Title: Mea's Art on Display
Post by: mea hamo pena on February 27, 2016, 09:29:33 AM
Tomorrow I will deliver three oil paintings to an art exhibit at Honolulu Country Club.  The show has a water theme and will last for 6 weeks.

I quickly propped up the three paintings I am bringing at the foot of my bed to show you what I have.  They will be for sale.

Also I got a commission last night to do an 8 x 10 oil of my W palms that you have seen me post many times. Have to start that right away.

And,one of my Hawaii state bird painting has been accepted for showing in March at Honolulu City Hall in a show sponsored by the Association of Hawaii Artists.

I am really excited.

Thanks, Sarlota, Susan, Patricia, and KathyS.  I feel like I have my own little fan club.

I have never been to this venue before so I have no idea what to expect.  Luckily, the curator has emailed me every step of the way and has been so supportive.

I'll have my camera with me and hope I can get some photos.  The country club is in a beautiful tropical setting (as are all golf courses in Hawaii - duh!).

We were working so hard to get all the paintings up that I forgot to take any photos, but I will at the reception on Sunday.

The gallery is actually a big open lobby of the golf club house.  Quite spacious.

I was proud that my three paintings looked as good as most of them.  Mine were very different and were quite noticeable.  The nene goose is one of the very first ones as you come through the door.

I learned a lot about hanging art for a gallery showing.  The curator even said I had some good ideas for her when I suggested certain paintings for certain places.

All in all, a great day.  Thanks, everyone for being so supportive.

Will have a better feel for possible sales after the reception on Sunday.  Not sure what kind of foot traffic this places draws, although the gallery is in the lobby so everyone going into the building has to pass by the paintings and two of mine are in the very first three pictures they pass.

Thanks, Sharon.  Have no idea what to expect as I live an hour away from the exhibit, so hate to ask my friends to go out on a Sunday evening to see my work that they see all the time at my house.  Hopefully, the other artists live closer and can draw a crowd.

Maybe some of the golf club members will view the work as they go into the dining room.

I really enjoyed the exhibit tonight. A few friends came by and brought me a lei.

The curator of the show made sure I met several well-known artists.  Two already knew my name and work through Facebook.

The painting that best portrayed the theme - water - was chosen by all attendees, including the artists.  I did not vote for mine because there was one so much better.  But, one gentleman came up to me and said he voted for mine.  I asked why and he said my painting was different from the others.  He especially liked my palm tree!

All in all, it was a great experience.  I am looking forward to doing it again soon.

It doesn't matter how many shows I do, I still get nervous before each of them!

If there's a venue close by that shows art, take the initiative and ask them if you could be their featured artist sometime. This could be a restaurant, clothing store (I had my first solo show in a woman's boutique!), winery, coffee shop, library - sometimes you have to take the initiative vs waiting to be invited.

Yes, Sharon, great ideas.  I am going to start amassing enough paintings for a showing.  There are several places around my way that will gladly have me.  They've hinted in the past but I was not ready.  And it will be a charity fundraiser like you do.

I'll start with the popular landmarks in my area.  People really like what they can identify with.

Thanks, Patricia and Sharon.

Here's a photo of the section with my painting (nene - upper left).

The best part is that I was helping the woman who was setting up and choose the painting under mine to be included in this section which already had the one on the right. She complimented me and said she really likes working with me because I "get it" when it comes to putting the right paintings in the right places.

The reception is Thursday evening - really looking forward to that.  (103 paintings; 53 artists)

I'll remember for the next time, though.  This is quite popular (being the state bird and a very rare one, too) so I will paint more in the future.

I really need to change the title of this topic - this is now my 4th REAL exhibit.

On the exhibit documents, I had written the size of my two watercolors (rooster and palm tree) as 11 x 14. But by the time they are matted and framed, they end up being 16 x 20, just like the oil (Mokoli'i).

So, my question is:  Are the watercolors 11 x 14 (actual size of the painting) or 16 x 20 (size after matting/framing)?  I want to use the correct numbers and not mislead anyone.

Please pardon the amateur layout in front of the sofa.

(Hint to Nolan: when you have a chance, can you please change the title of this topic to "Mea's Art on Display.")

:flowers: :flowers: :flowers: VERY NICE!  You're getting good with roosters in particular!  When we go to Kauai, you can get a lot of rooster photos.  It's their island bird there!

Oh, I think you measure paintings as they are in unframed state, i.e. canvas size or without matting.

I guess there are two things to consider:

Size of the actual painting so the person knows what he is actually getting for his money

Framed size to determine wall space needed for exhibit or hanging in one's house

I hope the people who sail that boat will see your painting.  It is wonderful.

I may be a dreamer... but, wouldn't be great hanging in their cabin, or on display with the tribute of their adventure in a museum somewhere.

