of certain surfaces that appear to gradually change colour as the angle of view or the angle of illumination changes. Examples of iridescence include soap bubbles, butterfly wings and sea shells, as well as certain minerals. (Iridescent came to be in 1796, when some enthusiastic word maker took the Latin word iris, which means "rainbow," and morphed it into an English word that describes anything giving off a luminous, rainbow sheen or that changes color in the light.)

I am using DaVinci Iridescent Colors - a six-tube iridescent collection with Phthalo Blue, Hansa Yellow Light, Phthalo Green, Napthol Red, Burnt Sienne, and Raw Sienna.

What brand is your Interference" tube?  Seems to me that it would work well for a winter night sky scene.  Maybe even a light glaze over snow.

Zayn,

Thanks.  Am really enjoying using the iridescents in this case.

Thanks for the good explanation, Mea. My Interference Blue is by Daniel Smith.

I used iridescent glass a few years ago when I was making fused glass jewelry. It's called dichroic glass, and is very beautiful.

Thank you, Patricia, Win, and Kathy.

Just have to tweak it to look more like the schooling bannerfish so that I can feel I have done justice to it.
