Title: Mea's Art Class for Senior Citizens
Post by: mea hamo pena on August 02, 2016, 09:37:44 PM
The local community association has asked me to do a series of art classes for our senior citizens.

I figured the easiest thing to do and the most logical place to start with would be a drawing lesson.

Thanks to my friend and fellow PB-er Liz, I have plenty of cardboard for them to draw on.  Here is the sample for the first class.

I will start with doing practices on drawing paper: graphite rubbing for the sky, then erase out some clouds (hopefully better than mine look here).  Next we will do the "heart monitor" trees and reflections. Then we will practice flicking the fronds of the palm leaves.

Then we will put everything onto the white 8 x 10" cardboard.

I also bought each one an inexpensive daily sketch book, pencil, and eraser so they can practice at home.

Thanks, Nolan, for all you taught me.  I'm excited about doing this.  I will bring my tablet and introduce them to Paintbasket in case they want to follow up!  I will also set up some of my drawings and paintings like a little art gallery to get them in the mood.

Wish me luck.

This is great Mea.  Good mix to get started... don't forget a cup of tea or coffee when you describe your painting.

I suspect you will have a much fun as they will.  Enjoy!

Thank you, Val, Annie, Maryna, and Susan.  I appreciate your enthusiasm for this activity  Hope the seniors feel the same way.

Annie - no tea - I'd have to make too many trips to the bathroom.

I'll try to get a photo of the class to post on the FORUM!

I was set to start classes up again tomorrow, but due to the expected weather conditions will have to postpone until next week.  :(

Should be great fun this year... I have 7 cruising kids as well!  :goofy:     :2funny:

Thanks, Steve.  I was hesitant to draw on the brown cardboard but Patricia talks about using "toned tan," so I thought it might work out okay.

Hey, Val, too bad we live so far apart, we could start an art school.

As Steve said, there is something quite intriguing about it! How did you get the white highlights? did you use a white pencil?

I can hardly wait for regular updates on your classes and students.

Had a class of 9.  They loved it.  One lady was almost in tears because she had never drawn anything before.

They want me back as often as possible and were thrilled with what they drew and loved getting their own sketchbook, pencil, and eraser to take home.

I showed them the basics of using Paintbasket so I hope a few sign up.

Teaching the class to smudge in a sky.  They thought that technique as so cool.

Look how proud they are of their drawings.

I am so pleased that it was a good experience for everyone - especially me.  Thanks Nolan and Dennis for teaching me the skills to pass on to others.

They are certainly very fortunate to have you as their tutor and I can imagine how much fun you have brought into their lives. Judging from the photograph of them showing their drawings, one can almost sense the happiness in what they have achieved, thanks to you. Wishing you every success and looking forward to hearing more about your art class and yes, I love the toned tan paper. Your drawing came out beautifully on the tan cardboard too.

I am practicing a simple hibiscus to do with my senior citizen class next time.  I used a simple 6-dot system.  One for each petal and one for center.  Then I drew each petal from center, around the dot, then back to center.

I did this one freehand with no reference photo.

Do note that I still have not learned to do shadows.  My leaf is not very good either.  Leaves next!

What else?

Nicely drawn Mea. Just think back to your painting methods...

1./ Choose your light source.

2./ All shadings go darker the further away you go from the light source, lighter the closer you get.

3./ There will only be a cast shadow if the object is laying against, over, or on something else.

Check in the Let's Draw course... the berries lesson.  O0

Thank, Val.  I'll review the berries class today.  Was that in Let's Draw?

Notice that the shadow of my stamen was darker than the one on the yellow hibiscus.  I'm a fast learner!

Post by: mea hamo pena on August 08, 2016, 03:05:27 PM
No, Kathy, I made it up to help me make the petals.

Here is a simple diagram.

Some petals will overlap more than others.  Vary the shapes a bit.

The dots just help you space out the petals evenly.  I was surprised how easy it was once I had the dots in place to guide me.

