Title: Robyn's Let's Draw Course
Post by: valhalla31 on March 08, 2016, 05:49:31 PM

Here is my 10 minute tree. I think I may have cheated and taken a bit longer because I forgot to set the timer.

I am 50 years old and haven't done anything artsy since high school. I went to a wine and canvas event one night and it brought back all the joy I used to get from creating as a teenager. So I have started taking a few online classes and here I am.

Here is my landscape. This is the second one I drew. The first one was all finished before I realized my horizon line was totally crooked. I must have had the pad of paper tilted while I drew. I will have to watch out for that in the future.

....and my shaded ball. I have a lot of trouble with cast shadows. I can never seem to get them just right.

Valhalla,

Nice work on the shaded ball.  I hear you on the cast shadows - me, too!

Check the top right quadrant - could use a bit more blending - too much of a line between dark and light.

Keep at it.  Making good progress.

Here are my berries. I continue to struggle with cast shadows. I fiddled and fiddled with this and then just decided to post it for some feedback.

Robyn,

Looks good for the most part, but I think the leaves could use more darks.

Hi Robyn.  I like your cast shadows and the shading of your berries is beautiful.  I agree with mea. Some deeper tone in the leaves.  :)

Thank you Kathy and Mea. I do agree with you about the darker values on the leaves but, if I follow the example picture those leaves are quite light. I am assuming they are getting a lot of bright sunlight on them which is making them so washed out?? I will try darkening them a little.

Here is my rock pile. This was a difficult lesson and the eraser became my best friend. 8)
I am using graphite transfer paper to transfer the outline and I am finding that it is hard to get a very light line and the line doesn't erase as advertised. Hence the dark contour line on the very top rock, which I don't like very much. I need to remember to trace with a very light touch.

beautiful shading work on the berries Robyn :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
just the extra contrast in the 3 top leaves. Your cast shadows are great O0

Rocks - excellent spotting of the different tonal values, you have great depth in this drawing, well done :congrats:

Robyn,
Your work thus far is quite nice. Your shadings give everything a nice contoured shape. I am still working on gradual shading in my drawings hopefully I will also catch on to what you seem to have grasped already. I am looking forward to more of you drawings.
Best,
Dekay

Here is my crosshatch mug. I really have to find a better way to photograph these or use a different paper because the shadows cast by the wavy paper are distracting. I am standing the pad of paper on my easel, maybe I will trying laying it flat next time.

Robyn

Nice work on the cup.

The right side of the oval at the top needs a bit more rounding on the inside of the rim.  Actually, it might be round under that dark drip of coffee.  Blend that tiny section in and you may have the rounding you need.  Love the way you have a nice slope on the left side of the inside top.

I've had the same problem with the sketch pad.   Maybe try large elastic bands to the far sides of the pad to try to hold the page more flat.  If they are far enough to the sides, they should be easy enough to crop out of the photo.

Also use some sort of small wedge to prop the pad up on the side that sags under its own weight.  Yes, last resort, lay it flat but be mindful of how your shadow might be cast over it.

Keep at it.  You are making great progress.

Robyn,

That that is one nicely cross-hatched teddy bear.  You did very well.

One tiny tweak - look at the sleeve on the right.  Where it meets the arm, just darken that area as the sleeve should cast a shadow on the arm.  Just a tiny bit of dark there will make a difference.

Keep at it - you are making incredible progress.

By the way, I have used this drawing as a new baby gift and it was very well received.  Baby's first piece of art!Or use a jpg of it on a child's gift card.

Thanks Kathy and Mea. I will look at that area you suggest and touch it up.

Funny you mention a baby gift because I am expecting my first grandchild this September. What a wonderful idea!

Yes, Steve, I do enjoy it. I usually do it with a fine tipped pen though, so the pencil was quite different. Huge bonus is, if I make a mistake I can just erase it and try again.  O0

Here is my scumbled goldfish (koi). I am not too happy with the way the dorsal fin turned out and parts of the tail. I kind of just gave up on it. Any suggestions?

Overall, it looks good to me. O0 O0

If you don't mind a beginners opinion, the dorsal fin and tail need some more transparency. Pretty much like what you did with the two bottom middle fins. The dark don't extend all the way back on those.

Hi Robyn. The scumbling lesson is a fun one, isn't it?  :D  Like Steve, I am still a beginner but I'll share my own experience since it is still fresh in my mind. For the fins, I'm thinking to lighten up the dark area temporarily. Then use the technique that Nolan taught to get that feathery edge on the fins by going lightly with the side of your pencil as you let the side of your opposite thumb or finger act as a stopper. No hard edges. When you go back to darken, use flicks with a darker pencil. I'm thinking a little sharper pencil might help but I may be wrong on that.

Your doing beautiful work. It's those details we are all learning together.  :deal:

It's worth a try what KathyS and Steve had to say.

Won't take much to go from good to better.
