Hi There,

I have not been painting for quite a while due to a back operation and some other commitments.

I recently painted a portrait in soft pastel for my son-in-law's birthday.  The colors do not show up so well in the photo and is a bit dull.

Please feel free to critique.  Unfortunately he already took it but I must make another for my daughter and would like to know where I need to improve.

Thanks

Val

Hi Iris!    Nice to see you back. Hope all is well with you now, and your back is fine.

Sorry my eyes are not seeing your shadings very well so I'll let others comment there. What I am seeing is  ???
you have given Jayden pale blue eyes....and the photo looks dark brown! I'll leave that to you!  ;D

The shaping about the mouth seems a bit off. On HIS left side, you seem to have lost the contour, the line of his cheek comes almost straight down to his mouth, losing a bit of that happy rounded baby face.

having trouble seeing his chin properly so that's about all I can tell you.

I think this is a good portrait, with a few minor fixes will be absolutely fantastic.  O0   Especially in pastel! I am envious of your talents.
Cheers, Val

Hi,   :thankyou: for the comments.

Val I see what you mean about the cheek.  I knew there was something not right, but could not put my finger on it.

Jayden does have the most beautiful bright blue eyes, but the photo does not really show that.  The photo of the painting is a bit dull,  the colors are much brighter than what shows here.

The next one I try, I would surely try and get the colors brighter, or take a better photo  :)

Thanks for the critique and encouraging.  This was the first portrait painting I made.

My back is well now, just need to be very careful of what I do.

Love

Iris

Hi there,

Thanks Nolan for you comment.  I have done another Jayden.  This time I did it on the reverse side of the paper, which gave me a much smoother surface to work on.  I also used my color shapers to blend the colors better.

I cannot get the camera to take a picture with higher resolutions.  The colors of the painting is much more brighter and vibrant than the picture here.  The red is a warm tomato red and his hair is more blond than orang  :-\

Any critique will be welcome.  This time I am not giving it away before I am absolutely satisfied.

Love
Iris

 :thankyou: Fiona and Steve,

Last night I sat darkening the shadows and it looks much better.  Not so washed out.  Waiting for the mom to give her approval.

I also ordered myself some handmade soft pastels, so would probably get a better result.  I am trying and as they say practice makes perfect, but I still have a lot of practice to do :)

Iris,

I love this.  It almost has a Norman Rockwell feel to it.  I love the mouth!
