Title: Fi's Pastel Paintings
Post by: Fiona on May 17, 2015, 01:45:24 PM
Hello my lovely PB friends  :)

Just thought I'd ask for some encouragement on this WIP - it's from a photo on Facebook, on the whole I'm pleased with it but think it needs a little something .... not sure what though. So I thought I would ask and get a general consensus.

Cheers

Golly, Fiona, this is gorgeous.  Incredible sky!

I'm sure the photo does not do it justice.

All I can suggest (and it may be wrong) would be to darken the tree trunks on the right as the bright sun is behind them.

Lovely painting Fiona,  Mea has a point, darken the trunks of the trees.  I also have a suggestion the cloud in front of the sun, I am not sure but maybe it should be darker as the sun is shining on it.  Also the clouds at the very top maybe soften them, it looks too much like 2 inverted c .

  Beautiful, Fiona, such a lovely warm glow of the rising (?) sun! I agree with the comments about darkening the tree trunks and tweaking the clouds a smidge.  My comment would be that you might think about adding a birdie or two and that's it!  O0

Thank you ladies for the helpful suggestions :)  I have tweaked the clouds at the top a little bit and darkened the one above the sun, the tree trunks are now in silhouette as they should be.

I would show you an updated picture, but a friend popped in for a cuppa and whisked it off to see if it will go in her husbands' new office which had just been re-decorated. It reminded her of a holiday they had in America a few years ago and she wanted it as a reminder of that. Seems I can hardly finish a painting before someone buys it "hot off the press" so to speak. Not that I'm complaining at all mind you.

Hopefully if the decide to buy this one it will lead to some more commissions as John runs a busy consultation business and has recently moved into larger premises hence the need for artwork on the walls!   :D

I will try and snatch it back long enough to take a photo of the finished article!

Cheers

Thanks everyone for the encouragement - it is really appreciated  :)

On a funny note, I did receive in the post this morning a cheque for the painting which is now hanging in John's office for twice what I was going to ask!  So it looks like I will have to visit his office if I'm ever going to get that updated pic!!

Thank you everyone - I will be stealing into John's office soon to take a photo of the framed piece :)

I have been busy with this one in the meantime - it's based on a photo by Danny Brannigan of Wastwater in Cumbria.   The referencw photo is magnificent and I'm not sure I have done it justice. Having said that I am a little bit pleased with this one - my family originally come from this area and I've traipsed round here many times in my youth  :)

As  always crits, comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

:thankyou: Everyone for your encouragement and support. I really appreciate it.

I'm trying to create a good enough portfolio to take round to a few galleries round here and see it they will be willing to support a new artist. I also have a back-up plan which involves a few friends who are artists as well - too many irons in the fire at the moment!  All part of my "5 year plan" the main aim of which is to be able to give up this working for a living lark and become a full time artist  :)

Title: Re: Fi's Pastel Paintings
Post by: Fiona on June 14, 2015, 02:50:08 PM
Thank you Jay and Dennis  :)

I have just been commissioned to do a painting based on the theme of Noah's Ark by a lady who wants something original for her son's bedroom - his mane being Noah of course!  And to complicate things a little bit more, Noah will be 2 in a few months and Hannah wants me to paint something he can "Grow into" - so nothing cartoon like or too childish. I will be sticking to my favourite medium of pastels for this one too  :)

This is my preliminary sketch to work out the composition of the elements I want to add. The mountains in the background are loosely based on Mount Ararat in Turkey, and I rather liked the idea of the animals following a winding path to board the ark.

Any further suggestions, comments and crits are very welcome  :)

Thanking you all in advance - I know you will all come up with some great suggestions.

Cheers

Fi, this is going to be so good. I love your sketch of all the animals walking towards the Ark. Noah will love it as he grows and hears the story of his namesake saving two of every species of animal.  Great job.  Patricia

Thank you Sherri, Patricia and Sharon for your encouragement, it's greatly appreciated. I showed Noah's Mum the preliminary sketch and she was over the moon with my rendition of the story - which is always a good start with a commission painting  :) So I have ploughed on and completed the underpainting, still lots of details to add, but I am quite happy with the progress so far.

