Title: Lynn's Pastel Paintings
Post by: lynn p. on July 03, 2014, 08:10:13 PM
Hey all you pastelists, I could use some help.  I wanted to do a portrait of my mom and this was the only reference I have of her while painting.  I am really disliking how it is coming along even though I believe I have captured her likeness.  I can't decide what it is that is so unappealing (and I REALLY love my mother :) ).  I think it might be the dull colors or the brown background--just not sure.  Any ideas.  I think I'll have to scrap this one as it seems to be getting muddy already.

Here is a revision after letting it sit for a day.  I decided to take Maylynn's good advice and do more of mom's painting.  I think it helped.  Decided to lose some edges (like the left sleeve--our right) and worked on the hand.  May be close to done.

I rather like the subdued colors myself, it sets a quiet reflective mood for the painting that fits with the subject.  I think you probably just need to put it away for a couple days...

I think this painting is brilliant, I cant see anything wrong with the way it has been done. You have created a beautiful mood with it.

I am with everyone else, the painting has captured the mood.

If you are concerned about the browns background, what about
putting in the horizontal  wood panel/ molding that is apparent in the Photo.

Also, maybe adding a little more of your Moms painting to
her pallet and this should offset the brown of the paper and liven up what
she is painting.

Just a few thoughts, your the artist it's your call.     :painting:

Hi Lynn,

I also think it is lovely.  It seems as if your mom is sitting and painting by candle light.  Soft and tranquil.
The likeness is very good.  Don't change it.

I think you have just pushed your limits a bit outside of your comfort zone Lynn. I know it always makes me start second guessing what I have done. You have a brilliant painting on the go here Lynn, just set it aside for a short while, study it in passing from a few different angles. It will come to you if any changes need be made, or you may just find you like it as is. Take some time..... it really is brilliant.  O0

Steven, Dennis, Natalie, Sally, Val, Patricia, Danielle, Iris, Jennylynn and Maylynn--I really appreciate that you have taken the time to look (especially because I have had little time lately to spend on the Forum and comment--very sorry).  I think everyone's thought about stepping away is probably the perfect one.  Maybe I just want it to be one of my best because it is my Mom.  I plan to fill in more of her painting eventually.  The light is actually coming from a light attached to her slant board and pointing at the painting.  Interesting that it looks like candlelight but I can now see that.  This feedback has been very helpful and appreciated :1hug:

Thanks so much Lillian, you are SO kind always and it means a lot coming from you.  I reworked some areas and posted the revisions next to the first one.  I gave more shadow to the left side of her head, lost some edges, did more of the painting and adjusted skin tones.  I think I like it better.

Dear Lynnp;

The color of the sweater goes sooooo well with the yellow glow/reflections
off your Mother's hair.  Your additional revision finishes the painting
beautifully indeed!!!!   :painting: :painting: :painting:

Thanks Maylynn and Bella.  My brother saw it and wants it.  That is ideal as my mother is not the type to hang a picture of herself in her house but I think she would like my brother or sister to have it.

I know I moaned about my last painting and have struggled to figure out what I don't like.  Well, I think I have it.  I love portraiture and want to get better at it.  I think I have been unhappy with my dullish skin tones.  I am starting an experimental painting from a fab photo from paint my photo of an older gentleman.  I am going to exaggerate the coolness of the shadows and the warmth of the highlights in the first underpainting and then gradually take the colors back to what they should be.  I think that this might help my shadows look more complex and the brights have more of a shine to them.  I thought I would post the stages and anyone interested can see if it is a reasonable approach.  This is not my idea but I learned it from an artist that does this with landscape and still life.  Seems it should work for skin tone also.  I start with the darks and chose purple as I see a bit of purple in the brownish shadows of the face and in stage 2 I start to add some orangeish colors that I see in the warmer skin tones.  In stage 3 I am starting to take the skin back a bit to where it should be.  I have tried to generally keep the value structure throughout.  I will keep at this and post along the way if it interests anyone.  If you all try something I love to see the WIP. I ordered some Girault skin tone sticks and will wait for them before doing the next stage.  By the way, for anyone loving portraits, those Giraults are a dream.  They are a big harder but super creamy and bright and go on great but you can also draw with them, almost like a pencil.  I found a few on ebay and not want more!

