Title: LESSON #3 - Pink Rose
Post by: dennis on November 29, 2014, 01:17:11 AM
In order for me to easily find and answer queries about Lesson #3 I will appreciate it if everyone will keep these to this specific Lesson Posting only. This will also be of benefit to you as well in the future.  Thanks

Helllooo! Anybody out there? I think I hear crickets ...... lol, jk ...

Here is my rose. Loving these classes. I'm truly learning to not rush with these (mostly anyway  ;)) Still having a difficult time with bends and crinkles so I'm glad to have all these flower opportunities to practice them. Thank you Dennis. Welcoming your critique.....

Hope to see more roses added to the bunch!

Gorgeous rose, Denise.  So delicate and life-like.

Hmm..was trying to figure out what to do tomorrow.  Maybe I'll do the rose.  Hope they don't have to be done in a special order because I have not done the foxglove yet.

BEAUTIFUL!

Yea, I didn't do the Foxglove either. I was away when it came out so I'll get back to it later. Didn't want to always feel "one behind"   :P

Go for it tomorrow!

Dear Dennis;

Am I missing something???   I didn't know that
Lesson # 3, the Pink Rose was released.

Is the template available for download and where can
I access the video?

Thanks for your help.

May Lynn You should have received an email to the effect that it has been released. However if you are logged into the site you should find the lesson in the MENU under MY CLASSES  ---> WATERCOLOURS ---> FLOWERS.  The PDF as well as the template will be available there.

The only class I can see or access is the first one--the Fuchsia class. I have not gotten an e-mail about classes 2 or 3 of this course, not do they show up at all in My Classes.  :-\

The Lesson are not released all at once. They are released one a week from the time you bought the Course. That is why some have  while others still have to get theirs.

Dear Dennis;

The Fuchsia and Foxglove classes do show up on my list
but,  "The Rose" doesn't.   I'll check back again later today or
tomorrow.

P.S.   The  Fuchsia is still keeping me busy!!!

This was a great lesson.  Thanks, Dennis.  I think I pressed "Back 30 seconds" about 100 times.

I am pleased with the result on the rose itself, but I had trouble mixing the colors for the leaves.  None of them seemed to be the same color.

I also had trouble trying to hide my tracing lines.  Next time I will use waxed paper to trace so I can place it over the painting to be sure that my lines are in the right place.

I value your thoughts, so please critique.  Oh, the painting was too big for my scanner, so the leaves on the left got partially cut off.

Mea, you have done a beautiful job on the shading of the rose itself
I also like your leaves and they have a certain amount of "shine" on them as well. The leaves are not supposed to be all the same colour. Look at nature and see just how many colours and variations there are in a single tree or bush.  A rose bush is no exception - varies from light green to a very reddish colour! Varied greens take the monotony away. O0

Thanks, everyone.  I really enjoyed this one.

Dennis, I tried using the water brush (Koi - round #2).  I can see that I will need to practice more with it.  Do you plan on making a tutorial for using the watercolor brush?  Or can you recommend one?

For anyone who did not buy the advanced flower course, tell Santa to get it for you.  I will use the paintings from it for gifts.  All my friends want them.

You are getting beter all the time, Mea.   Well done, i too like the shine of the leaves.  The rose is lovely, one thing is the dark line under the petal where white meats dark on the edge. Since the petal curl is white the dark line should be soften as it is the shadow of the bottom petal.   Hope this makes sence to you.

I agree that spot looks odd.  I honestly was afraid to do anything with it because I just did not understand what that bottom petal was trying to do.

Louisa,

I started in oil and much prefer it for the ease of fixing a mistake and the richness of color.  The downside is that it can take months (more for white paint)  to dry before you can put a finish on it.

I use watercolor when I want to have something to give to someone right away.  Watercolor is hard for me to control (Dennis makes it look so easy, though.)

Like anything else, practice, practice, practice and you'll get the hang of it.

From what I have seen so far of your work, you'll be good with any medium.

Thanks Denise, honestly I wanted to skip the foxglove because of the great job you and Mea did on yours.  I seem to have a bit of a heavy hand with color and I like your delicate touch.

Thanks Sharon, I know you will knock this one out of the park as always!

Doina, yes it is frustrating.  Seems I have noticed that anything with some blue in it seems to intensify in photos.  It may just be my imagination.

Eagle-eye Danielle :2funny: :2funny: :2funny: Was wondering when someone would spot the difference
The rose photograph was taken under overcast situation such that the shadows were very subtle and not harsh. The main light was from above and slightly to the right while the strong sunlight on the leaves was from the left. I could not find the rose I wanted and with the light from the left and did not want to confuse you in changing the shadows in the rose during the lesson. Was hoping the strong contrast on the leaves would disguise the soft shadows in the rose.
Kudos for catching me out :2funny: :2funny: :2funny: O0 The others had not noticed it.