Hmmm.... now I am going to try the same idea for other flowers.

Maybe when the seniors get their flower drawn, we'll do a simple watercolor wash to color it!  They'd love that.

I have another senior citizen art class today.  They want to draw a hibiscus, so I am all prepared.

I drew the outline shape quite dark to help them see it better, but will instruct them to make their lines quite light so as not to look like "coloring book" work.

The big surprise will be when I hand them the watercolor pencils and they get to colorize them.

I am excited.  Will post the results later today.

It needs to add a little computer class to teach how to navigate PB.

One can hock a laptop to a monitor, and while you teach one the others can see.

I could think of a schedule.... lesson 1 overview, 2 classes, 3 profile, 4 forum, 5 safety, etc.

Oops!  Sorry you teach art, too bad I am far away.  Maybe your admin student would like to take the challenge...

Yes, it is a wonderful world  :flowers:

Annie,

We live in a rural area so transportation for seniors is a problem.  The nearest library is 5 miles away for most of them.  And it's on the high school campus so access there to computers is quite competitive.

Just obstacles to overcome.

Val's right, Rick.

I'll bet there's a senior center of some sort close to you.  By starting with pencil drawing, the up front cost is very small.

I bought just a small range of pencil values to start (an H, a low B and a high B), a thick pad of decent drawing paper, erasers (I bought those little pointy ones that fit on the top of a pencil and they worked perfectly - CHEAP, like maybe a pack of 36 for $2).  I had all the pencils sharpened at home, but brought my electric sharpener with me, but never used it.

Hope you can find a place.  It is one of the most worthwhile things I have ever done!

That's how I felt to. I had only completed a few lessons here when I was asked to take over the art classes here. There were a couple of people that painted far better than I did. BUT, I had learned a few techniques that they didn't know, and vice versa. So we all learn together. I suppose you could say I earned my 'teaching degree' by teaching them what NOT to do!!!   :2funny:

No thanks. I appreciate the hype but I'm not a teacher. I haven't got a clue on where to begin and don't care to know how. It doesn't interest me in the least. The last thing I want to do is get up in front of a bunch of people and make a fool of myself. I've never been a public speaker and don't want to be one now.
It's not for me. I'll take the student's seat, thank you.  :)

Rick,

My reference was more about learning to draw than teaching the class.  It was the "learning to draw" part that I was advocating.

Hope you find a group you can join.

I am multi-tasking today
   1. Prepping for my senior citizen class on Wednesday - they want to learn to draw leaves.
   2. Doing more daily doodling

I plan to talk about different shapes of leaves (hope they bring samples), colors, parts, etc.  Then we will practice making stems, shading veins, etc.

Next I will give them a picture of a mango and leaf to study, then practice by tracing on it.

Then they will use the dot-system I invented for drawing a hibiscus to do the same in forming their own mango and leaf. After drawing and shading, they will get to color wash it, then mat it.  Not sure we can do all that in 90-minutes, though.

I've heard there is a serious buzz about our class whenever the seniors meet now.  Makes me feel good.

Will take photos so you can see how they did.

Title: Re: Mea's Art Class for Senior Citizens
Post by: mea hamo pena on September 05, 2016, 10:42:00 AM
KathyS.

Dot system -  I use a simple 6-dot system.  One for each petal and one for center.  Then I drew each petal from center, out around the dot to form a petal, then back to center  - overlapping petals and adding some scalloping to the edges.

Here's what I mean by the dot system, Kathy S.

Start at center dot.  Draw first petal out way outside the dot, then back to center. (making  a few scalloped edges) Next ones can start as overlapping, but always return to center.

Hope that makes sense.

Another happy bunch!  I had ten in the class at one point today - three new faces.

One was a very well-respected artist in the community, actually quite well known around the world for his wood carvings. (Even declared a Living Treasure in Hawaii).  I was intimidated at first , but by the end of class, he thanked me and said he had actually learned from me.