As always crits, comments suggestions etc are gratefully received.

Thank you Danielle and Dan  :)  :)

Well here is the next stage of this painting. Most of the detail is there, just need to tweak the halo round the mountain, add a few more shadows to the bottom of the Ark, lob in a few animals and it should be finished  :)

This is progressing fabulously! I think a darker shadow under the boat would help bring some dimension to the painting...and there's a white area in front of the mountain, between the boat and the trees that seems like a phantom mountain - may need some detail on that. I can't wait to see those animals!
Title: Re: Fi's Pastel Paintings

Fiona this is comming along well.   My only suggestion is to receed the Trees on the right they apear to small for the arch, but maybe it is just some small trees.

This looks fantastic, Fiona! I'm still struggling with the hill in the front - it really should be darker than the ones in the back...can you add a bit more color to that? Love the impression of the animals...and the two cats up front are a brilliant addition!

Fi, I like this very much, indeed.   :smitten:   Those mountains are so captivating, and the animals are great--love the cats in the foreground. Just a couple of small things that come to mind.

(1) With the storm/flood approaching, might the sky be stormy and menacing?

(2) The front of the ark somehow seems two-dimensional. Would some light and shadow on that part make it seem more 3-dimensional?

Title: Re: Fi's Pastel Paintings
Post by: dennis on June 19, 2015, 01:42:41 PM
From the shadows this is a back lit ship/boat so there would be no lighting there. To brighten up the boat just lighten up the roof area and this will make a difference.
Title: Re: Fi's Pastel Paintings
Post by: Fiona on June 19, 2015, 03:18:02 PM
Thank you once again my lovely PB friends for the kind comments and suggestions, always appreciated  :)

I have added a little more colour to the middle mountain and a bit more texture as well, added some highlights to the ark, and added a bit more shadow to the trees and bushes. The reason I didn't want to add the dark clouds to the sky is because it's going into a 2 year old's bedroom and I wanted to keep it a bit more bright and a little less depressing - so I'll say it's "The calm before the Storm"  :)

Thank you all again for your help and comments - it's made this a much better painting. As always crits, comments suggestions etc are gratefully received.

Cheers

Thank you all for your suggestions :)  I have added a tiny highlight into the eye - it's not very noticeable as an elephant has tiny eyes and is mostly covered by very long eyelashes.

And staying with an African wildlife theme, I have painted this lion today - quite pleased with him as well. Ignore the weird hairdo to the right .... I am going to cover that with the mat  :)

This one is a bit of a diversion for me - something out of my comfort zone :)  Not only that but I did it on some velour paper I bought to try out after an artist friend waxed lyrical about it.

"It's great, you'll love it" He said
"Super, I'll give it a go" I said ...... (How difficult can it be I thought)  :banghead:  :stress:

Well, what can I say, it is certainly different to my normal brand of pastel paper. Blending was a challenge, once the pastel is on the paper it's an immovable object ...  Having said that it does take layer after layer after layer ad nauseam and without going muddy so that's a bonus. I will keep playing around with it though as I think it will work wonderfully for animals with the soft and fluffy texture (and I have a whole lot of it now too)  ;)

As always comments, crits and suggestions are more than welcome.

Cheers

I like the softness of this painting, Fiona, especially the way the hair blends into the coat. Good for you, for stepping outside your comfort zone. Doing so keeps our minds nimble, doesn't it?

Fi,

Good for you, girl.  This is marvelous.  The violin looks 3-Dimensional, really stand out from the body.  Love the background and the softness of his face.  Love the way you got the rounded look to the sunglasses.

Looks like you stepped out of your comfort zone and stomped all over it!!

Fi - you should step  out of your comfort zone more often - this is terrific! He looks like Johnny Depp! I love the colors you've chosen for the background and his outfit...my only suggestion is a bit darker coloring in the hands to give a bit more definition and to show the shadows/creases better. Bravo!!

Thank you BeaSue, Patricia, Mea, Sharon, Val, Natalie, Zilpa, Dennis and Steven for taking the time to post on this one, I really appreciate it.

