:hang: Having major problems with my pastel pencils. I thought the paper I had was a light grey....turns out it's more of a brown colour.  Anyway, the colours are all coming out VERY dull and the more I try to brighten them up...the worse it seems to get.  :help:   I guess the limited colours aren't helping either. This is about the best photo I could get, still not very good but would appreciate anyone's thoughts and/or suggestions. Going to make a cup of tea.  :coffee:

So far it looks fine, Val.  Because of the color of the paper, it will bring the whole picture together.  You'll see, once you get your left side done.  It's gonna be ginger peachy!  Boy...it took long enough to transfer the template!!   :2funny:   Twice as long as the fuschia!

I'm excited to start it, too.  Do the wall on the left, and you'll see it will all tie in.   Honest!!    ;D
Try some bright gold for the lighter rocks, and lots of white...then color over the white.  Do you have fixative? That should help, too.

Dear Val;

I watched the class last evening and recall Dennis sprayed the drawing with
an fixative before starting to paint.  I know in past classes he mentioned that
pencil pastels seem to work better after giving the paper a little spray.

It could also be the brand of pastel pencils that are not working for you.
Give the fixative a go before investing  in new pencils.   :gl2:

I hope this helps.

Thanks Mea, I'll be adding more final darks in once the painting is about done. That way I can (hopefully) balance everything out!  ... at least that's the plan!  ::)    ;D

Ta much Bella... I hope you're right      I started the little bit over the door as I knew I had troubles with the pencils before. I'm left handed so I'll actually work from the other side. Sometimes I can work upside down, but I find this one a bit confusing concerning the light, so I'll just work it backwards.  :D   Hey, if it doesn't scare me....where's the challenge?!  :knight:     ;D

I did think of trying that May Lynn, but can't use the spray in the house and it's just too cold and windy to go outside. Have no fear I haven't given up on it, but I did almost pack in the pencils and get the pan pastels. BUT... I reined myself in, gave myself a good talking to  :knuppel2: and shall persevere with the pencils for better or worse!  ???    ;D

   I'm so excited you are working on this one . I think it looks great so far!

I can lift my arm waist high so I am going to try my pastels before the end of the week. I'm on the pansy class so a few lessons behind.  I have to return to work next week which is going to put a damper on my lessons.

I have done so many pencil classes I had to take a break.  Besides I missed the color!!! And Dennis!!!

Robin, I am using the Stabilo Carbothello, they were highly recommended to me. I just find the leads extremely hard. I think if I do purchase any more pastel pencils, I'll try to find something just a bit softer. Any recommendations?  ???

Post by: Val on March 04, 2015, 01:50:50 PM
:o Uh-oh, don't panic Robin! You may find you have better luck with them. I had a very difficult time with them when doing the tiger, so I stopped using them and finished by using just the pan pastels. I am determined to finish this as I love the colours in the rocks and the door. I think once I'm through I may try again using just the pan pastels.

Don't worry Robin, it's going to be fine..... after all, just look at me!  :pullhair:    :goofy:    :2funny:   Dennis...reservation please, rubber room for one!  ;D

I have the Stabilo ones and Derwent. Derwents seem a tad softer with some colors.

Post by: Fiona on March 05, 2015, 03:06:41 AM
I have the Derwent and Faber Castell pastel pencils,  like Natalie I found the Derwent ones are a little softer in some of the colours. Still looking for a soft white one though, so I still use a stick for any whites that are needed. Although to be honest I only use the pencils for the finer finishing details, just more used to having a stick in my hand I guess   :)

Cheers

Thanks Danielle, I'm almost halfway down the right side....whew, not sure if I like it. Really must get some more white pastel paper, I think between the colour of the paper and the difficulties with the pencils is what is putting me off.  :censored:   Anyway, I am determined to finish, so doing it in bits and pieces when not with mum.

   Uh-Oh ..... I killed it. Decided before I went any further I'd try putting the light grey unifying wash over the stones. Now my colours are really dull and muddy looking. I was actually starting to like it.... I'll take a photo tomorrow. I don't think there's much help for it, but you never know.  :-\

Natalie,

So much to like here - wood grain on the door is fabulous.  Stones are so realistic, although they seem to get small really fast in the top right corner.  Is that the way it looks in the reference?  If so, they must have run out of the big stones too soon.

Wish the flowers in front stood out more; they are so pretty.  I'd love to be able to make my rocks look as good as yours.

I really like this one.

 :thankyou: everyone.

Lisa there are a couple of companies that make an acrylic gel/paste with a grit substance. Golden is one (spendy).

I wanted to try sanded papers and boards, but I am far too cheap at this point to lay that kind of money down.
It's best when it is one layer and thin. You can have an under painting or drawing as well. Sometimes you get scratchy looking marks-it's part of the unknown.

Great rocks and weather-beaten door.  Looks like a lot of work went into this one.

Feel good about it!

Val,

Sorry about the arm still bothering you.  Your doorway is coming along well. I would have already made the rocks three times that size so there would be less to do.

Keep at it.  Will be nice when done and probably good therapy for the arm.

Thanks much all        I was up even more than usual last night (very loud electrifying thunderstorm), so spent another few hours working the doorway.  I don't have any grey pencils. it was a challenge mixing greys for the rocks, but I'm finding the larger areas of the door a serious challenge.  Just haven't happened upon the right formula for getting an even balance throughout. First too light, then too dark....    I shall persevere, with a bit of luck and the good Lord willing, shall have a reasonable resemblance by month's end!     :jk:     :2funny:

:D your painting is coming along beautifully, Val. What is it about the door that you struggle with? The outline looks good. I went back and looked at the reference photo and it is a very interesting texture to the old worn wood.

I don't feel qualified to be giving you advice as you have so much more experience than I have. I know nothing about pastels so my only suggestion comes from what I've learned drawing. That would be to just focus on the section you are painting at the time.  :detective: Look for little shapes and match those. I've found that they don't make sense while I'm drawing them. Then when I walk away and comeback, wow!  :heeha: It looks like the reference.

Kathy, I'm just having difficulties to get the greys on the door. I have no grey pencils and the mixes just aren't cutting it for me. I'll keep at it and hopefully hit on it before I wear out the paper!  :crazy2: Who would have thought mixing black and white would cause so much grief?!

Many thanks to all for their unflagging encouragement, it really kept me going when I just wanted to pack it in. I have to say this has been the most difficult lesson for me. Good job, Val.  It's a wonderful picture, and I love the colors. I'm so glad you dug it out....looks super!!
I use the stick pastels when I can't get a pencil the right color. I don't have a large selection of pencils, but I do have some awesome colors in the pastel box. You can kinda rub them to a half decent point for detail work.
Again....Good for you.  Its terrific!

Retta, there were so many times I wanted to just pack it in or switch to the pan pastels like I did with the tiger. But the lesson was pencils and I was determined to see it through.  :crazy2: I think I'll be keeping the pencils for fine detail work should I need it....but not a complete picture!  :faint:    ;D

Hello everyone,

Stones, lots of stones!! Interesting lesson to learn, thanks Dennis. I put a lot of attention on the door and inner shadows. Seems like only Val and I have taken this challenge so far. I recommend this lesson in terms of using the pastels to paint wood and combine colors to define rock walls such as this one. Please comments are very welcome.

Well, pastels just do not seem to be my thing.  I gave this a try and never got to finish.  Too little time...too many rocks.

I did use pastel pencil (Faber-Castell Pitt) and still found it too messy for me.

Here is all I was able to accomplish, although Dennis gave a really good lesson.
