Title: New Website
Post by: Annie. on August 21, 2015, 08:23:37 PM
Congratulations Dennis and Nolan!    :twothumbs:

I am sure members will have questions... Here is a start:

1) I only see monthly VIP membership?  Will the annual one disappear after our current one expired?

2) Will all the courses currently available be added to the new website under courses?  For e.g. Let's us draw, Advanced Watercolor, Landscape, etc.

3) Are all the lessons on the new site already?

4) Is this correct:  We will follow the lessons on the new site, but will still post our painting in this current Forum for C&C?

5) The new website is definitively less cluttered, but for those familiar with this old one, what is the advance of migrating to the new one?

Post by: nolan on August 22, 2015, 12:37:56 AM
 :thankyou: Annie

1) The new site only has a monthly option yes - you and other yearly VIP members will be contacted in the week to move over to the new site - just giving myself a chance to sort any bug that might occur with the new site

2) Yes all courses will eventually drip to members - one of the added benefits of moving over

3) All the classes are already loaded yes, I am however still busy loading the courses

4) On the new site each class has it's own area on the class page where you can post your artwork from the class and ask questions, etc. and is extremely easy to use

5) The big advantages are: the new site is mobile friendly so works great on all devices. The system itself is a lot easier to use and makes more sense. Then we have added in ebooks and courses as well as bi-weekly live classes as added benefits to increase the value for money

Hope that answers the questions. If you have any more, please ask O0

Wonderful, looking forward to the migration.  No obvious bugs on the preview, will test more when fully live.

I absolutely love the classification of each classes as: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.  Notice the classes appear to be listed as older at the bottom, newer at the top... so I will be able to continue working my way up... figuratively and physically  :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:

Thank you Nolan  :thankyou:

P.S. Abstract Landscape (the city one) is listed under landscapes but not abstract  :)

Great work, guys.

The resuming of live classes periodically will be great fun.  I think it is something we thoroughly enjoyed, but understand why you needed to stop them to work on the new site.

Hope you can get back to a more normal life and some painting time for yourself now that the hardest part of the switch is done.

Thank you for continuing to make Paintbasket such a wonderful HOME for artists.

I too am excited about the new website and honored that you chose my before and after roses as examples of how someone can improve dramatically (and may I emphasize DRAMATICALLY!) in a short period of time due to the lessons and teachers in this life changing program! Sounds like I should hold off joining until we current VIP members hear from you, Nolan...
Title: Re: New Website

So this sounds like a formal segregation from the VIP members from those interested in just one or two mediums. We will miss your input. :-\

I did it!! I took the plunge, cancelled my PB membership (a little teary eyed at that) and am now a VIP at onlineart!
Title: Re: New Website
Post by: nolan on August 22, 2015, 03:15:11 PM
the new site is only at Phase 1, once the dust clears and the teething problems have been sorted, I will move on to phase 2 of the site. The first of these is to get an even better forum system going. O0

I think commenting on a specific class and uploading your artwork is now infinitely easier on the new site. It just still needs the smileys and the forum part where we can check all chats in one place and send PM messages. Won't take me too long to get that set up O0

Barry, the intention is not to segregate, but to simplify. With all the different clubs, classes and courses etc. our system just became so complicated. We hope that our members will see that although the VIP is a little more expensive, the value they get is ten fold more.

Sharon,

I did,  too.  But, we can still pop in on this forum, too, can't we?  A day without Sharon would be a day without sunshine.

I sure hope we can do both.  That's what I was planning to do.  I cannot imagine a day without checking the 100 most recent posts.

Dear Annie;

I think the new site will give users broader access from more
devices.  (tablets, phones, ect.)

I think you will need to sign up as a new member as it is a new site.

I'll see you over on the new site in a few days!!!!!!

