So one of my goals for 2017 was to take more oil painting classss. I started this months ago, than got very overwhelmed. Decided to try to finish it this week. Of course if I had known Nolan wasn't going to finish the lesson in the video tape, I probably never would have attempted this! But then again, it was good he did because it made push myself past my comfort zone. As someone new to oil painting, this was probably too advanced for me. So that's why I'm open to any and all suggestions to improve this from those of you who are more seasoned oil painters. Dang - it sure is a messy medium!!

Also, for those who have painted this (and seeing how few have posted their paintings should have been another clue not to attempt this!) how did you paint the sides?
Cheers,
Sharon

Well, it's been a lifetime or two since I painted with oils, but I must say as a newcomer to oils this is pretty darn amazing.
You did good.   O0        Oh alright then, you did GREAT!!!    :yippee:
Cheers, Val

:thankyou: Maria! I'm glad I saw yours after I did mine - it's spectacular! If I saw it in advance I may not have attempted to paint mine. I just love your paintings and aspire to be half as good as you in oils!

Sharon

Thank you, Mea!! I honest believe I got more paint on me than in the picture!! But now I'm inspired to try another one. The question is, which class should it be?!?

Sharon

Sharon, what are you complaining about?  Your rose is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!!! I wish I could paint half as well as you. I think it is absolutely fantastic and I can just imagine how beautiful it will look, adorning some lucky person's wall.  :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:  You are such a wonderful artist.

I agree with Patricia, you have done a fabulous job with this paint :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

It is actually a perfect painting for beginners as it is nothing more than a ton of shading work. Paintings like these teach you to spot your tonal values correctly without having to worry too much about the colour mixing side of things.

PS - Oil is only messy in the beginning. You soon learn to work neatly and before you know it you paint without getting dirty.

Tip - if you do see you have a spot somewhere it shouldn't be. Stop clean up the spot. See where you have other marks, clean them, then go hunt to see what caused the spot in the first place so you don't repeat O0

Thank you Patricia and Nolan! And the more I look at my painting the more I love it! Can't wait for it to dry so I can put it in a frame.

And Nolan - it was a brilliant lesson for teaching me not only how to add shade, but I eventually understood about lightly brushing to blend. In watercolors im so used to resting my arm on the paper when painting. I have to learn not to do that with oils - which means I need to have a much steadier hand!

This was an excellent class, Nolan. Thank you! I feel like a kid in a candy store as I figure out what class next to take  in oils!
Cheers,
Sharon
