Just completed this painting and would love your thoughts.  Not sure how I feel about it....thanks for your input.

By the way it is brighter in person, my photo is not good.

Mary Lou

This is so lovely.  It captures a tender moment.  I am "cast-shadow challenged "so am not sure that you have them correct.

Regardless, it is a precious piece.

Lovely painting MaryLou. The only things I find a bit bothersome is from the kneecaps down to the ankle. I think the kneecaps are a bit too big. The line separating the two legs seems a bit too curved. The back of the calf needs to be tapered in a bit as it comes down to the ankle. Perhaps a hint of the ankle joint and then I'd call it a day.

I think you've done a great job on this, I remember days at the beach when my son was small.  :flowers:
Cheers, Val

Thank you Mea and Val.   I will look at the legs again Val, thank you..  Also, Mea the dark area behind the truck is wet sand in a pile, that might not be what you "see" ,   this is what always worries me, that the viewer doesn't "see" what I have tried to paint. I wonder if that is what you thought was a cast shadow?

Here it is revised:

Do you think this is good enough for a local show?  The theme is summer.

:yippee:   So much better Mary Lou!!! Well done.  O0

Even though it is just a pile of sand, don't forget that there will be bright highlights where the sun catches parts of the pile, and some darker shadows. Check closely where your light source is coming from and get just a few of the darks and lights in and your sand pile will take on a real 3D look and there will be no mistaking it for a shadow. You could also stick a small spade or sand rake into the pile, just a thought....

Then in my opinion.... go for the show!!!  :cheering: :cheering: :cheering:

   Beautiful MaryLou and I agree with what Val has suggested about the wet sand.  With minor tweaks it will be perfect.

   What a cute composition, Mary Lou! Is he playing in the sand at the beach or in a sand box? If at the beach, some ocean in the background would be fun. My only other suggestion besides Val's is to perhaps add a little pinkish tone to the boy's skin...it looks a bit on the yellow side...

And absolutely enter it in the show!

 Your little boy in the sand is precious, Marylou. Yes,  I think you should enter him in the show. He is totally good enough to be shared with other artists in the community. Do it!!!   O0

Thanks Val, I will work on the sand pile.  The light seems to me to be coming directly above the child from his right.

Thank you Patricia, you are always so encouraging.  Sharon, it is at the beach and there is water at the top of the painting.  It is the water's edge, so there is a little color and foam...Maybe I will add some more blue to bump it up a bit.

Thanks Kathy I appreciate your encouragement, too!

I had some time and did the tweaks as suggested.  I am pretty happy with this now and will enter it in the show.  Thank you!

Oh! MaryLou, it is brilliant with the red spade stuck in the sand pile.  What a difference a small alteration can make.  Just too lovely for words.  :smitten: :smitten:

Mary Lou,

So happy you took the time to tweak this.  Definitely enter it in the show.

That red shovel is really a great addition.

Oh, so lovely.

Thank you Sue, Val, Win, Patricia and Mea.  I appreciate everyone's suggestions.  The sand pile had turned out to be a challenge and I am so happy that I was able to make it look like a sand pile! I will definitely enter it in the show. Thanks again!! :thankyou:
