Title: Flyer for my next show
Post by: Sacgal/Sharon on June 12, 2015, 08:04:05 PM

For the month of July, I've been asked to exhibit my work at one of the most popular restaurants in Sacramento - the 33rd St Bistro. They're hosting a Second Saturday reception for me and my art on July 11th and have created this flyer to promote the event - which I'm really pleased with! Thought it would be fun to share it with my PB friends.  I'm donating a portion of all sales to a local nonprofit that provides programs and services to children of low income families. If any of you happen to be in Sacramento, come on by!

Thanks everyone for the good wishes! I've had to move my studio to the first floor because of my broken ankle - haven't quite got the flow of how to paint down here yet. Hoping that happens soon since I'd like to finish a few more paintings between now and the show!

Back home after my show tonight - and it was very well attended - about 125 people! Total sales (pre-show plus tonight) were 8 - not bad for a night when most folks were at the state fair or at the big soccer game in town. I'll be making a donation to the nonprofit beneficiary for about $600 as a result of this show - which is the best part!

Just back from a week in Chicago and have been spending this week gearing up for my show tomorrow - see first flyer. This non-profit, My Sister's House, provides a safe haven for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse and/or human trafficking. They were one of my clients from my event planning days - in fact, they were my final client when I did my last event 2 years ago. I'm so honored they've asked me to be the featured artist at their event tomorrow night at a very respected gallery in town. I'm donating 50% of the net proceeds of any art sales. I'll only have about a dozen pieces for sales - mostly items under $200 - although I do have a pre-sale of a giclee print of my Sather Gate painting - so nice to start with a red dot!

On Aug 15th, my husband and i will co-emcee this second event, Uncorked for the Arts, to support Development Disability Service Organization. They provide art programs for people with disabilities - a wonderful organization. In fact, my husband and I and our dog Cabo, did a video for them earlier this year for a contest and it came in first place and they won $750! I'm donating my "SeƱora on the Malecon" painting for their silent auction...

Bottom line - I've been so busy with the preparations for this I've done zero painting - and we're heading back to Chicago on Monday for more training - so hopefully by mid August I'll be picking up the brush again!

Thanks Sally, Mea, Josie and Val - and Sally, I get tired too sometimes with what I'm doing.  The painting is the easy part - it's all of the marketing that's so time consuming! Chicago is a nice distraction - 2 days of training for my husband's business and 5 nights of vacation in Wisconsin where he's originally from. And my mobility boot will be joining us, Val!!

Thanks Danielle! And just back from the show - in 2 hours, 12 paintings sold! I'll be donating approximately $900 to the nonprofit as a result. Plus the local business paper was there taking photos for their next week's issue so there should be nice publicity. It was such a great night!! Now I'm really inspired to pick up that paintbrush again!!

Thank you Natalie and Lisa! It's been nice to open up some wall space in my home with these sales - another benefit of this last show!

And some more great news: On sept 25-26 a local Jesuit private high school is having their annual art sale. They only invite the "who's-who" of artists in the region to display their art...and this year they're inviting me! Each artist can have up to 20 paintings to sell, and we set our own prices, just like at a gallery. I split any sales 50-50 with the school, just like at a gallery. Not only is this a huge honor, the people that attend are quite wealthy and love to buy art ...and we're encouraged to price our art a little higher since everyone knows a huge amount goes to the school. I'm Looking forward to opening up more wall space next month as well as to getting in front of a new audience. I'll post a copy of the promotional postcard when they send it to me.

Next month, I've been invited to participate in the annual Jesuit High School Art Auction, along with many of the who's who of Sacramento Regional artists. It's quite an honor to be a part of this show...still amazed to see my name listed with these other fine artists, many of whom sell their paintings for 1000's of dollars! Here's the postcard for the event...I can bring up to 20 paintings and the sales will be split 50-50 with the high school. I'll let you know how it goes - the sale is Sept 25-26.

What's really cool is on the front of the post card they used my "Beach Chairs" painting!!

The Jesuit Art Event happened this weekend and I learned a lot. There were 30 artists - most of them the most famous artists in the region - and over 400 pieces of art for sale - paintings and sculptures. There was so much art to choose from! I sold two pieces - framed giclee prints of my Sacramento Skyline and Mark Hopkins paintings. With so much art, and a crowd of buyers that was significantly less than in prior years, I was happy to have any sales at all. There were some very established artists that sold only 1 or zero pieces.

In prior years, the school made $150,000 from this event. This year they made $73,000 - which is still quite impressive. Most attendees were drawn to paintings of landscapes...so I'll need to create some of those if I'm invited back next year.  And I saw very clearly that the other artists had definitive styles - it was easy to see whose paintings were whose. Mine were all over the place from a style perspective - I think I was the only one without a definitive voice! But I'm still so honored that I was included in the line up of artists and glad that My art sales donated $390 to the school.

It is a quandry, but don't waste too much time worrying over it.

Different people like different things.

When I do the classes, I always take a book containing paintings, drawings etc. that I have done. It's interesting to see that some love the loose to  semi abstract style, some like the more 'contained' style, and some like the more realistic style.
The same applies to the subject matter. It's fine to paint the subject of what sells best in the area you are in, but also important to include a couple of the subjects that make your artistic heart sing. Dare to stand out, it's ok   :goofy:

Final word...... PAINT.  :stress:

Thanks Lisa, Nolan and Val...