We did a class on leaf drawing and it went really well.  I showed them how important it was to not be afraid of the dark.  As they drew their leaves, I went by and shaded one corner around a vein for them, and they instantly saw the difference, then proceeded to finish their leaves.  Most got to draw a mango, then color wash it.

I told them that in just three classes, I have already seen their improvement and I know they are feeling it, too.

This is one of the most gratifying things I have ever done.

This topic about my Senior Citizen art class has been moved to MOTIVATION as it has out grown its DRAWING topic.

We are going to do a watercolor this week - a shark.  This particular design should be simple enough for them to try.

I plan to do another sample of this before the class on Wednesday. My little neighbor boy wants this one.

What can I do to make it better?

Mea, the blue of the water has some brown in it. The body of the shark will have more colour contrast if the blue is applied with clean water without mixing with darker colours. The bottom of the shark needs some shadows.
After watching many classes of various artists now, I have come to a conclusion: I prefer to keep my water colours clean. Artists have very different opinions here.

This week we will do sharks in senior citizen art class.  Here are the samples.

The blue cardboard is done with regular graphite pencil.

The tan cardboard is done with my new water-soluable graphite pencils, white charcoal, and watercolor Pencils in blues and a green.

I want to do more experimentation with the water-soluable graphite, so will set up a topic in the Pencil General Chat section when I get to it.

Just in case, I may do a sample dolphin in case the shark is too hard for some.

I had my six regular students today. We painted roosters with colored pencils.  They are so enthusiastic and three of them are getting really good.  They draw and paint at home and bring their work to class to show.

I think they did better on this lesson than any so far.  The pencils were very inexpensive ($1.29 USD) Crayola in a 12-pack. They color evenly and are so smooth; they even erase fairly well..  We used  100lb, Strathmore Colored Pencil paper.

Since they did so well with the colored pencils, I will have them use them next week to make 5 x 7 inch Christmas cards.

Sorry, Gita, I get so carried away during the class, I forget to do closeups.  I will try to remember.  Unless they have already given a piece away, they tend to bring everything with them.

There are three who faithfully work in their sketchbooks between classes.  I'll have to get some photos of those.

Thank you for wanting to see their work.

Here are some artworks by three students in my class.  They truly are in awe of their new-found talent and thoroughly enjoy coming to class.

Tony does some really detailed work on flowers.  She has a great sense of shading and color mixing.

Rhoda takes postcards of my work and makes copies for practice.  It makes me feel like I am Van Gogh and she is trying to imitate my work.  Very flattering.

Doris is a real sparkplug in our class.  She is so excited about what she can now do - never entered her mind all her life to give art a try - now she's addicted.

Last photo - My class presented me with a Certificate of Appreciation.    I tell them they are my substitute for grandchildren.  They bring me such pleasure,

Today's lesson was a simple still life with glass in it.outline of the glass and then erase out the highlights, as Nolan taught us.  Then we added some flowers to the vase.

The lady on the right is holding my reference painting that we were going to use as a model, but we didn't have enough time to do anything that detailed.

They are such a joyful group to work with.

Next class, we are going to paint a small flower in acrylic on 3" x 3" canvases, to give as Valentine gifts.

Please try to get a close look at how well she did these leaves.

She has physical ailments that limit what she can do, but she still manages to turn out fine work.

P.S. It was Ash Wednesday,; hence the black cross on her foerhead.

Here are the class members with their matted pieces.  They were thrilled to go home with their own work of art.

It's been a month since I worked with my seniors although on Saturday, we wore our hand-painted t-shirts at the community fair (ho`olaulea).  We got lots of compliments on them and people wanting to join our class.

Tomorrow is my first day back with them so it will be interesting to see if we have any new people.

We are going to work on watercolor techniques.  One will be doing rock walls with line and wash.  Here are a couple of quick sketches for them to use as examples.  I just paint blotches of paint, then draw the rock shapes over the colors.  We can add highlights and shading after the rocks are defined.

