Title: Lets Draw Course Instructions
Post by: nolan on October 16, 2011, 02:11:57 PM
Here are written instructions on how to access the course and get the menu to work on your computer

1) To access the course, click the palette icon at the top of your screen, it looks like this:

<- Click these images to enlarge

Note : You have to be logged in before you will see this icon

2) If you have only bought this course, you will immediately be taken to the course page. If however you have bought more than one course, you will first be presented with a list of all your courses. Find the box with the Lets Draw info in it and click the "Access Now" button. You will then see your course lessons.

Access Now button position

You will now see a screen that looks like this:

The first thing you will want to do is install the menu so that after the course has ended you are able to watch the course offline. To do this follow these steps:

3) Create yourself a Folder on your computer called something like "Lets Draw Course". You can either create it on your desktop or in the C drive. Anywhere as long as you can remember where you created it.

4) Download the menu zip file by right clicking it and selecting "save file as" from the menu. Save the menu zip file to your "Lets Draw Course" folder.

Your folder should look like this :

5) Unzip the menu inside the "Lets Draw Course" folder. Your folder should now look like this :

6) At this point you can test that the menu has installed correctly by double clicking the "Lets_Draw_Menu.html" file. A new window will open in your default browser which will look like this :

Note - NOTHING in the menu will work at this stage. As it stands it is just a placeholder for the course. In other words you will get a "Error loading file" message inside the video box and if you click any of the buttons they will open a new tab with an error saying "file not found". This is correct as you haven't downloaded any of the videos or pdfs or extras yet.

The full course is opened up over a period of 27 days. As these lessons open up and you download them, then the menu will gradually start filling up, eg., after you have downloaded the videos for day 0, then the videos for day zero and the day zero button will work on the menu. All the rest will still give you an error. By the end of the course, you will have downloaded all the files needed for the menu to work 100% when you click on any of the buttons, or select any of the videos.

You only need to install the menu once.

7) Next we need to start downloading the actual course lessons. The course consists of videos and pdf notes.
The videos are viewed by clicking the lesson heading in the left hand column and the pdfs notes are all in the right hand column.

To download the videos, click the heading, eg., click "Meet your tutor - Nolan". A popup will appear with the video in it like this :

To watch the video click either of the two play icons.

To download the video right click the blue download button and select "Save File As" from the menu.

Note : It is crucial that you now save the videos to your "Lets Draw Course" folder. If you don't then the menu will not work as the menu looks for them inside your "Lets Draw Course" folder when you select a video to watch.

Note : Don't rename the files. Save them exactly as they are. The menu expects the original file names, so if you rename them, then the menu won't work either.

Do the same for each video.

8} To download the pdf notes and other handouts: These are found in the right hand column as show below

Right click the "Download X-number" text link and select "Save File As" from the menu. Save the pdf to your "Lets Draw Course" folder.

Note : It is crucial that you now save the pdfs to your "Lets Draw Course" folder. If you don't then the menu will not work as the menu looks for the files inside your "Lets Draw Course" folder when you click the buttons.

Note : Don't rename the files. Save them exactly as they are. The menu expects the original file names, so if you rename them, then the menu won't work either.

9) On the first day of the course you can download the lessons for day zero and day 1. So after you have installed the menu and downloaded the videos and the pdfs for day zero and day 1, you can open the menu by double clicking the "Lets_Draw_menu.html" file inside your "Lets Draw Course" folder.

The videos for day zero and one will now play correctly. If you click button zero or button 1 inside the Manuals box, those pdfs will open correctly. All the other buttons and videos will not work yet.

10) Each day, the system will open up a new set of videos and lessons for you to download. The new lessons open up at exactly the same time of the day as when you originally purchased the course. So if you purchased the course at 7pm, then every day the next set of lessons will open up at 7pm.

Note : You will also receive an email reminder about your course lesson each day. These emails are send via the company that handles our mailing list. They send out the emails as it suits their schedule / load that day. This means that you may either get your email for the day earlier or later than the actual lessons becoming available on the site, depending on their schedule. This is out of our control unfortunately. Our lessons open up at exactly the correct time each day.

