Liz,

You have lots of good features in this.

His left eye looks great, but the right eye looks unfinished. 

Teeth are well drawn but maybe some dark spots between upper and lower teeth, especially in the middle as it looks like his tongue might be resting in that space. 

Good overall shape for the ears.

Beautiful detailing on the print of the shirt.

Beard  might look better on the outside of the shirt color because at first glance, it looks like the beard ends with the line that is actually the collar.

Nose looks good, but is the shadow under his left nostril shaped correctly?

I really like this - you are really good at drawing old people. (I feel okay saying that as I really am an old person.)

Hi mea,
Thank you, i have check photo and he has some strange shading under his nose and  i have it as in photo also his beard looks appears to be inside his shirts so the line of the shirt does look abit strange. To be honest he looks like he needs a good bath! I think some dark areas are really dirt! His teeth are dirty. I take your point about tbe left eye but again that is how it looks in photo may be i shouldn't be quite so literal when drawing from a photo. Also i wonder  if he is one of the unfortunates who are not  symmetrical in their features. Certainly his left eye is total different from his right!

I think i should look for a photo of a gentleman who takes pride in his self  with a long white beard to practice on.

Interesting piece this Liz. I think the only thing really off with the beard is that the hairs are too thick. If you can thin the lines I think you will see quite a difference.

Hi val, yes its the very first attempt at an unruly beard or should i say a knotting beard.. i think that it was the wrong photo to pick to attempt this will look for a better subject. But worth doing again in the future..

Using dry tinted charcoal

Its my birthday soon so i treated myself to a tin of 24 derwent tinted charcoal, it was in the sale!

So thought i would draw with them for a change.

Have never seen tinted charcoal. Looks like it would be fun.

Hi,

They've been out for a while now derwent do  tinted graphite too, they are both  watersoluble , i think both these are sold in 6, 12 and 24 sets. Only problem , they are thick pencils 4mm core , so don't fit into a standard pencil sharpeners.

Liz, thanks for the info.  I have several types of pencils that do not fit in my electric pencil sharpener.  Bummers.

I haven't tried them with water yet, they say the colours are more intense. I think certainly with tinted charcoal  and probably the graphitint you really need to make a swatch chart as the names and colours on the pencil are nothing like the actual colour.

I agree about the 'bummers' i don't know about you but i am absolutely useless at sharpening with a knife !

 There are so many different mediums out there now days.  I guess one could get caught up in trying them all and never quite mastering one.

Yes i agree there is far too much out there with quite alot of overlap. I like my pencil so charcoal fits  there . I have just started soft pastel and i would like to do wc but although last Christmas i was given an art chest which has oils in it  i don't think i will ever use them, i might dabble with the arcylic though.

I think if you had everything out there you'd probably need a multi storey home especially to stire thrm.
