Just getting clarity.... Is this going to be offered as classes or just as a special course offering that is separate?
I was going to purchase the materials needed but I will wait if its not going to be offered as a class. Looks like fun!

I finally found a art store that stocked scraperboard. They only had 2 x A1 sizes in stock and I bought it, was super excited. Got home and saw it was those rubbish ones  :tickedoff: with the foil underneath. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Don't use it!!  It is not forgiving, you can't fix mistakes. You can't make small flicks as it takes chunks out.
I will look where I can order online and redo this one when I get the correct board  :'(
Anyway so here is my initial try

Maryna,

The material might be inferior, but the finished product looks darn good to me.

I admire you for seeing it through.

Look forward to seeing what you can do when you get the right stuff.  You surely have learned the technique.

Go for it!

Ray, I love the comment from the author:

"If you're lucky these white marks eventually end up creating a picture."   Russ McMullin, Scartchboard Tutorial 2011

I could extrapolate this to every think I try to do with a pen or a brush  :2funny: :2funny: :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:   Surely, Nolan will disagree and say "You are as good an artist as you want to be.  All it takes is perseverance.".... but he also said "Realise that not every artwork you do will be a masterpiece.  Each artwork will however be an opportunity to learn from your mistakes". (ref: Top 25 artist mistakes, Nolan 2014)

Very well said, positive and encouraging  :thankyou: ... I should post Nolan's quote above my easel

Finally, here is my first attempt at scraperboard. I am not sure if it is me or the paper but I had a bit of trouble getting whiter without tearing the paper underneath. I am not usually heavy handed so I don't know. It was difficult finding scraper board without having to pay high postage costs on top. Some are called scraperfoil. Is that the same thing? Maybe Nolan could get some of what he uses at a good rate and sell it in his shop. Anyway it was an enjoyable activity and I will soon be onto the next one.

when you are doing large areas of white the plaster of paris does come off in little chunks, but as the area is very white you don't notice on the final artwork.

Scraperfoil is similar, but instead of plaster of paris, the base is a metalic foil. You get different colour foils, some silver, brass and yet others are rainbow coloured.

Boy oh boy this was a big job.  This took me almost nine hours to complete, so for me, for the time being, its finished. I am not at all happy with the front cheek,it looks messy. I have figured out that my paper is not white but silver, I did order white paper and it looks white when using it but it does shine silver at an angle and I find it hard to get good highlights.

Minny I think you have done a great job with your cat. Hats off to you.

Next on to the owl, I will use a different paper for this one and see how that goes.

:heeha: This was a trip!!!  :crazy2:     :2funny:   This may look a bit different than the other cats here... my sister's black cat (Oscar) kept insisting on posing for me by sitting on top of my ref. picture.  :knuppel2:   So needless to say there is a fair bit of Oscar in this my first attempt.

I do have a query Nolan. The trace paper I used had a few creases in it and left faint but noticible marks on the board. Silly me decided to try and wipe them away after I finished scratching the cat (on the board, not Oscar). I now have shiny sections on the board. Is there any way to get rid of them or is this one of those 'lesson learned' situations?

Anyway, here is the crossbred PB & Oscar cat!

Sherri you did a beautiful job on the fur.
The eyes don't look right. I tried comparing to the one Maylynn did, but it is too complicated jumping back and forth on my phone.

Thank you much Nolan. Both you and Dennis have such a way about instilling confidence in myself and others that I have no option but too try it all!!! :crazy2:
It is such a gratifying experience seeing what we all can accomplish in such a short period.  :yippee:

Natalie I though the same about the eyes but did not say anything because the other eye is in the shade and it is darker and the pupil is larger because less light is entering the pupil.  I hope I am right about that.

No it is not the size of the pupilla as Danielle said, it is the angle of the left one (the one on the right side of the paper)... it is very very minimally tilted by minus a few degrees, compare it with the original in the lesson.

Amazing that our brain can pick up such a tiny difference and bother us, yet difficult to know what it is.

Saying this, it is a wonderful piece of work.     Does lions have round pupilla?

it must be an optical illusion on the eye. I have taken Sherri's drawing and mine and overlayed them in my drawing program and they line up perfectly. I wouldn't worry about it Sherri. You have done an excellent job with this drawing. :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

I can't wait to see your owl, I think the scratchboard is your perfect match medium

Sherri, I have started very slowly with the cat.

What you did is amazing, so lively...  but how do you 'add a little color'?   Hope it is okay to ask.

I did some checking around on You Tube.  You can buy colored ink but you can also use watercolors which is what I did.

I found it pretty easy to do.

Here is my first scartchboarding lesson.  Rather fun and relaxing  ... but to take a descent photo was challenging.

Not sure if this is craft or art... at least what I have done was craft.

Used to do very nice photos with my old camera using manual settings... I dislike the point and click of modern electronic camera and now, I don't do enough photography to justify getting a professional one.

Need to take photos before the  :coffee:, or better go get a new tripod  :banghead:

That's what I thought would happen Danielle. I'll be buying up some of the Ampersand scratchboards before I go back. I did buy a cheap pack of 10 sheets of 'scratchboard' to use for practice. They feel like thin shirt cardboard so I've no idea how well they'll work. Only one way to find out...

Mea it was ripping but not all the way, so I have put some white out.
The paper looked like it was made of paper, foil, paris plaster and ink.  And i went all the way through the silver.

Beautifully done Danielle!

Something was really bothered me with the jaw angle on mine... when I compared it with yours, I immediately saw the problem, the reflection on mine is too 'broad and heaven'...

I managed with lots of snuggle to get one board of Ampersand.  It was very nice to work with, of course I have nothing to compare, but I have no problem.   I ordered a couple more boards and finally got an email today that they are ready to pick up.

Val, you would be wise to get some in TO before you leave.  I am by no way on a small city... and only one store had one board.  It took 6 weeks to get my little order in.

Alternatively, put in a web order to Blicks if you have a US address for delivery.

Prefers to be patriotic and buy Canadian and pay the premium... but they have to deliver.   >:(