If you have any hassles accessing the course or setting up your menu please don't hesitate to ask here. We wil gladly help  O0

Hi Nolan,
I started the Learn to Draw last week.  I really am enjoying it.  However, I don't know if I am suppose to be sending you my projects that you have me do, so that they can be reviewed?  Please let me know and if I am, explain or refer me to directions to do this.

Thanks,
Rose M.

Rose, I'm not sure if I gave you a  :welcome: to Paintbasket, but it bears repeating.   :)

It's great news to hear that you are enjoying the drawing course.  Nolan and Dennis come by regularly to see what we are doing and give encouragement and expert advice.

We're a friendly community with a passion for art.

I'm looking forward to seeing your progress in the drawing course.  I have the DVD's and I'm itching to really get into them.

Hello to Lillian and Maryna,

I just found your replys on the Lets Draw Course Instructions forum, sorry I am so late to reply.  Thanks Maryna for your welcome to Paint Basket.  I am thrilled to have found this site.  I am new to drawing and painting, but feel I am learning a lot. Running a little behind this week.  The true test is drawing your own picture from the start.

Is this were I would see comments about my drawings or do I go to another place?  Also, have tried to use the emodicons, but can't figure out how to put them in replies.  I have tried clicking, copying and pasting? So far, haven't been able to do it.  Can someone advise me?

Thanks,
Rose M.

Hi Rose, when posting comments or asking for feedback you can simply select an appropriate feed under the pencil section or you can create a new post under the pencil section.  O0
To use an emoticon you just click on what pic you want like the smiley face, it will look strange while you type here but when you post the face will appear correct. Try it out   :D

Hi Rose,

If you continue to have questions, we're here to help.  We want to see you on the forum.  It's not really as complicated as it looks at first.  It shouldn't take you long to figure out all the features, just play around a bit and it will all become clear.   :gl2:

If you go to the forum home page, there is a section called Lets Draw Pencil Course, click that and then create yourself a new topic. From there you can post your questions  O0

To add a smiley, just click it. In the box you are typing a code will appear and not the actual smiley picture. This is the smiley code. When people view the post, the forum software will replace this code with the picture smiley  O0

Nolan--I have watched your video and read the instructions here on how to place downloads in a desktop file.  I was successful in creating a desktop file for the drawing course and in downloading lessons, but can't drag a download to the file.  I am running OS X and have a macbook pro.  Any ideas?

Nolan -

I was going to purchase the Let's Draw course today and I wanted to get the complete one....however, in looking at all the things you have to do in order to access it, I really don't know how to do these things (like create folders, store on C drives, etc.  I am totally and profoundly technically challenged so for someone like me, which of the other 3 is the best option?  I so wish I could do the one I really want but I can tell I'll never figure it out.  I would really appreciate your advice.   :thankyou:

Mary, I had a little trouble but finally figured it out. Is there anyone within your household or close by who can help you create the folder, etc.?  That would be the easiest.  However, maybe Nolan can help you..  I would try, but I sometimes seem to take the long way around things   I'm sure there are lots of sharp computer skilled techies out there somewhere.  Somebody  :help: Mary!

Polliwag - The general skill level in this house is texting and I'd probably have to text THEM (which I also haven't mastered  lol) but maybe I can beg my older son to help his poor mother navigate the occult world folders, drives, etc.  Now it's just catching him...and wanna laugh?  He's a computer engineer!  I COULDN'T have been his mother!  :2funny:

Mary - I had to laugh at your description of the realm of folders, etc.  My son is also a Mechanical Enigineer with a Masters Degree in some sort of computing field!  I don't even know enough to know exactly what he does - Loadable Software for Boeing Airplanes, but that's about all I know!  And, when he's not working, he really doens't want anything more to do with computers!!  IF I pin him down, he will spend HOURS and HOURS working on a problem until he figures it out!  I hate to do that to him!  But, being that he learned from my dad, and I did also, I'm pretty computer literate in the things I NEED to know!  My dad telecomuted in the mid '80's when most people didn't even own a computer, so my son got his interest and knowlege from him.