I have done a few more tweaks to him, thanks Sharon, good call, and I'm happier with the result  :)

With regards to working with the velour paper, I found it easier to start off with harder pastels for the main body and work towards softer ones for the finer details. I would imagine that this paper would be fantastic for animals  as it gives a nice soft finish to the final painting.

As always comments, crits and suggestions are more than welcome.

Thank you ladies  :)    Really appreciate you all looking.

This is my next project - a friend has commissioned it for her sister's birthday, which is just around the corner. The photo is if T's husband and son looking over a lake near where I live. I did originally have the father in the bandy legged stance in the photo, but it looked like he's done something unpleasant in the trouser department - hence the more upright position.

Fi--A very pretty pastel and good for you for this commission.  I have a suggestion.  The man's proportions seem off.  Measure the man in your photo and do a comparative measurement to see how many headlengths long he is.  The typical man is 7 to 7 and a half headlengths.  Your painting makes him a bit too squat, and more older brother like.  Also look at the waist width and try to match it a bit more with the photo to give a more masculine presence.  Hope this helps. Love your trees and water reflections!

:2funny: lol Mea - you do make me giggle, thank you and everyone else for your encouragement, it is really appreciated.

In an attempt to "loosen up" a little and to stop faffing about so much I have tried something a bit different. I set an alarm and gave myself 2 hours to complete the following work, what a lot of fun!!  It made me realise just how much time I spent fiddling with certain aspects of a painting. Having the clock counting down made me work faster and just accept where the mistakes are - and not bother about them unless they were to the detriment of the final piece.

Overall I am quite happy with this one, I signed it and took it off the easel before I wandered down the "Fiddling Path" again.

Any comments, crits, suggestions etc are most welcome.

First things first - Happy New Year to you all   :D  I hope you all had a restive and peaceful season.

Now that the festive season is behind me and I can return to some form of normalcy (not easy when you are barking mad like I am!), I thought I'd kick off this year with a tonal sketch of some garlic. I did get a bit carries away and added a bit of green and red to it to give it a bit more colour. There are only 4 pastels used on this one, black, white, carmine and green. Amazing what you can do with a few colours  :)

Any comments, crits, suggestions etc are most welcome.

Oh, Fiona, I think this is one of the best garlic paintings I have ever seen, especially to two separate cloves.  Wonderfully textured.

The only part that seems off is the brightest white on the left single clove is next to the shadow on the table.  Shouldn't that be the darkest part?

I really love this and you have inspired me to use garlic as the theme for my daily sketch today.

A peaceful and restful year to you, too.

Here is my latest offering, loosely titled Spring Walk (until I can think of something more interesting) I have a local gallery nearby who have shown an interest in exhibiting some of my work for an upcoming exhibition, which is excellent news on one front but completely terrifying on the other!

I'm not too sure of something in this one although I can't exactly put my finger on it. It's like I suddenly developed a different style half way through and couldn't settle on one or the other!

Hopefully this is just my "Artistic Talent" developing and becoming more individual or something.

it's a lovely painting Fiona, but to me the path seems to lead right off the painting.. that is where my eye goes.. there doesn't seem to be a main focus.. also the rocks in the path seem to stop forward movement into the painting... but.. let Dennis have the correct word.. :)

Almost forgot to say, that is so awesome about the gallery.. and so well deserved!!

came back to take another look, I think it's the two large rocks that are creating the problem, maybe take those two out???   leave the small one in front and the others..

 :thankyou: Lin,

I see what you mean about the path leading out of the painting, such a basic compositional mistake to make as well  :)  I agree with you about the lack of focal point, the eye has nowhere to rest and moves all over the painting. I will have a go at sorting those 2 problems out.

As for the rocks ..... they seem rather large for a path, more like bollards than rocks  :2funny: I will have a go at removing them as well - that's the beauty of pastels, you can play around to a certain degree even when the pastel has been laid down  :)

Will post an updated version once I've had a bit of a fiddle and a tweak ...