Annie,

I gave 100 postcard versions to the crew.  There is no place to hang a painting on an open canoe! There are hundreds of paintings of this vessel so mine is just one of many.

However, the second version of this painting below will be a gift to my good friend who navigated it through Cape Cod waters as depicted here.  This one is totally unique as I am the only artist who did this scene.

Sharon, I value your faith in me.

Completely open canoe!!!  Ole macro, what an adventure this must have been.  I thought it had quarters under....

Okay then, yap I agree, no go for putting a painting on board.

Don't care there are hundreds... because there is only one signed Mea.... hum 'Mal'  :)

Trust your friend will cherish it.

What is that... ever thought we did not have faith in you My Dear Editor  :smitten:

Attended a wonderful artists reception for the Assoc. of Hawaii Artists Contemporary Show. Even though I did not get an award, I was very proud of my Hokule`a painting.

This reception had live music (soft Hawaiian music that did not overpower the conversation); a fabulous array of food; excellent artwork (which the president of the group credited me for doing the spotting during the set up), and a large crowd of art lovers.

I felt really good to be part of such an event.

Post by: mea hamo pena on August 19, 2016, 10:52:57 PM
Thanks, Denise.  Had a great time.

The "spotter" sets up the show.  Decides what painting goes where.  I have been training in past several show and got to work with the president of AHA to set this one up.  She and I agreed on every painting so it went up quickly.  The men do the hanging; we tell them where to put things.

It's fascinating work and I love doing it.

I only had time to enter one painting in the Windward Artists Guild's members only show this month.  My son joined me for the reception.

The painting is my version of the Hawaiian sailing vessel HOKULE`A on its round-the-world journey.  Here it is transiting the Cape Cod Canal in Massachusetts. It's 11 x 14 watercolor on hemp paper.

I felt good that someone wanted to buy it, but it is not for sale as it is for my friend who was onboard to help navigate.

Yes, I really enjoy doing the shows, especially the camaraderie that comes with hanging them and attending the receptions.

Some people balk at paying $30 to enter a show, but I find it a cheap price to pay for a couple of fun times and a free meal at the reception.

Sometimes I wish there was something like that around here.... not many folks coming to the jungle to buy art. I think once we decide on where we'd like to settle it will be easier.

Thanks, Patricia.  I was super proud when the curator singled me out in her opening remarks to say how well I was doing as a spotter in helping to set up the show.  She said I had a great eye for picking what goes well together and that the exhibit set up goes quickly when I help her.

I really enjoy the spotting - such fun to have 60 or more paintings and 3-D art to set into place and have it all look good.

This was a show last evening of miniature paintings (no larger than 12 x 12).  This one is called MARBLE-OUS. I had three others in the exhibit.

MARBLE-OUS was 6 tiny panels painted to look like marble.

That's my son Kent with me.

I also helped with the spotting and hanging of this show - 150 pieces!!

This exhibit is titled, "Across the Board." It's representative samples of the diverse artwork of the board of directors of the Windward Artists Guild on Oahu in Hawaii.  I'm the little white-haired lady with the gold vest.  What good fortune to be a part of this remarkably-talented group of artists. I serve as the board secretary.

Here are my paintings in that exhibit.  The two on the left are oil and the rooster on the right is watercolor.

Thanks, Zayn, Elisabeth, and Kathy S.

Last night we had the annual artists of Honolulu Christmas Party.  My friend and I arranged for an art exchange instead of store bought gifts.  Here's what I gave.

I was also in charge of the fun activities.  I set up team challenges in a way that people could get to know each other better.  I guess it is more of a scavenger hunt, but they never had to leave the table.  Here are the questions in case you ever have to do anything like it.
AHA/WAG CHRISTMAS PARTY 2016        OH, REALLY???                 TEAM # ________
ROUND #1
Question Value:  ONE POINT only per question - as long as there is one person who can positively answer the question.

1.  Is there a WAG or AHA board member at your table?                        ______
2. Does someone have a recent (48 hrs) art Work In Progress on phone or tablet to share now?   ______
3. Does someone show have his/her sketchbook today in this room?                  ______
4. Has someone SOLD an ORIGINAL (not print or giclee) painting in the past week?         ______
5. Has someone BOUGHT an ORIGINAL (not print or giclee) painting in the past week?            ______
6. Does someone have a paint stain on his person or clothes?                     ______
7. Are there two PROFESSIONAL artists from the same family at the table?               ______
8. Is there someone who did NOT buy a pupu from COSTCO for an exhibit reception this year?   ______
9. Is there someone who RENEWED membership to AHA or WAG to come to this party?      ______
10. Is there someone who was in three exhibits this year, either AHA or WAG (or combined)?   ______