As for the Drawing Course, I got the DVDs so I didn't have to worry about an intrnet connection.  All I have to do is put in the DVD for the day I want.  Of course, then I had problems making the souind work!  I think you could figure out the folders, though.  Once it's set up, it would be fine, and I know you'd get lots of help here!  Whatever you decide, the course is FUN!  I've just got started, and can hardly wait to get to the next lessons.

Hysterical, Pat!  My personal favorite was when my favorite Bose speakers were "broken," I asked for assistance and was told they were dead.  A few weeks later, I ventured into his apartment and lo and behold...guess what his music was playing on!  When I had laptops, he only "knew" pcs...when I got a pc, he only knew laptops!  So, this is why I don't even bother to ask!  I could PAINT a computer faster than I'd get a consult!   :2funny:

Mary the online course has video instructions that show you how to install the menu, so you just follow along with the video.

As an aside, the Lets Draw course will soon be moving over to the Paint Basket TV page, so those that have the online course will always have access to the classes through the website as well O0

Mary -  :2funny:  I know what you mean!  I'll pay someone rather than wait to find time for my son to help me!  He's really great, but I know he'd rather be doing something else with his free time!  Plus, he wants to tell me everything about everything, and my brain is just to full (no - NOT OLD) to hold all that information!  I just want it to work, I don't really care how!  I guess I used to want to know "how and why", but it just changes way too fast for me to keep up with it any more!!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to having you "in class" with us other Let's Draw students!

Pat - That's the one I got - the online version.  You see, I don't really have enough to do yet with being behind 3 watercolors and 2 oils yet...so I did the logical thing...put MORE pressure on myself!  Fortunately, it hasn't arrived yet because if it did, I'd probably be scribbling and drooling in a corner because I'd HAVE to start it!  And this should REALLY be good because I can't draw my way out of a paper bag!  I'm really starting to wonder about myself... :2funny:

Thank you, Nolan....

I have still not received it but I was just about to write about email in general.  It's not just this.  As of yesterday, I'm suddenly not getting any mail from PB - the kind that notifies you that there's a reply in a post you're following.  I did, however, get the receipt for the course.  I didn't get the message alerts either re yesterday's class so I've been going directly to the site to read.

What I've done so far is check my settings here which are normal.  I've checked my spam folder and nothing's there as well.  To the best of my knowledge, nothing has changed on my computer in terms of settings or anything new that might influence mail so that's what I was going to tell you which would explain why I didn't get the course yet.  I don't know how to fix it beyond those checks I've already done.  Stumped  (and I haven't even started the class!  LOL)  Computers are not my friends!

Nolan...not two seconds after hitting send with my last message to you, I just received ALL the mail from PB yesterday, including the class notification.  The Let's Draw course was not among them and it looks like everything came in sequential order.  I have no idea why that is.  I can't rule out that it's not an AOL issue because they're notorious for problems.  Otherwise, I just don't know.

Sorry for the multiple posts, Nolan, but just trying to add more clues....something new that's happening as of this huge batch of mail I just received is that the forum topics are including mine....for example, I just wrote the below to you and I received it in a forum notification that a reply had been posted in a topic I was following but it was my reply.  That's never happened before as they always start with the last reply I saw on a particular board so I don't know whether this is new or something off happening here.

Day 3 came through email and was the only thing I got for the day oddly.  I'm going to get rid of aol and go to gmail in the next day or two..this was the last straw with them...NO ONE must interfere with Paint Basket!

I love your enthusiasm, Azbutterfly. Drawing in your head is a sign of creative readiness. If you registered for the on-line class, you might want to click the big blue 'Watch Paintbox tv Now' button at the top of each page, then the green 'My Unlocked Classes' button, and finally the pencil drawing button. Your first class may already be there. If you don't have the Internet version, you could still scroll down on the forum page to the Let's Draw Class topic and look through some of the members' work. You could even set up your own topic under Let's Draw Class so you are all ready to go! Won't be long now, promise!!!!!