Cheers

Fiona, Very nice painting.
Suggestion: Change the rocks in the pathway (they hinder the pedestrians as well as the eye movement in the painting) to a gravel-like surface to give it that country feel. I like the lovely "S-curve of the path as opposed to an absolutely straight path where the eye zips along at full speed.
The eye is not lead out of the picture as the tree blocks it very nicely. It just needs a focal point here. The eye has to be lead to something, such a person, a dog, a group of bright flowers, etc.

Thank you everyone for your constructive suggestions  :)  Always happier when my PB friends have a look and suggest tweaks that I may not have thought about.

I have removed the rocks (aka the Assault Course) that stopped movement through the scene, added a couple strolling on the sunshine and pushed the curve of the path a little bit more to suggest more of a lazy "S". I'm still not completely happy with it, not sure what it is that is bothering me ...... I think I'll put this one away and have a look at it in a few months  :)

Fi,

Yes, moving the rocks off the path and adding the strolling couple definitely made the painting better.

If you ever do pick it up again, I would try lightening the back trees and darkening the front trees.  Won't take much but will add to the sense of depth.

I just love that dappled sunlight on the field.

I was just looking again at your Lovely painting Fiona. Although your  apple is lovely and real looking maybe you could make it a bit brighter for it to pop in front of all the other fruits. ( more tonal values).  Also darken the shadow directly under the apple.  Hope you do not mind my saying so.

I'd considered trying them Fi but I read that pastels are easily smudged and that one must be in a well ventilated room . Are they able to be set with a fixative after you are finished with your painting? How big of a room must you be in to do pastels? I draw and paint in my office at home which is the size of a large bedroom.
Title: Re: Fi's Pastel Paintings
Post by: Fiona on April 18, 2016, 01:52:50 PM
Hi Kathy,

Yes soft pastels can be smudged quite easily as they are basically pure pigments held together by a binder, There are measures you can take to minimise the danger of smudging your work though, I always start out in the same fashion, work from top to bottom and then right to left (being left handed), if you are right handed work from left to right. That way you don't run the risk of smudging when you inadvertently swipe your arm across a previously painted part. I also make use of a Mahl stick to keep my arm and hand off the surface of the paper.

With your question on fixatives, there are 2 schools of thought on this, those that use them and those that don't. If you use a good quality product it won't affect the clarity of the colour and will stop some of the dust but not all of it - I only use fixative on a finished painting when I am going to store it for a while before getting it framed - more as a preventative measure than anything else.

With regards to having a well ventilated space, well I think that goes back to when the pastels were made with some of the more dangerous pigments, think the Cadmiums and Cobalts were the main culprits as they are a toxic metals, but nowadays most good quality pastel manufacturers have moved away from the more harmful chemicals.

When I work, I do have the window open for ventilation (I work in an area of my lounge which is about 6 feet square), and clean my hands on a wet-wipe or a damp cloth regularly, and when finished I will wipe down all the surfaces with a damp cloth as well just to pick up any loose dust that may have strayed out of the dust catcher on my easel (same set-up that Dennis uses). Other than that I really don't let it worry me - there are far more toxic things out in the world we walk about in than a little pastel dust - car exhaust fumes, cleaning chemicals, pollutants in the air etc.

So feel free to have a go with pastels, enjoy the creative process of puting pure pigment onto paper and getting delightfully dirty while having fun making great works of art.

Hope this helps and I'm sure that Dennis will be able to give you more information if I've missed anything out.

Cheers
Fi

Well said, Fiona    It's more about not breathing in the pastel dust. The trick is to work carefully and slowly, if need be, to avoid too much dust floating in the air - hence a well ventilated environment. Also use the fixative in a well ventilated area.

Beautifully done Fi  O0

As an aside to the lefties out there, to make it a bit easier to follow along with the lessons, I will turn the painting upside down so that I am working the same part of the picture as the lesson with no fear of smudging. I often do this when working with graphite as well.
It doesn't work for everybody as you must think backwards and upside down!  :D

This one is a bit of a deviation for me as I don't do that many abstract pieces. And this one is in oil pastels, a medium I'm not all that familiar with.

I started this one about 7 years ago after my first stroke as a way to deal with the aftermath of the event and to come to terms with the "New" me. It's a very personal piece and this is the first showing of it, after being laid aside for years as it was really hard to look at without feelings of regret and loss.