TOTAL – ROUND #1                                          ______

AHA/WAG CHRISTMAS PARTY 2016        OH, REALLY???              TEAM # ________
ROUND #2 - Question Value: ONE POINT PER ITEM PRODUCED AT EACH TABLE
11. Has receipt for a recent art purchase? (Double points for email receipt.)         ______

12. Is carrying a valid membership card to any art group or art store in HAWAII?      ______

13. Can show own website to your tablemates on phone or tablet.            ______

TOTAL Round # 2                                       ______

AHA/WAG CHRISTMAS PARTY 2016        OH, REALLY???              TEAM # ________
ROUND #3
Question Value: FIVE POINTS (per person who qualifies at table)
14. Someone who won BEST IN SHOW (or PEOPLES’ CHOICE) in 2016         ______
15. Has more than 200 FACEBOOK FRIENDS.    (Show proof)            ______
16. Can show own painting/artwork as phone display screen               ______

TOTAL Round #3                                    ______

Another activity was the singing of 12 days of Christmas with each team (day) trying to out dramatize each other.  Here's the words I made up for it (tried to make it politically correct and inclusive so called it the 12 days of winter holiday giving:
On the 12th day of GIVING
My true love sent to me:
Twelve WOOD-CARVED DREIDELS, (team that had this one twirled around like dreidels)
Eleven THOUGHTS OF CANDACE, (fabulous artist who passed away this summer)
Ten POTTERS POTTING,
Nine PLEIN AIR EASELS,
Eight UNBIASED JURORS,
Seven PASTEL LANDSCAPES
Six RECEPTION PUPUS, (hors douevres)
FIVE FACEBOOK FRIENDS,
Four ACRYLLIC PALETTES,
Three BEST OF SHOWS,
Two STRANGE COMMISSIONS,
And AN EMAIL MAIL FROM CHIEKO. (art guild secretary who bombards us with emails)

Great party!!

Went to another artists reception tonight.  Being that this is the Chinese Year of the Rooster, I felt that this was appropriate for the exhibit.  This is this rooster's third exhibit, so it should look quite familiar by now.

The second photo is of the three paintings that I will enter tomorrow for an exhibit at the Honolulu Country Club.

The first on left is a line and watercolor wash on hemp paper.  Middle one is strictly WC on hemp.  Last one is a made-up scene titled  "Mahogany Moonlight."  Watercolor on WC block of paper.  (I loved using the blocks.)

By the way, the lighting in the gallery made my hair blonde - it's still white - really.

The curator of the show asked us to say a few words when she introduced us.  She specifically asked me to talk about the line and wash I had done of Makapu`u Lighthouse (which was hanging on a different wall).  I also got lots of compliments on Mahogany Moonlight, shown here.

Nice night.  Several people sought me out to compliment me on my new function as "communicator" for the Association of Hawaii Artists.  I send emails out to the membership (172), informing them of events involving our members. Guess I am doing a good job.

Mea of course you are doing a fantastic job as communicator, they couldn't have wished for a better person.

Thanks, Val, Brian, Mary Lou, and Patricia.

Yes, "embracing" seems to be an appropriate word.  I love meeting people.  Artists, for the most part, are friendly and fascinating.

Having Denise there made it seem like all of you were there, too.  We talked about all the great things about PB.

Thanks, dear art friends, for the compliments.  The dress was a real bargain - less than $13 at Ross with my senior citizen discount.  Hmmm. those cut out shoulders were probably a bit too much for an old lady, but I felt quite nice wearing it.

Liz, the first painting was on a different wall - it was the Little Green Apples orchids.

Good news.  Just got juried into the Aloha Show from May 22 to June  15.   It's held in the courtyard at Honolulu Hale (City Hall).  Hundreds of people walk through that courtyard everyday so it has wide exposure.  My painting there last year ended up on the walls of the Chairman of the City Council.

The two that were accepted were Mahogany Moonlight (watercolor) and Lady Rothschild Orchid (in gouache). Both are 11 x 14".

Thanks, Win and Sharon.

Glad I got that acceptance because I got unaccepted at the Hawaii Watercolor Society show.  I think they did not like that I submitted a gouache painting - the one of the kolea, golden plover.

Instead, my friend asked to display it in his restaurant which will easily be seen by more than 100 people a day.

So, I am feeling better about the rejection.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Mea. It is disappointing but perhaps that Kolea is in the best place it could be. Having your art displayed in a popular restaurant could lead to many new and exciting opportunities.
Title: Re: Mea's Art on Display

if it was rejected solely because it was gouache..... how pernickety! However I suppose every group has it's guidelines... they just don't sound like the kind of group that benefit many artists who value freedom to create. I sure the restaurant will be a better venue. :gl:

Oh Mea, I'm sorry about the rejection - I know from experience how that can sting. But WOW - I think it's even better that you'll be exhibited in a restaurant seen by 100 people daily!!! Maybe you can have a little reception there? And yes, it's good to still go to the show - it will give you a good idea of what they look for in artwork when you reapply next year!

