Hi everyone! I gratefully take all and any tips on how to improve the painting, I am painting of a photo (black/white) I feel that the contrast on the ship isn't what I want. The clouds near the ship in the photo seems rather light to me. perhaps darkening the clouds and have more room for adjustments on the ship?

Thanks in advance

Don't darken the clouds too much around the ship as it is already a dark colour and would merge with the clouds if you do.

Gits666--I think you are quite close and nicely drawn.  What I see is that some of your values are off.  Step back from your  photo, squint, and this will blur your vision and make it easier to see value.  Notice that the front hull of the ship is the same darkness as the front middle, etc.  I also see some darks i the sea in the curls of the waves etc.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input, you both have very good points. I am now wondering if I should add more blue sky to the painting ant thus create more contrast? It becomes very much shades of grey and that's ok but not what I , I guess another photo had been better to work from.

Stig,

You've taken on quite a challenge.  Dennis and Lynn have given good advice.

Personally, I would avoid introducing the blue sky - once you get all the correct tones, it will look good.

Look forward to seeing this completed.

Thank you! After looking at a lot of photos I came to realize the image was lying a bit. The ship is actually darker than it seems, also I had a problem with the front cannon that in the image seems to be white at the front. This is not correct only the leather covering (don't know what it's called) is white, the guns are actually dark grey. Therefore I can have the clouds quite bright without loosing contrast and the blue sky will be dark grey/blue :)