Hi Annie

May Lynn is correct you need to sign on as a new member in other words join the site. I just used my same user name as here  :) (and no fromoto is not my last name but saying I am from Oto which is short for Otorohanga in NZ as a member once asked me, i.e. Lisa from Oto :2funny: :2funny: )

Nolan question I have joined the new website and then cancelled my PB VIP membership (I think) I hit the red button but I can still watch the seascape lesson I was/am doing, which is just as well as the seascape with the rolling wave seems to be the only lesson that doesn't seem loaded on the new website  ;D

From what I understand we can use both sites if we want, we can wait for a while before migrating and if we enjoy the feedback and support from PB members then continue to use PB forum I know I will definitely still be using forum here until everyone can get over there as the each phase happens
Title: Re: New Website

I understand from Nolan we can use both sites and soon there will be a forum on the site. I'm with Mea - a day without PB is never pleasant!
Title: Re: New Website
Post by: nolan on August 22, 2015, 09:10:57 PM
Annie - I will contact all yearly VIP members, like yourself, in the week to migrate you over to the new site - this needs to be done manually

Lisa - Even though you have cancelled your membership on the PB site, it will still be valid until the end of the paying month. eg. if your club payment comes through on the 10th of each month your club access will run until the 10th of the next months. So for a time you may have access to the classes here and on OALessons. When your membership month expires here, you will then only have access on the OALessons site.

The forum on OALessons is members only.

This forum is open to any member. We did look at moving this forum over but the log in systems are different and the logistics just didn't work. This site was put together with an incredible amount of custom programming in order for everything to work together, which meant that eventually to change / improve something was a ton of behind the scenes programming. With the OALessons we didn't want to repeat those mistakes , so we decided to make clean start with the new site. What makes a forum a cool place to visit is the people, with everybody gradually moving over to the new site, you will see that it won't take long for the new forum to be just as much fun, except now everything will work a lot easier  O0

I just joined the new site and now have to cancel my membership here but am hanging on for a few more days before I do that.  I feel a little sad to have to say "good-bye" to our former home which felt so safe. I guess as we age, change is always difficult, no matter how small but as the saying goes, "we have to go with the flow" and no doubt, in the end, we will be happy we did. Wishing Dennis and Nolan the very best with this new venture and to thank them both for always trying to do the best for us all. I am sure I speak for everyone in saying that we love and appreciate you both. Thank you and bless you both.

Patricia you can cancel now already by going to any of the class list pages, eg.
http://www.paintbasket.com/paintbaskettv/?stream=class-list&medium=pencil&subject=animals (http://www.paintbasket.com/paintbaskettv/?stream=class-list&medium=pencil&subject=animals)

scroll to the bottom and click the Cancel button

Your classes here will remain open until your next payment date O0
Title: Re: New Website
Post by: Lisafromoto on August 23, 2015, 04:33:17 PM
Patricia you can still come on forum and post any paintings the cancelling membership only means payment for lessons so until most everyone is over there for forum and everything and the next phase is up and running, I will do lessons through new site but still spend a lot of time on Paint Basket  :)

This is my understanding anyway
Title: Re: New Website
Post by: Happychappy on August 24, 2015, 01:48:15 PM
:thankyou: :thankyou:  Nolan and Lisa for your messages. I stopped payment for my PB membership when I joined the new site and was surprised that I didn't have to cancel my membership here at PB for it was done for me with the payment stoppage.  Paypal however, was not sure how this would affect my membership at PB which still had three cycles (payments) to run but I am sure that that is O.K. as I am really just migrating to the new site. Perhaps you could confirm this Nolan, if it is not covered in the forthcoming new letter to VIP members.

Many thanks,

Patricia
Title: Re: New Website
Post by: nolan on August 24, 2015, 04:37:49 PM
When you cancelled your Paypal subscription, it cancels your membership here too. You will however still have access until the month you have paid for expires. Eg. if your club payment is on the 13th of the month, your access will run to the 13th of the next month. Hope that makes sense
Title: Re: New Website
Post by: May lynn on August 24, 2015, 06:19:58 PM
Dear Nolan;

Are you not still a member of PB even if your club ( or VIP membership) has expired.  And do you not still
have access to classes you have purchased outright over the years?  Do you have the ability to purchase more classes on an individual bases as they come on line?

Regards,

May lynn
Title: Re: New Website
Post by: nolan on August 24, 2015, 07:50:26 PM
May lynn, yes you remain a member here even if you cancel your club. All classes that opened here as part of the club will close again. All classes you purchased outright will always remain open.

To purchase a class individually, you do that here, not on onlineartlessons.com

Well I posted my seascape on the new website and wow! It was so easy to do. Just below the video is a place to show discussions, then you can easily see the add a comment box and then click the add picture button just below which, on my iPad, took me straight to my photo albums and I clicked the one I wanted to add and done!!

