I’m still trying to get my head around the website but It’s time I introduced myself.
I emigrated to Sydney Aust 1969 built a good life with a loving wife and 4 children. Now with 5 grandkids.
Lots of things to do in my retirement, never a dull moment, but in January this year I did an introductory course in Watercolour.  Encouraged by the tutor I took lessons and now can’t keep a brush out of my hand.
This site is a blessing with the friendly and good advise given.
A few questions…
How do the titles given to members work? , pencil easel canvas etc …
The  home page shows New Member Artworks how do you scroll to earlier submissions?
When a picture is selected it goes to the Author, how do you view the comments?
I made an album My Photo’s, it appeared as a subject  in “New Members Read here first” ????

Thanks in anticipation.   Bill.

Bill,

Thanks for sharing info about yourself.  Sounds like you have a wonderful family.

Yes, Paintbasket is an excellent place to learn and feel supported by like-minded people.

Don't feel bad - most of us had the same questions when we started.

I can answer one of your questions quickly as I wrote about it in one of the newsletters - the categories we have on the Forum represent how many messages you send or reply to.  Just click on your name and your Profile will come up.  There you can see statistics about your usage and copies of every message you have ever sent.

CATEGORY        NUMBER OF MESSAGES
Pencil           1 to 49 messages

Color Wheel   50 to 99

Paint                  100 to 249

Palette          250 to 499

Paint Brush       500 to 999

Easel                  1000 to 1999

Canvas          2000 to 2999

Artist           3000 to 3999

Experienced Artist   4000 to 4999

Master Artist   5000 +    (Some of us have a lot to say.)

I remember feeling quite forlorn when I started and was only a pencil.  Then someone told me the PENCIL is the most important tool an artist owns, so then I felt better.

Actually, I think one of the least used features is the COMMENTS section in the Gallery.  We tend to make our comments in the appropriate Forum topic.  There is a pretty wide selection of general topics, then we can create our own when needed, mostly in the Encourager section of each medium.

If you click the word MEDIA across the top of the FORUM page, the five most recent pictures show up as you have already discovered.  But, if you go down to the next row, you will see ransom photos of the many thousands that are in the galleries.  Oh, funny, as I just went to look to be sure I was saying it correctly, I saw an oil painting of a cowrie shell I painted in 2014.  Now how random was that!

To see a particular person's work, you can click on each person's name and you will see
Media
Summary
View items

If you click on Summary, you get to see their work by whatever categories they have then in.
If you click, VIEW ITEMS, you see their work in reverse chronological order.

Everybody categorizes their work in whatever manner works for them  If you take a peek at my work, I have at least 20 different categories, mostly by the type of painting it is.

Hope that helps to get you going.

Oh, I love to see what everyone does, so I have the page that shows the last 100 Forum postings (no matter what topic it is) set as my home page in the OPERA browser which I use exclusively for art.
It is http://www.paintbasket.com/members/index.php?action=recent

It doesn't mean you will have to read 100 postings every time you tune in, I just read (and comment) until I come  to the last one I posted.

Thanks, Bill.  I enjoy writing.  (Secretly, I am a better writer than an artist.)

I really hope you enjoy Paint Basket as much as I do.  Nolan and Dennis have created just a welcoming environment for artists.  Quality lessons at an incredibly reasonable price and a Forum that is the best around.

Keep at it - you are doing well.

The forum does take a little getting used to in the beginning, but once you know how it works real easy

A belated welcome, Bill. Like you, I really started painting upon retirement (and recovery from illness). And like you, now I find that a day without painting is a disappointment! You'll find a jolly and helpful crowd here. Quite apart from the lessons, I really enjoy being able to talk painting and art with people of a similar mind set. Artists can be a bit isolated if their friends aren't artists too.  :welcome:

Now that I'm getting to know people I thought I'd show a more recent picture of me. Another of my hobbies is singing and playing the Ukulele.
