Title: Masonite Board and Canvas Help...
Post by: johnbeam on March 24, 2016, 06:23:35 AM
I decided to try and paint on hardboard and man its frustrating! I used 4 layers of gesso and created a pretty smooth surface with a smooth paint roller... So it has a little texture but I can't get the paint to blend like I do on canvas... my brushes form hard edges and its almost impossible to blend on the board... the paint just pushes around etc...

I wonder if there is some solution to this... I like the idea of smooth surface to create detail but this is way to frustrating :(

I'd also like to try and make my own canvas with a smooth tooth... does anyone have recommendation on a smooth canvas I could order? I think that may work better than the board at this point...

Thanks... :thankyou:

I am also not a big fan of smoothing a canvas down like that for the same reason

Hi John, my experience with masonite is that it lends itself to textured painting very well.  Folks who like a very smooth look on their paintings use linen canvas which has a finer weave.  Also,  the 'give' on a canvas surface allows smoother blending.  Compare your results with cotton and linen canvas.