Easy! Easy! Easy!!!   :yippee:

Nolan, do you plan to eventually close down this Paint Basket website, or will it still remain open for encourager posts and other general posts about our medium, etc.?
Title: Re: New Website
Post by: nolan on August 25, 2015, 01:04:30 PM
this website will remain here. Paint Basket  = buy a class, Online Art Lessons = Join the club

As far as discussions are concerned, I would prefer to have the discussions move to the new site for a practical reason. There I can offload the images uploaded to each post onto cloud based storage so we don't run into problems like we do here, where every now and again the server runs out of space, bombs out the site and then we have to upgrade the hosting.

I am working on getting the avatar working, Lisa has a Gravatar  (https://en.gravatar.com/)set up. Our new system will outamatically use your Gravatar if you have one set up.

A Gravatar is a universal avatar, so if you change you Gravatar, then it will update on every site you are on that uses Gravatars O0

It's interesting to read questions at the early stages of a new website development. We can all learn and get answers to questions we may have been pondering.
I've not been on recently (away at a 6 month seasonal pitch caravan as often as possible) and so, I'm just starting to catch up.
I've taken a peak at the new site. I liked it apart from the 'join' page (something about it I didn't like, sorry).
The concept seems really good and, being able to access from phones, laptops, PCs etc is a big bonus. The cost is very good for those wanting access to a variety of classes rather than buy individual access to each one at $14

I look forward to seeing the site grow and develop.
Well done Nolan

This site (PB) and Online Art Lessons (OAL) are two separate websites so don't affect each other in any way.

On PB you purchase the classes
OAL you join a club to access the classes

So if you have bought a class from us in the past, you will access it here using your PB login info.

If you belong to the club at OAL you will view your classes via your OAL login on the OAL website.

You cannot login to PB with your OAL info, or the other way around.

Nolan, is the following intentional?

In oil classes, the 5 intro classes on Landscape are not labelled as beginner, intermediate, or advanced.  So cannot be filtered by level, and they don't show up if the level filter is used.  They do show up in the 'recommended order' tab.

The new site is super well organized.  I appreciate that there will be a place for members to chat away from the eyes of the whole World.  O0  O0

Mammoth job indeed, Nolan.  I was a sc. programmer in my old life, machine language, Fortran, even C/C+ on DOS... then I dropped out when the Window system arrived.  Took me a while to trust those 'back boxes' where I could not see the prgm myself.  So have a little idea of the task you took on, and you did a very fine job.  I have tried the newsite on an old desktop, laptop, my new annoying Window tablet, and even this Android phone... all shows nicely formatted display.

It will be an incredible ressource when all the PDF and e-books are loaded.

I cought the painting bug!

It has an intro page, and explain the website.  I cannot see it anymore because when I login it goes immediately to the member only webpage.

Let us know if this doesn't work.

I just read through this thread. It is a very interesting discussion about the new launching of the OAL website last August. Wow, there sure is a lot of behind the scenes work that Nolan and Dennis do to make these websites  user friendly for us.  :thankyou: to both of you!

At the beginning of the topic, Nolan said that there would eventually be a forum like we have on PB on OAL. At this time, it appears that we can only post to specific classes and not create new topics (that is why I am posting on this thread). Will the ability to create new topics  be added to the newer website?

Nolan said that he'd like us to start posting our work and questions about our lessons to OAL. From what I see, we are  pretty much doing all of of our posting here. There is not much action or discussion at OAL.  Just wondering if the migration over to OAL is  still the goal.

there will eventually be the ability to create a topic that is not related to the class itself. There is however nothing off the shelf that we can use so we are having the software developed.

You are welcome to post here, but I prefer that if you are an OAL member you post your class artwork under the relevant class page on OAL.

The more we post there, the busier it will become.

I have started posting my oil classes only on OAL since Fall.  I don't duplicate on PB.

I still post non-lesson post on PB.  I just wish I could easily see new posts without having to open each links individually.  But this may come in time!

Just a reminder... I feel a bit lonely on OAL

I agree Annie! I feel lonely on OAL too and would love to see more action there. I have been posting on both because  I really need the feedback I get here at PB.