If you recall, last summer I had the pleasure of meeting up with the Hawaiian voyaging canoe Hokule`a on Cape Cod.  Its three-year voyage ends on June 17.  To celebrate its return, I have done two paintings.

The first is oil and will be part of a Silent Auction at Ocean Fest tomorrow.  Money raised supports environmental programs for children.

The second is a line and watercolor wash that will be on display and for sale at a local restaurant.  If it sells, I will donate half to the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

Sorry for having been a bit out of touch for the past day or so.

Our Association of Hawaii Artists had a reception last night for our Contemporary Show.  I had two paintings in this display case - Hokule`a at Kahana Bay (left) and Schooling Bannerfish (right)  I did not win any of the awards, but had a thoroughly good time and made some good contacts for future articles for my newspaper column, LONG on ART.  It has now been expanded to include two more huge sections of Oahu, so I will be quite busy.

:heeha: Good to see your smiling face again Josie. Sorry to hear of your husbands illness, but glad he is well now. Be sure and keep looking after yourself, that's the one person we often forget about when looking after others. Keep well and I look forward to seeing you painting once again.  :flowers:

Hi Val.

I just have to get the paints out of the cupbord and set myself up  again. It will happen  soon, in the meantime I enjoy looking at all the beautiful paintings the PB artists are producing and exhibiting.  We are going into Spring now so maybe with the warmer weather I will get keen again..........?

Josie, it is so lovely to see you again and I am so pleased to hear that your husband is now well.  Time to get the paints out of the cupboard and to enjoy some "me" time.  Looking forward to seeing some of your work when you get down to it.

I'm back and already into action.

Have an art reception tomorrow for our Windward Artists Guild exhibit.

I wrote about it in my newspaper column.  Page four of this link.

Windward Artists Guild reception was a fun event last night. Proud to be photographed with one of my favorite painters, Frances Wong. My "Major Mynah" painting is to my left and Frances' "The Wise One" is to her right (above). I worked in oil with a palette knife (first time!) and Frances did watercolor on tissue paper!  She is such an inspiration to me.  I am going to try her tissue paper technique.

Wonderful Mea to see your painting in such great company.  O0   I've heard of painting on tissue paper but have never tried it. The idea fascinates me though.

Zilpa,

We understand that you have lots of responsibilities with your business and cannot hang out here as often as we'd like.  We are just so happy when you pop in to give us up dates and share your work and success.

You, my dear, are the true inspiration -  a role model for me.

Another Artists Reception.  This is the New Year Invitational - by invitation, then juried entries.  Same "Major Mynah" that was in a show a few months ago.  I had nothing new that fit the theme.  Did get compliments on my first attempt at painting with a palette knife.

Thanks, Pinuccia and Bill.  I love going to art receptions. I meet the nicest people and get to interact with other artists and art patrons.  It's a real morale booster to be in such a positive environment.  Plus I get the opportunity to get dressed up.

Thanks, Dennis.  I had a watercolor in the show, too.  A rooster.  But people were standing around it when I wanted to take a picture so we did the bird photo instead.

It was in a weathered barn board frame - looked pretty good.

Mea... tissue paper would be great in your wrinkled paper technique too. You would probably also find "rice" paper (goes under various names... washi/ kozo/etc) really interesting to paint on too. It's used by Chinese and Japanese  ink and sumi-e painters and can be purchased in most areas with a strong Chinese population. These days even most  ordinary Australian art stores carry it, so I imagine it would be easy to find in Hawaii. And by the way.... well done!

Oh, dear.  Someone gave me a bunch of rice paper and I gave it away because I did not think I'd use it.

So much for trying to not be a pack rat!

Thanks for the suggestion, though, Linley.

Isn't is always the way... you stop hoarding paper/ bottles/ plastic tubs and you either bin them or give them away and within 5 minutes you NEED them yourself. :2funny: :2funny: Never mind, I'm sure more will come your way....

Another month; another exhibit and artist's reception.

This was a plein air group called Windward Wanderers.  I'd love to "wander" with them more often.  I just had the one painting that is next to me in the show.  It's just the side of the building/distant mountains but it was my first plein air experience with the group.

Thanks, Terri.   No congratulations needed on this one.  All I had to do is show up with a painting I did as part of the Windward Wanderers plein air outing, pay the entry fee, and I was in!  No jurors or prizes. Plus they had good food at the reception.

Thanks, Val.  It was windy the day I did it.  Hard to work in the wind.