Rita, Glad You Are Back!  I am trying to stay in touch here, but our family has grown so that I just can't keep up with everyone's posts. Slowly but surely, I am trying to get back to some sort of routine on my drawing and painting.  If I'm ever going to improve, I have to stick with it!  Hope you are doing well!

The Challenge would be great. Thanks, Val. And Rita, I was also sad to see the Let's Draw class be over. There are some bonus drawings of Dennis' that you can work with at the very end. I liked having one place to post my drawings, to see progress. I didn't want poor Nolan to keep having to sift through, so I started a new place to post my drawings up in the the Pencil Encourager section. Roxy moved up there last week. I don't know that she is going to put her things together in one place, however. Come join us if you like. You have to find your own subjects, but that is part of the fun. And we can't let that drawing bug get away!!! You are way too good for that. Come on up! The more the merrier. Maybe we can make that section as alive and fun as the Let's Draw Section.

Since we need to keep our pencils sharp and our wits sharper we are there. . . .  :2funny: :2funny:

Sarah i do have some of my drawings already there, the portraits and those cute cats, and ofcourse my metalic glaze pitcher and birthmandala, but making just one topic for the drawings sounds better, now i have eight!!! topics there for every drawing one, so i think i throw them all in one new topic.

Hello All

I wonder if someone could give me a little guidance here please, I have downloaded and installed the menu, it also works.
My question is; should pdf files be in the resource folder or just in the same folder as the video files?
I ask this because; I am not able to view the pdf files from the menu, my files are in the same folder with the video files.
I can however view them by directly clicking them in the folder itself.

Thank you for any advice.

Peter

What came in the Resources folder should be all that is in there. Everything else you download should be in the Let's Draw folder including the html menu file.

I just purchased the Lets Draw online course and don't see a serial number. Is the invoice number the serial number to activate the course or don't I need to activate it because the email receipt says:

"You can now access the class on the Paint Basket TV page.
You will find the class by clicking the green My Classes button
Note: There is no need to unlock the class, we have already unlocked it for you.
Other Instructions : You can access your course HERE"

I also don't see any palette icon next to my name after I log in nor any place to download the menu. Is it because I have only purchased the one course?

Thank you!

Hi Pam

There is no unlock code required, just follow the instruction in your original email to access :

You can now access the class on the Paint Basket TV page - bug blue button at the top of the page.
You will find the class by clicking the green My Classes button

Let me know if you have any hassles

Enjoy the course and  :thankyou: for the support, we appreciate it  :flowers:

Nolan. I purchased the Pencil Course last night, received the email, but no Serial Number. There was an Invoice number, but that doesn't work when I try to activate. Also, I don't have the Palette Icon next to my photo?? I can access the Day 1 video's but not the main menu. What am I missing?

Thanks,

Jelackey - if you bought the full course, you should just be able to click on the Watch PB TV sign in the middle of the home page; then click on Unlock a class which will show you the mediums you could work with. You should see the Let's Draw course there so click on that and it should open up your individual lessons. That's assuming you have the same version I have. Hope it works for you.  Otherwise, Nolan will rescue you if he sees your post here or you write him via email.  Hope this helps.  :)

Thanks for the help. I can view the video's and download the pdf files. But looking at the instructions that Nolan posted, I thought there may be another screen to access all the files in one place vs. opening and saving the files from each video screen. Also I don't see the palette in the upper portion of the screen he shows in the instruction.

I purchased the full online course. I assume each day's lessons open in order vs. access to all the classes available at one time?

I just clicked on my palette and it opens to course info that no longer seems needed now that Nolan recently converted the course to the format we can use by accessing just what you did. You can pick what ever order you want but I think since each class builds upon the next, it makes sense to use the order already laid out. If you're trying to save to your hard drive, that's a whole other level way beyond my meager tech skills and something Nolan would have to advise. In this sleek new way he set it up, all I need is to click on the video and print the PDF and hope my Internet never goes down while I'm using it!   :2funny:

Hi hoping this is the right place to ask this.

