  O0 O0 Oh Natalie. . . my favourite bird and you have done it so very well!! Congratulations!!!
We have Flickers come to our bird feeder and it's so much fun to watch them eat upside down. . . . .it's those amazing tail feathers that allow them to do that!!!

Hmmm... I wonder if eating upside down would be a good diet trick.

I decided to do a little experiment and add watercolour to the
'Northern Flicker'

It wasn't the best idea as I wasn't using watercolour paper.
I only had my 110 lb. acid free white paper sketchbook.
The shiny paper is great for pen and ink but, buckles terribly
when water is add.  Oh well lesson learned.

I see the 'Northern Flicker' for 10 months of
the year. They are very skittish and approx. the size of a dove.

I guess I have produced my first mix media painting.

This looks really great. A good learning experience for next time with the paper.

May Lynn,

Glad you shared the info about the paper.  Good to know.

Your flicker in color looks quite good despite the paper problem.

Nicely done May Lynn.  I think this would look good on arches hot press paper.

Thank you, All for your comments!

Jillh;  Does hot press have different properties than the regular
        140 lb. watercolour paper?

ncwren;   I'll give Lillian's ironing technique a go!!!  Thanks for the tip.

Your Northern Flicker is wonderfully done.  The eye looks so real.  All the little spots are so well blended into the feathers!

Fabulous!

Hi all, Ryan wanted to give this one a try today but we are denied access to the reference photograph on the new website. Are both websites functional or is paintbasket working better?

Sorry Ryan, there was a technical hitch. I have fixed the fault and you should now be able to access the template O0

The Photographs opens no problem this side. Try refreshing your screen or a reboot. Let me know what happens

Still access denied I'm afraid. Tried on our desktop pc running windows 10 and on an apple iPad. Neither will show the reference photo. No problem with others so far and Ryan is trying his hand at house drawing ... But he really wants this bird!  :)

I will ask Nolan to see just why you are not getting the template. Have you tried opening it from page one of this thread. Click on TEMPLATE and see what happens.

It works from this thread, thank you! So there is just a problem connecting to the image from the new website - a headache for your "I.T." person to work on ;)

Having happily completed the Northen Flicker, Ryan is now planning on one of the buildings for next week. I will have to give him a break from pen and ink soon but there's so much good material here!
