  • SMILE, It's a brand new day!
on: May 20, 2017, 12:49:18 PM
Having some issues uploading but managed to get these two so far.

The first sketch I spent about an hour with this delightful Blue Macaw in Antigua (Guatemala). He seemed quite happy to have my attention.

I am quite happy with how his beak turned out, the eye was better before the "if I just refine this a little...." One day I will learn...  ::)

Cheers, Val

This second 'sketch'  :2funny:   I barely had 5 minutes before I got pulled away to go in search of a restaurant. I'll take another crack at this one from one of the many photos I took of the arch. I doubt it would have come out well anyway, very poor angle for sketching. None the less, one of my many warts for your pleasure!  ;)    ;D

Wow, Val, a bite from that beak would be quite painful.  Don't get too close.

Ta much Kathy and Mea. The upcoming sketches as well as these two were drawn with only a 2B pencil. My bag with all my sketch gear got left behind.  After searching through the town of Antigua I managed to find the equivalent of a small office depot. The best I could get was a box of 2B pencils, a cheap notebook, and a small eraser and sharpener.
Surprising how many values you can get out of a single pencil when you have to.

:heeha: You did that Macaw with a basic #2? I'm really impressed, Val. You got a lot of value out of one pencil.

I never fail to be surprised at the possibilities. Nothing more than layering and paying careful attention to pressure.

I was surprised to find anything there (expecting the usual HB), just had a look and they are made by Faber Castell! They look just like your old HB yellow school pencil with rubber top and all! They really hold a point which also surprised me. I really lucked out with these.

Will see if i can upload a couple more sketches today. My modem stick ran out so using the free wifi here. Not very strong and highly unreliable as usual.  ;)    ;D

 :thankyou:

Val, I am also so impressed with your Macaw's beak for it has a 3D look to it.  Fantastic job.

Ta ever so Patricia. Now if only I could get the rest of the bird as well done as the beak! Then I'd be getting somewhere!  :heeha:     :2funny:

The wifi here is running too slow to upload the next pair, so off to town tomorrow to get some time on the modem.  :run:

Val, don't know how I missed these.  So happy to see you drawing from life and agree with the others that the Macaw is awesome--actually looks like charcoal.

I am working on trying to sketch quicker, I always find myself getting caught up on some part and finishing it off.  :crazy2:   Just have to loosen up!  ;D

Before I started the drawing lessons, I was a bit before them, I had started doing portraits on my own. I loved the way they developed. As my sight has deteriorated somewhat I found I couldn't see the tones and values well enough, plus it would take me months/years sometimes to get close to finishing one. So, we move on.

I feel the pastel sticks may be giving me a new lease of sorts with their intensity and vibrancy. Will just have to see where they lead...