I purchased the Let's Draw course yesterday.   I am fairly technologically sound, but... I have tried following the instructions but what I am able to do is not the same as what I am told to do.  Example... I cannot right click on any of the downloads I have to open them and then choose save as.  Nothing looks the same as what it does on Nolan's instructional video.  Is this due to an upgrade in how they run the course now maybe?

I do not have a picture of a palette near my login details  :( , but I can get in through my "watch tv now" button.  When opening any of the lessons/videos etc for day 0 and day 1 the first resource I.e. Number 1 on each one all say "content not currently available on mobile devices"

I have been on via my laptop and desktop and they still say the same.  I can get the videos and some PDFs but I am worried that I am missing something important on the number 1 choice.  :help: please
Title: Re: Lets Draw Course Instructions
Post by: nolan on February 09, 2014, 02:40:53 PM
Hi Lisa

Yes the system has changed a bit since I first recorded the video so where you actually find the videos has changed.

All the Lets Draw classes are now on the Paint Basket TV page under the Pencil Drawing heading (http://www.paintbasket.com/paintbaskettv/?stream=my-classes&medium=pencil)
With each class click the watch button so that the video pops up.

Initially you want to do this with the relevant how to save your course watch button (PC or Mac)
In the Resources box you will find the menu zip file
Right click it and select "Save As".
Save to your desktop for now.
Then go create a directory on your computer where you will be saving your course.
Extract the zip file into this directory
Delete the zip file

Each day you want to save the video and the pdf to the same folder
Underneath the video is a blue download button. Right click the button and select "Save As"
On the pdf link you can also right click and select "Save As"

To watch the course offline, go to the folder you have created for the course and double click the Lets_Draw_Menu.html file

from there you can select which video to watch or which pdf to read

Initially most of the menu will not work as you have not downloaded the required files yet - Only the days you have downloaded should work. By the end of the course however you will have downloaded everything and the entire menu should function as expected.

:thankyou: Nolan please ignore the email I sent which is exactly the same  I should have waited.  So all is good as long as I am not missing any files.

The one I received today (day 2) has the following under the watch link

Video of you :-)

Download button in blue

And underneath that...

RESOURCES
1.          The course is not currently available on mobile devices.
2.          Erasing PDF - right Click and save to your Lets Draw folder

So I am hoping that there is not supposed to be another file where number one is.  If not then I am all good :)

sounds about correct Lisa O0
also don't panic as you download each class. the file names / numbers do not run in order. The menu will know which file is which ;)

Hi,
I just joined the pencil drawing "club" but see now that the Let's Draw course is not included.  Is this course essential or will I learn all I need to know by following those courses included in the "club" membership?  I'm new to drawing.  I did the free beginner class already.....and will keep doing it until the egg I dre turns into a ball! :)
Thanks

The Lets Draw has a bit of everything in it, so is a good intro to a ton of subjects and techniques. Following the club classes will also get you up and running. Once you have completed the club classes, then you can do the Lets Draw if you want.

Hi' Nolan, I may be in the wrong forum. I think I joined the pencil drawing club, so that may be a totally different thing. I don't know. The video I viewed was Getting Started with Pencils What do I do to do the Let's Draw Course ?

Hi Luci

Yes you are a pencil club member. The Lets Draw is a separate course, which is unfortunately not part of the club and is a separate purchase.

What you want to do is go to the Classes > Pencil Drawing > Lesson Plan menu
Then follow the classes underneath the Getting started with pencil drawing. Follow them in their order to get the best results. O0
eg do the pencil shading techniques class next, then the how to draw onions class, etc.

Hi Nolan, Thanks again for mailing the DVD.  I have been listening to the first few videos.  As you know, I was in the Drawing Club which I enjoyed and learned so much from you and Dennis.  So now I'm in the Let's Draw Course.  I have a question about the landscape drawing:

I noticed that you fill in the graphite for all the mountains, then go back and erase for the highlights.

Is this technique easier than using a lighter pencil for highlights areas and doing less erasing?

I do know that erasures like the lighthouse with fields of flowers worked out better when the graphite filled in quite heavy, then the flowers stood out when erasing.  Anyway, waiting for your reply. . . THANKS!
~Liz
