The 'dung' most commonly seen here if monkey poo.... they have deadly aim. Might be difficult finding anyone who wants the job of collecting.  :attacked: I think I'll take a pass....

I think a change in subject may be in order    ::)     ;D
Cheers, Val

Nice colorful  flower Mea. Too bad people complained about the paper.  I did buy some a while back after you purchased it.  Hope I will like it.  I bet it absorb very well but I guess it probably does not remove errors so well if we make them.

Thanks, Danielle.  I really like the hemp paper.  I may use it again.

Well, Val, this was a challenge - might be the hardest painting I ever did.  Still didn't get it dark enough.  Blending was tough.  Oh, I used Winsor and Newton Designer Gouache and a white charcoal pencil to try to bring out the highlights.

But, now that it's dry, it looks better.

Thanks for pushing us up a notch with this one.  Look forward to seeing how others do.

Good job in getting the different hues in the petals.   Challenging for sure, but I think you did a great job!

Really like the glow you achieved on this Mea, and lovely translucent pastelly colourings... Very pretty!

Thanks, Patricia, Trev, Mary Lou, and Gita. I appreciate your comments.

Not happy with it, but I did it.  It just seems to have too many hard edges.

Hi Mea. Somehow I've missed this thread before now. Have been wondering if anyone was using gouache. I bought a very cheap Daley & Rowley set (not Designer quality) and was not impressed. I'd heard a lot about its smooth matte finish, and how it was used by graphic designers and illustrators because its lack of shine made it easy to photograph, so I was quite disappointed. I've since been told that the cheap D&R set is a disaster and not to buy it. Oh the power of hindsight! My stuff was really chalky and uneven and needed many many layers to get an even coat. And the sort of washes you have been doing I think might be impossible. I've seen a few youtube on gouache technique now, and might give it another try sometime when I can afford to buy a decent set. Love your orchids in particular.

Thank you, Linley.

For me, the overarching decision to use gouache is that it allows you to fix mistakes quite easily.

Actually, I have a set of Daler and Rowney "Simply" Gouache.  It's a 24-tube set I bought at Walmart to use with my classes.  I used them the other day for a 10-group class and they worked fine.  I think D&R "Simply" series is a step above their usual quality for a discount store.  But, I doubt that I paid more than $15 for the set.  Here it is on Amazon - more expensive because of the shipping.

Thanks for the info Mea. I'll store the names of the gouache products. Amazon is coming to Australia in July. I often find a lot of their loveliest bargains "don't ship to Australia" at present, so I'm hoping that our supply range will broaden once they open up here.

Getting back to the elephant dung... we had Ofili's elephant dung portraits of the Madonna here in Tasmania in our MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) a while back. WONDERFUL. I loved it and was really looking forward to seeing it on multiple occasions, and then they sold it! :tickedoff: Huge, magnificent. In case you have forgotten, it's the painting that caused the then mayor of NY to try and ban it because he thought the medium was disrespectful. Cretan!

Just did a quick pirate ship for a birthday card for a little boy who loves pirates. Gouache paint.

Val, if you see one of these on the high seas, row the opposite way