As long as you don't overdo the rose shadows I guarantee that the average person will not notice it at all - remember you are now starting to get a trained eye as an artist.
There could just as well have been a white wall nearby on the right side that reflected light onto the rose.

here is my final painting. I have tried to have the light from upper right on the rose and leaves. Somehow the picture came out with more yellow green on the leaves that is in reality. Maybe the light have altered the color. Please, does anyone have any comments for improvements before I frame it? I am sure will go on display here in the community art center. Thank you

As each rose went up, I thought mine was not as good.  Then I went back today and looked again - hey, mine is darn good!

I think it's the way Dennis (or Nolan) teaches the lesson.  In my opinion, if you are not a natural-born artist, all you need to do is follow the directions and you can produce decent art.

Steven - ditch the pastels and give this a try!!  And Val - what a lovely thing to write - roses are special in our family so maybe I did paint this with a bit more love...

Awsome in that frame Doina, great mat colour choice.

Here is my rose.  Please be very critical as I want it to look real.  I like my leaves but my rose seem to be missing some punch.

  :help:
Dennis I tried to do all the highlight with the light coming from the left, please let me Know if I succeded in doing so,  and what I can do to improve on the flower itself.

Post by: dennis on January 22, 2015, 02:30:36 PM
Danielle, your painting as such is top class and nothing wrong with the techniques. Your leaves are excellent
Why you think your rose is lacking punch is because you have used another red which seems biased towards the blue - Alizarin Crimson or similar perhaps?
If use magenta or similar then you will get the very pink. It only looks dull because you are comparing the two different reds against each other.
Title: Re: LESSON #3 - Pink Rose
Post by: Danielle123 on January 22, 2015, 02:38:57 PM
:thankyou: Dennis  for the info.  The pink I used is alizarine, I do have different pinks and redish but I was not sure they would be good  and I am used to the alizarine.   Time to learn more from my other colours.

It was an other interesting class Dennis  :smitten: :1hug:   ?   Do the purist use the white pencil in their paintings?

Fiona

Your rose is lovely - delicate petals.  Leaves are beautifully done.

The only distraction is the shape of the rolled petals in the very center of the flower.  It has more of a lotus pod look than the center of a rose.  Check the reference photo.

Otherwise, this beauty is waiting for a frame.

You've done a great job so far, Fiona! I really love the color of your petals - so delicate! I'd suggest darkening the shadows between the petals - that will give you more depth between the upper and lower ones. I think you can also darken your darkest greens, especially those under the flower. And I agree about this middle part that Mea pointed out.  And yes, this was much more enjoyable for me too than the foxgloves!

Thank you Mea and Sharon for your helpful comments ..... looking at the centre of the rose I see what you mean, it looks like a pigs' nostrils! I shall have to remedy that sharpish  :2funny:

I agree with darkening the shadows between the petals and the leaves - which by the way looked absolutely awful in the beginning! It's funny how it takes some different viewpoints to see where a painting needs to be tweaked, that's what makes this forum such a joy to be involved with - we are all learning from each other as well as from our excellent tutors  :D

Lovely rose, Patricia.    Advanced flowers are challenging, aren't they!

One eye grabber is the red rimmed petal at the top, just to the left of center.  Might want to see if you can tone it down a bit.

Otherwise, get that frame ready.

Patricia, the softness of the petals is breathtaking.  Beautifully done.

Patricia you did an excellent on you leaves and flower.   One thing that catches my eye is the hard lines on the petals, i think they are meant  to be shadows onto other petals. You may want to soften them.  Hope this makes sence to you.  It could also be the picture as it shrinks everything.   :flowers:

Fiona excelent  revision of your painting    :flowers:

:thankyou:  Danielle for your observations, I have softened the lines and also tried to dull down the one leaf Mea.
Thank you for having such keen eyes and helping me to improve my artwork.

:thankyou:   Zayn for your comments, much appreciated.

It's a beautiful painting Patricia-I struggled with those leaves as well so I feel your pain!

:thankyou:  Natalie.  It is comforting to know that I am not the only one who struggles.  However, if things came easy we probably wouldn't appreciate them as much as we do now and besides it is teaching us.

Danielle, I have posted my changes and put it under my original painting but the photograph came out a bit lighter. However, I hope that it looks better.  What I found was that the pencil outline was dark in the original and so erased them all as well.  Let me know if there is an improvement or not or should I do more?  Thanks Danielle.

This is the Rose that I painted. I gave it to my mom for Easter this year because she doesn't like to deal with live flowers. I borrowed it from her and she said don't forget I get it back. LOL Okay mom.