Lisa - you do make me laugh!! And Val - no fears, I definitely won't worry about it - as I said, it was a very educational opportunity and I'm thrilled with my sales.

It was fun to use the show to research this concept of "voice" we've been discussing - and honestly, some of the voices I saw are not ones that would fit me (i.e.: abstracts).  So my research continues as I continue to paint, paint, paint!

Thought I'd share the flyer for my next show, which is November 16. I've asked my photographer friend to join me - there's a lot of space to fill on the walls so it's nice to have some help in that regard. Plus he'll bring on a lot of additional attendees. And he works for the major business magazine in town which means we'll most likely get some press afterwards!

Good news - I've already sold the first painting on the flyer - S'fat, Israel. Still need to finish a few larger pieces between now and then. We'll both be donating 25% of all sales to the nonprofit gallery.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes! The theme, "One More for the Road" will showcase paintings based on places I've visited - similar to my Destinations show earlier this year.

My new show opened up tonight and I sold 7 pieces - and only 1 was to an existing collector! Had about 75 attendees - lots of good people. My photographer friend sold 7 of his pictures too - he was thrilled! The show will be up through January, but for now we'll be donating nearly $900 to the nonprofit. Tomorrow we head up to Tahoe for a couple days of R&R - which I need! Thanks so much for the good wishes - it helped so much knowing you were cheering for me!

Mazel tov!

It is so nice to hear of your successes.  Your paintings are so nice that I am not surprised.   Still you were able to make them visible in the correct places, something artists appear to struggle with.

FABULOUS, Sharon.  Great poster.  So attractive.

The SMALL idea is a really big one!  We found that with my husband's woodturnings, small sells better than big, especially if it's to a tourist.  Easy to pack or ship home.

Best wishes for a great show.  I'm sure you will do well.

:thankyou: Mea! My goal is to have about 20-30 pieces - some new, some from previous shows. Keeping both the size and the prices on the lower side...Next step is to find frames and mats for everything that don't cost too much (not going with custom made frames for these sizes.)  Nice to know your husband figured this out too!

Sharon,
Been thinking about your earlier comment about "your style" and about comments from Nolan in the business classes.  Also, we all recognize your paintings when you put them on the forum, so you do have your own style.  I think what you are seeing is that you are not limited to one subject.

When one walks from boot to boot loaded with painting... one would marely spend a few seconds and get a gelstad of,  for example, landscape paintings.  Either nothing catch the eyes because you see all the paintings in one sight, or you love them all and start really looking and comparing.  On the other hand, if all the paintings are different subjects, you are more likely to spend one or two seconds on each one to find what you like... and I think more likely to find something you like.

This was my observation from a little experiment I conducted with a friend last Fall.  I freely walk in a fairly large exhibit and she followed me with a chronograph (the experiment was held twice by currious who wanted to know what she was timing).  She recorded type of display in one word (she had table with landscape, flowers, abstract, etc.), my comment (like, don't) , and time spent at the booth.  She could barely keep up as I was moving much faster then we had both expected.

To be scientific, we would need to repeat this with many people of various background.  But based on the above I would venture to say that your exhibits with various sujects/styles may be more eye-catching then a single subject/style.

When I look at one of your series, like your small paintings, I always spot one that I would really like to have.  Same with your previous series.  I think it is because I compare different things.  For example,  if they were all umbreallas, I don't know if I would find your umbrella painting as attractive.  I find the same with other established PB artists.

Does this make sense to you... or only to me?

I am trying to find a term to describe your "all over the place  style", must be a new art movement.  I beleive your small paintings will be a success.  But for good measure I wish you  :gl:

You are such a dear friend, Annie! Thank you for what you wrote. I'm actually now at peace with my style - which is I'm just going to paint what makes me happy! So be it if I never have a gallery represent me. So be it if art critics aren't very complementary. I paint because it gives me joy. And if someone wants to purchase a painting then I'm beyond thrilled since I now it will bring them joy, too.

I agree - a bunch of umbrella paintings would be dull - I much prefer variety - the paintings and with life!

Big hugs!!

I'm very much schooled, Val, thanks to the wonderful school of paint basket! Other artists may brag they trained in Florence or New York,  but I'm quite honored to have trained online with Dennis and the PB gang!!! And my sales numbers are better than most of them too!! But that's why I continue to donate to nonprofits. So far my art has allowed me to contribute over $16,000 to nonprofits in 2.5 years. Nothing makes me prouder!

I've just read the most recent comments on this subject - recent being since March. My apologies for not having responded - these words are so inspiring to me right now. And Dennis - I love your quote - it really touches my heart. My next show, Aug 24th, will benefit a nonprofit called My Sister's House. They provide a safe haven for Asian women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. Last year at their show, 12 paintings sold and I was able to donate nearly $1200 to them. I'm hoping the same will happen this month - although I won't be there in person (they'll have a gung-ho person on their board to be my sales person.) Again, I'll be donating 50% of the net proceeds to the nonprofit...keep those fingers crossed!

Just read through all these messages which I missed. Bless your kind heart Sharon for donating to those who will have hope when there seemed to be no hope and as Dennis' quoted Scripture states clearly, give and you will receive.

Last night the non profit, My Sisters House, held their annual art event - even though I wasn't able to be there, I had 20 paintings displayed. I learned today that 5 sold! As a result, I'll be donating $430 to their effort to provide Asian women and children who are victims of domestic abuse a safe haven.
