Natalie. Your drawing is so good. I am envious. I want an electric eraser. Got to get me one!  I did my pic with a regular eraser. No comparison.

great job guys
I have been aching to show you how to use the electric eraser for ages, but it was important to get the basics down first, otherwise you tend to want to use it all the time and you can't.
Sherri, you did great without one O0

Sherri you did great work...the electric one is just quicker.
Mea it is an easy class.
Zilpa Im sure you will have fun with it.
Nolan it was a great class to intro that eraser. I would not have the courage to try it out on a complicated drawing. Honestly I was reluctant to use it on the wave... ;D
Thank you Patricia

I've had my Sakura for a few years and absolutely love it. It fits nicely in the hand and not heavy. I tried quite a few before I bought mine, I found some of them the eraser/holder were a bit wobbly...not good. Finally settled on the Sakura and never regretted paying a little bit more.  O0

Thanks, Nolan!  That should be easy to do, but I think I'll need an electric eraser to get the water to look like yours!

Has anyone tried those retractable eraser pens?  They also use eraser refills.

Liz

Not sure it's exactly what you are referring to, but I guess you could call it that... I have just about every conceivable rubber known to man..... and do I ever use them!   :heeha: :2funny:

It's works great as I can sharpen it with a pencil sharpener to a very fine point if I need it. It's taken a bit of a backseat to the electric eraser, but it's still great to stick in a pocket when I go tramping.  O0

Liz,

I bought a retractable at Fisher Hawaii on Cooke St.  It's a Pentel Clic Eraser ZE22.  I'm pretty sure it was quite inexpensive.  I keep it in my sketching kit I take on the bus.  It works well for big erasure,  I carry a kneadable one too for pinpoint stuff.

great splashes Liz

Bev, what you cant to do is darken the bottom of the wave then when you add the foam back in, let the foam run further up the wave - at the moment the foam just stops half way up, almost in a line. The foam will thin as it goes up the wave. Take a look at my drawing again and you will see the foam reaches pretty much all the way to the top O0

Shirl,

I think it looks good except there seems to be a line that is too straight across the top of the wave.  Break that line up a bit and it will be more realistic.

Doing fine!

:thankyou: thanks Sally Mea and Natalie. Mea I see what you talking about that line should be. It shouldn't be that straight to have to fix that.  This is the kind of picture I like on my walls I may hang this one if I can get it looking just to touch better.  :yippee:

The lines of foam running up the wave are too straight, they need to curve to follow the shape of the wave, That is what is bothering you O0

I finished this one today, took the photo and noticed that I hadn't cleared all the erasure bits away. Am not completely happy with this one - especially the right side. Any comments will be gratefully accepted.

It looks good Peggy-any parts you are not happy with just go back in with your pencil.

Peggy,

I see what you mean about the right side.  The splash over the rocks seems too solid.  Natalie had a good idea - fiddle around with your pencil with one eye on the reference photo.  Maybe darken the rocks a bit.

You've got a good foundation to tinker with.

what is bothering you about the right hand side is the solid mass of foam, break it up into streaks that follow the curve of the wave O0

Finished it but had this urge to fiddle, just like the other one. It's like doing my calligraphy - one needs to learn when to stop and let it go.

Great job Peggy, learning when to stop is a lesson you will learn when you have messed up a few by over fiddling like I have. It really is something you have to learn by experience.

:thankyou: Zilpa Yes, it is a hard lesson. When it comes to my calligraphy I have learned when enough is enough on the art work though....my tendency is to fiddle. Will learn with time.

great job :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
your darks could be darker - an easy fix O0
also just be careful of the fly away foam - they fly away in chunks which become smaller and smaller so be careful to not go too spotty too close too the wave

Nice wave Sally, once you add your darks it will show more of your wave.   I had to keep adding some myself.
Now here is my version and I am not sure if I have the far away waves technique.

Danielle,

This braking wave drawing looks really good.  Nice sea spray.

The half-moon c-shape) in the lower right corner held my eye like a magnet.  Might be good to break it up a bit.

Otherwise, you done good!!!

Used my electric eraser on this one. That thing just had a mind of its own  :2funny:

It's not quite right maybe too much foam in the front. I didn't have as much room down front as the one Nolan was working on so I think the foam got bunched together.

Lisa Gale,

All-in-all, it is pretty good since you were working with an electric eraser that had a mind of its own.   Mine did that yesterday, too.  I think it means the battery is going low.  I'll change the battery today and see if it can behave itself.

When you have replaced the battery, you can still add a few of the thinner loose foam in front of the wave to connect the large ones O0

Here is my go at thru breaking wave. Originally, I wanted to use an embossing stylus to make the sea spray,  but I wasn't really happy with the outcome. So I stuck to doing it with the electric eraser. I wore out one whole eraser insert doing it! Your comments and criticisms always welcome. :)

Val, actually it took around two inserts. One was used just for the sea spray. The other was for the foam.

This was a fun lesson. A lot of addition by subtraction.

Thanks, Kathy! I found I could get the effect by applying different amounts of pressure on the eraser and by honing the eraser to a point for the smaller spots of spray. I still want to try the stylus on something. It might be better for drawing lines, like the one in your shell. I wonder how it would work for cat whiskers?
