Thanks so much Natalie, Patricia and Robin.  He is so cute.  Just wanted to do him justice.  I have to frame it and then get it to the owner.

Danielle,

I used water color for the color.  I did not put lots of layers on.  Just enough to get the light coloring I wanted.  Only scratch again if I need to add highlights that I colored.

Sherri he/she is very cute.  I too know naught about scratchboard, so I don't know if things can be fixed that easily.  The one thing I noticed was the nostrals.   The one is lower than the other.  Just compare with the original.

Sherri,
This is wonderful.  The fur is so rich, colors and shades well done.

Not sure about further improvement... I learned that photos are not always a good representation of the original.

Assuming I see the true colors: are the reflection in the eye pure white or stained?  Since the eyes are usually the focal point, I think I would keep them pure white, if they are... perhaps a little bit bigger.  If the tongue is the secondary focal point, then perhaps a little bit warmer color... pink-red (as in the photo, dogs usually have bright and wetter  tongues...).  The tongue somewhat blends into the fur color... well unless this is what you wish to achieve.

The left side of the dog's tongue (right on the painting) is slightly too narrow.  On the photo it aligned with the canine tooth, but on your drawing it is just short of it.

In the neck, there is a sharp dark line,,, just a few very light strokes would break that sharp line while retaining the shadow.

But first, let's hear what other think...

The owner is sure to love it.  You have done wonder

Congratulations.  You've done a great job on the pooch.  I'm sure the owner will be happy with it.  I know nothing of scratchboard, so I don't know how you 'tweak' on it!  LOL
Good job.

Sherri,
You can go back and make corrections on your own posts.  I do that all the time, typos, etc.  Once I even put the wrong smg number and posted someone else painting

Sherri,

Really good job on the doggie.

Yes, I agree with Annie that the tongue would look better more pinkish.  I noticed on the photo that the eyes have some light reflections along the top of the iris.  Jill has a good suggestion on the nostril.

Hope these things are easily fixable because this is one really nice  scratchboard art piece.

Fixed the nose and decided that the tongue needed more accent.  Thanks for all of the comments.  Annie appreciate it.

Thanks

Sherri,
I am surprised at the difference that a more colorful tongue makes.   He is so lovely and seems so alive.

I really hope the owner will be pleased.  It is very nicely done.

p.s. takes any comment I have with a big pinch of salt... you know I am very green at visual art, but I am trying to train my eyes.

Sherri - I was impressed with Dexter before, but now with this frame it's over the top amazing!! I hope you advertise the heck out of what you did - folks will be lining up to have you create similar pictures of their pets!

Thanks Jill and Annie.

Sharon,  I took the picture to the owner at the office I used to work at.  A guy I had worked with for years wants an 18 X 24 scratchboard of his three dogs for his wife's birthday which is in June.  Can't believe it!!  That will be a lot of scratching!!!!!! Word is starting to get around.  So many people like the scratch board!!  Thanks for your encouragement.

Sherri - if you continue to let folks see what you're capable of creating you'll have commissions lined up! Put this on your FB page and let everyone know you're available to create pet portraits. This is such a unique product you offer - and you're so darn good at it!  And don't underprice yourself - 3 dogs is 3x the price, especially at that size!

Sherri - What type of watercolours did you use on the scratch? Paints or pencils? (I am currently scratching a Kookaburra on an 8 1/2" x 12" board and need the browns to be highlighted so figured watercolours would be the best method to colour it but I am looking at pencils - the hand isn't steady enough for paints  :painting: )

I used paints.  I am not sure if pencils would work.  I just bought some ampersand scratchboard inks and used them on my last picture.  I really like them!!

Ahhh hadn't thought of using inks.  Considered watercolour pencils because (in my mind at least) thought I might have more control over where I placed the colour compared to a paint brush.

But the inks - have to give them a try on some scrap and see how they compare - thanks for this tip.

Sharon you are right about triple price. I also told him I wanted to see the picture he wanted before I quoted a price!!  I really appreciate your support