However in the last few years I have made huge strides forward and have regained most of what the stroke took from me (Sheer bloody mindedness on my part and an unwillingness to admit defeat), so I hauled this one out of the metaphorical closet and it no longer upsets me. Rather I look at it as a measure of how far I have come since waking up in hospital with only half of my body functioning.

It represents me emerging from the old shell of who I was and facing the storms of uncertainty as a new and unformed being. It's all very symbolic of my journey of discovery and recovery.

As always comments, crits and suggestions are most welcome

Kathy..pastels and w/c are my fav's, but I really love working with the pastels. I have severe COPD and was concerned about the dust, too. I tried the mask, but found it more of a problem with my oxygen tubing, so I just went slowly, put a catch paper under my work, and I haven't had any problems at all. I love working with this medium, and am careful when blending in.  You'll really like it, too. It's so much fun.

And Val - keep at it, pastels are such a versatile medium and should be more mainstream.

Dear fellow PaintBasketeers,

firstly please accept my apologies for not posting much on here in the last few months, but that will change now  :)  I have finished my treatment for Cancer and will hopefully have a lot more energy to devote to art.

Now without further ado, here is my latest offering, it is of a village scene in France. What I liked about it is the interplay of light and dark and how your eye is lead down the path into the picture.

As always comments, crits and suggestions are most welcome

Thank you everyone for the lovely comments  :)  It really means a lot.

I knew there was something missing from this one and a figure or animal in the background is just the thing. I will have a play around and come up with something  :) I'm also toying with the idea of adding a point of interest on that large expanse of blank wall on the right - it looks a bit bare to me - what do my lovely PB pals think??

Thanks for the helpful suggestions :) I have included them in the revised version of this one - window, window box with flowers as well as a figure ..... lots of extra bits added and I worked on the darks a bit more as well as the shadows to give more of a contrast. The photo has come out a little blurred which is annoying, but seeing I took it with a very old camera I'm not too surprised!! My large one has popped it's clogs and gone to the great dark room in the sky so I will need to replace that soon  :)

Oh, wow, Fiona.  You've taken it to a whole new level.

Beautiful - has life and drama now.

Oh, when I said "partial window," I had meant the front wall - a half window going out to the margin.  What you did with the other wall was much better than my suggestion.

Nice!

Thank you all for your lovely words of encouragement  :) I really appreciate the comments and suggestions, it makes for a better painting with a bit of life and focus.

This is my latest one of a kingfisher, done on velour paper which I found to be challenging to say the least! But a bit of experimentation is a good thing!! Still not too sure about the surface as it doesn't blend well and you need to get the effect by layering. It's a long and arduous process!

Hello my lovely fellow Paintbasketeers  :)  It's been a bit of a commission frenzy round mine - I have 3 pet portrait commissions..... lovely to have but can I have them staggered a bit next time!!   :2funny: :2funny: Funnily enough they are all for cats as well.

So here fresh from the framers is number 1 - Ursula. I painted her on velour paper (yes I am a glutton for punishment) which is very nice for portraits as it gives a lovely soft feel to the painting, but it's harder to work with than my usual Canson paper, but I like challenging myself   :2funny:

Good on you for tackling a black cat right off the go! They are tricky at the best of times. Without having seen the ref. , the one thing I see is her left side of head/face seems a bit big. Could be just the perspective of her pose, just thought I'd make mention. Otherwise looking good.  O0

I've heard that the velour paper is more difficult to work with, how is it for making corrections? I've never even seen velour paper, so when I here velour it brings to mind those velvety jumpsuits from the 60's/70's!  :2funny:

Thank you all for your feedback - as always much appreciated  :)

I see what you mean about her face Val, this was unfortunately due to me trying to fix a smudge which went horribly wrong ....  I did show my client the portrait before it went to be framed and she was very happy with it, I have attached the photo she gave me (which is very small and a lot blurred). She asked if I could draw the cat as if it were looking at her .... Clients eh!! Unfortunately this little kitty is no longer with us so I had to improvise a little bit.