I think they will enjoy this.  If time permits, we will do a small composition with a rock wall in a seascape.

Will post what we come up with.

Thanks, everyone, for the positive comments on the last class.

Here's what I have planned for tomorrow.  It's back to basics - pencil drawing.

I am going to go over all the tools I have for graphite pencil drawing - let them work with different types of pencils, erasers, sharpeners so they can see the range available as I got them a grant to buy supplies.

This apple study shows one done with the Staedler lumograph pencils (top - round apple); Tombows drafting pencils (bottom); Derwent water soluable graphite (right side - brushed lightly with water.)  They can chose which one they want for their apple.

Will let you know how it goes.

They loved working with water-soluable pencils and did a really good job on their apples.  They were even reluctant to stop for lunch.  Had to stop, though, so they did not get to put shadows and signature.

Those apples look delicious.  :)  How wonderful that  you were able to get a grant for their supplies!  Looks like you all had a great time.

Thank you, Patricia, Val, Annie, and Mysti

Luckily, I was asked to help dissolve a grant-making foundation in my community and the senior program where I do my art class qualified on many levels for funding - we now have $20,000 to help keep services going for seniors for quite a while, as all the help is volunteer.  The funding pays for supplies, transportation for outings, etc.

The other two programs we funded were a dental van to visit the elementary schools and needed renovations to our local medical center emergency room.

Mea, I am in awe when I see the charity work and the art work you are doing!  The best compliment of a happy group is that they opted to skip lunch!
It's nice to see the improvement in art of all your students. I like the fish as a subject. The colours are bright and optimistic!

Thanks, Gita.  Being retired and no family nearby, I have lots of time on my hands, so I do volunteer work as a hobby (besides art of course).

Thanks, Val.  The art class has proven to be a favorite of all the activities offered to seniors.  My friend's exercise class is big too.

This week, I will have my senior citizen class work with Toned Tan paper (Strathmore 400 series).  Nice smooth paper - the colored pencils slid right over it.

I did some practice pieces today - have to stay one step ahead of the class as I had never used toned tan before.

Enjoyed doing these. Except for the sea scape, the pencils are all earth, white, and gray tones.

Im sure your group will enjoy the class.  Do you think the colour pencils worked well on this paper Mea, you say slid over it, meaning it took well or it didnt?   I was thinking to get either the Strathmore 400 or Canson Mi Teints

Sorry, Win.  I meant "slid" as a good thing. The pencils glided so smoothly, easy to blend.  I am going to buy more of the Strathmore 400 tomorrow as supplies for my class.

Thanks, EmmaLee.  It was fun seeing how the colors would look on the toned paper.  Yes, I think my class will enjoy it.

I bought grey toned paper today so did the sample exercise on the grey paper.  (Ugh, the highlight on the ball is too squarish - no time to do another one before class.)

I will show them how I did both tones, then let them chose which tone they want to practice with.  Bet they'll chose the tan because I bought new earth tone pencils and they'll want to use them, rather than black graphite.

It would be interesting to see the earthtone pencils on the black and paper and vice versa with the black pencil on the tan. I've been learning a lot lately about how toned backgrounds change the overall look of a painting/drawing. Actually, it would be interesting to see the earthtone used on both the black and tan papers to see how it affects the mood of the drawing.   Another experiment in the making!  :2funny:

Hmmm,Val.  Interesting challenge.  I could split the paper in half and do black/grey on tan and half in earthtones on tan - using the same scene.

Then do grey paper with half done in black/grey and other half in earthtones  - using the same scene as the tan.

Hmmm...sounds interesting.

:D I'll be doing a few small paintings, repeating them on different coloured papers to see the effects. Should be fun!

Yes, Dennis.  On class day, I did it step-by-step with my students and it came out better and I explained to them about the fading away.