Making corrections on velour paper is about as easy as swimming in custard - difficult!! I remember those jumpsuits.... I had a lovely red one .... if you can imagine sticking that fabric onto a paper backing, you have some idea of what velour paper is like ....    :2funny:

Cheers Fi

Here is the second of my cat commissions... I present Figgie :) Again done on velour paper, yes I am a glutton for punishment, but this time to complicate matters further - I painted him on black paper (what was I thinking??) A very valuable lesson learned here - do not use black velour paper to paint a white cat..... there was white dust everywhere!! It also taught me to work very, very carefully and to make constant use of my mahl stick to prevent the pastel dust from spreading like a rash!

Do my lovely Paintbasketeers have any suggestions before I ship this one off to the framers?

Here is another commission piece, a very good friend of mine is turning 40 on Saturday and her husband approached me to do a painting for her, he left everything to me which was rather daunting.... I know she loves owls, so with a few clandestine emails, some oddly timed phone calls and some very suspicious behaviour and skulking about on both our parts, we came up with this one. I hope she can forgive me for the sneaky and odd behaviour over the last week or so...  :2funny:

What a lovely piece.

The only part of the bread that seems a bit off is the lowest end off the cut-off part.  Maybe it just needs to be rounded in a bit more, as it seems to come to a point.

Otherwise, it's totally great as it is.

Thank you all for your encouraging comments, I really do appreciate them  :)

I was out walking this morning and the bluebells were just starting to come through. So I thought I would try and have another timed exercise, this time outside. So I carted my sketchpad and a small selection of pastels and did this little number. I set myself a time limit of an hour to get all the essentials down on paper, with the idea to complete it at home or use it for a reference for a larger painting at a later date.

I went a bit overboard on the bluebells I think..... but the undergrowth was covered in mud and wasn't an appealing colour.

Oh Fi.... you're pushing me over the edge again!   :faint: I've had to lay off the pastels the past few days as it has been so hot we've needed our fans on and hatches all open to catch any breeze!    I did try one day and had to wash my eyes out from the flying dust! Not good. So until the weather breaks....it's watercolour time!!!  :2funny:

I love, love, love this painting!!! Not overboard at all, the colour is gorgeous!   O0   Makes me just want to goo walk in them and...... lay down and roll!!!   :yippee:

Val - I can see the pair of us rolling around in the Bluebells  :2funny: I will admit to taking my shoes and socks off and strolling through them barefoot :)

Kathy - I did most of this outside, just the finishing touches and the figure and his dog (which looks suspiciously like a goat now I look at it!!) were done at home.

Wow great praise, thank you Mea, Emma, Win, Gita and Sharon  :) I really, really, really love pastels  :D

Thank you Win, Val and Dennis  :)  Lovely comments which I truly appreciate.

Onwards and upwards, this one has been done by combining 2 photographs into one composition. Finding 2 pictures with the light source coming from the same side was a challenge - I must have trawled through hundreds of photos  :2funny: Overall I think I spent more time on the searching than on the actual painting!

In general I'm quite pleased with it, but there's something niggling me and I just can't put my finger on it.... will have to put it aside for a few days and look at it later with "fresh" eyes.

Fi, I know what you mean about searching through photos.  Which reminds me, I still have to find one more for the challenges!

I love this scene. I keep getting pulled to the cloud, I love the colourings in it... but it seems to be just stuck there in the sky. Not sure if it's the shape, or perhaps just needs a bit of company
Title: Re: Fi's Pastel Paintings

Thank you Val, I love you!!  :flowers:

That's the problem right there!! The cloud is too separate from the main focus on the painting which is the lighthouse. I think I need to extend the cloud formation to attach it to the main body of the painting. As it stands at the moment it looks like 2 different paintings, so I need to combine them into one.

Will post an updated version as soon as I'm happy with it  :)

Cheers

The lighthouse seems to be overpowered by the cloud.

The rest of the painting is excellent.

You do such incredible pastel work.

Thank you Mea, your comments are always an inspiration  :)

You are correct in saying the lighthouse was being overpowered by the cloud, I have extended the cloud behind and made it lighter in tone and value. I'm a bit happier with it now but still might have another look at it in a few days.

Fi, This is so very pretty and I like the change in the clouds.  I have a tiny observation.  When I first saw it I thought the lighthouse listed slightly to the right but I think it is only because that little cap at the top of it is not in center, if that makes sense.
Title: Re: Fi's Pastel Paintings
Post by: dennis on May 03, 2017, 11:53:33 AM
Fiona, lovely atmosphere here in the painting
The rounding of the cloud and the small bit of blue at the left edge worries me. I would suggest you make the cloud come in from the left as this will form a better unity and push the cloud further into the distance away from the lighthouse. It is already exiting  on the right, which is good O0

Here is my latest offering, a river scene. The colours of the kingfisher have come out quite muted on the photograph, he looks much more vibrant in the flesh. There's still something missing but I'm not sure what. Maybe some swans or some other water bird...

It looks lovely to me.

Maybe that sharp pointed cloud on the left could use a bit of softening.  It grabbed my eye and would not let go.

This is lovely, Fi. I love the colors. You do so well with light and texture in your paintings. My eyes seemed to go everywhere else before noticing the bird though. You said it's much more vibrant in life so that may be why.. I should also mention that I'm viewing it on my iPhone and not a computer.

    Fi, you are doing such wonderful work with your pastels and I agree with EmmaLee, the bird should be lighter in order to easily see it for it is lost in the painting. However, you have created a magnificent painting, it gives me the feeling of peace and calm.  I just love it.

Thank you everyone, I love receiving all the suggestions and crits - it's making me a better artist, so thank you all once again   :flowers: :flowers:

I have had another look at this one after a few days, and I agree with you Mea, that cloud.... like an arrow across the top!!  :2funny:

And I have had another go at that kingfisher! I sprayed the area with a fixative, and went to work with some very sharp pastel pencils. Fixing the base seemed to work and the bird is now much more colourful. I also had another go at the sky, adding and softening, adding and softening. And I reworked the shadows and ripples in the water as well.

Feel much happier about it now, but await your expert eyes to see if there's anything I have missed.

Thank you all  :)  I must apologise for my absence from the forum lately, but life has gotten a bit hectic here with one thing and another.

I have enrolled into an art academy specialising in pastel work. The first few weeks have been dealing with drawing basics and a lot of charcoal work. This one is based on one of the lessons from the course. I mat have a go at it in colour as well  :) All the work done so far has been to train the eye to see the tonal differences in a subject. I am developing a love of charcoal worl  :)

Here is another one of the charcoal studies, the reflectiveness of the kettle was a bit of a challenge as I'd never done anything quite so shiny before. But once you break it down into random shapes with different tonal values it becomes much easier. My putty rubber did some serious overtime on it  :2funny: All drawn freehand, which begs the question of why I can draw perfect spheres but not a straight line....

Me again my lovely peeps  :)  This one is a bit of a puzzler.... It started off life as a sky scape of a sunset over a lake. Then I showed it to my sister via Whatsapp and the picture was sent upside down.... "Great abstract" she said.... "What abstract?" I asked. Then I looked at it and now I'm not sure either  :2funny: :2funny:

I like the reflections in the water of the landscape way up, but I also like the way the eye is lead to the column of "light" in the inverted abstract.... Help!!  Your thoughts please.

      First of all Fi, your charcoal kettle with the reflections is excellent. Reminds me of Dennis' lesson with the copper kettle which was so enjoyable.

Secondly, the pastel painting of the sunset over the lake is so fascinating for it generates a calm feeling on still waters and when turned upside down, shows the exact opposite, turbulent water but also draws your eye into the shaft of light.  Amazing how it can be interpreted like that, two complete opposites of the same painting. Very interesting indeed.

Well, how cool is this?! Both are lovely, Fi. I think my preference is for the abstract with the upward thrust.

I once painted a semi-abstract based on an image from the Hubble space telescope. This was for a small art show at my church. I liked it so much better when I rotated it 90 degrees, and that's how I hung it.

First, the kettle is outstanding. The water reflection is also beautiful. I prefer it to the abstract but that does not mean a lot coming from me, because I am personally not an abstract lover. It comes down to your own taste. The colours and movement are gorgious.