I thought I better do the skin of the body in these bright colors to match the face while I am waiting for my Giraults, lest I forget. Also, it seemed like I better choose a color for the background before finishing the face so I added these greens. There is a stunning watercolor painting of this gentleman on PMP if anyone is interested.  It is delicate, light and just gorgeous.

Hi Danielle.  Thanks.  The site is Paint My Photo and several people here have used it for copyright free photos.  You are actually encouraged to paint the photographers work and there are some decent compositions in many of the photos. I think if you go to the site and search "old man"  you'll see the watercolor painting of him after you scroll down a while.  I think my version is going to be more in your face color than that version.  I could never produce a watercolor that exquisite.

Couldn't keep my hands off this and so worked for about 3 hours on hat and cloth.  Still waiting on the giraults to adjust the skin tones.  I posted this because something amazing happened as I added more green and brown--the in your face oranges and pinks of the skin started looking skin-bronze, almost like I eventually want them.  Nolan and Dennis always talk about this but this time it just seemed so dramatic.  I'm glad I did more before going back to the face soon.

Thanks Sharon and Danielle.  I always appreciate your comments :1hug: .  No, Danielle, I haven't touched the inside of the hat, those lines are my drawing.  I thought I might mess some more with the face so didn't want to stick my hand in the hat if possible--you know how that goes!.  My friend calls me peppermint patty because I am always such a mess when I finish a painting session.  Also haven't finished anything else either.  I need to clean up the cloth some more and more detail on the outside of the hat.  This will be a bit of a long term project but really enjoying this one.  I won't bore anyone with more posts, I'll wait til I finish.

Thanks so much Ray and Dennis.  Ray, this is 12x16 on Wallis sanded paper.  I used old grumbachers, mount visions, unisons and my new giraults, all considered  soft but the giraults are probably the hardest of the softs.  I used pastel pencils for the eyes only.

Fabulous Lynn, glad you showed us all the steps,  very interresting subject.  I see just a bit of light under the left eye above the cheek (our left), which may have been caused by you fixative.

Thanks Danielle--It might be the fixative but also I noticed on the face that I would apply pastel and the next day it almost looks like it sunk in or dropped off because the color was now more bleached out than had been.  I am going to do a bit of touch up.

Oh Val, you are funny but thanks so much for the high, high compliment!  If I were in guatemala I would be looking you up for some of those  :painting:  lessons you've been giving.  I think my problem seems to be that I get slavishly tied to the image i am painting and end up with something that is dullishly realistic, at least to my eye.  Very hard for me to put my own twist on things or to be loose enough to forget the details if you know what I mean.

Oh thanks so much Lisa, I didn't see your post!
Here is my latest painting.  I must say that I have a new found respect for flower painters.  I struggled and struggled and just finally quit.  It seemed at first that I just study the shapes and paint them, but clearly there is much more to it because this is my worst attempt at pastel so far.  Back to the portraits for me!! Any C and C welcome from you flower painters  :help: !

Lynn,

Background and container look really good.  Maybe the flowers need a bit more shading as they don't seem to stand out as separate blooms (especially the ones on the right).  Color is pretty, though.

All in all, it's really quite lovely.

Linn do not give up so easily, pastel is a beautifull medium and you did very well, the silver vase is great so are the flowers, maybe you need some hightlight on some of the flowers for us to see where one petal starts and the other stops.  All in all it is very beautifull and it is not a fill 13.

Am trying something new.  I have a reference photo for inspiration but after I painted the two people at the bottom and the guy at the right, I put it away and tried to do gesture drawings of people and get away from my photo.  Not sure it is a good idea.  What do you think.  It is very impressionistic and probably not good perspective!. Even though I can tell it's not quite right, it is very good drawing practice.   I have many more people to insert but tired for today :) This is terracotta sanded paper with softies.  I am going to let some of the paper shine through and not cover it all.

Dear lynn p.

The scene  reminds me of local festivals found in many small communities each Summer.

The distance between the stage and the two main spectators seem somewhat
out of range for listening to a concert.  They seem to be too far away from the stage.

Just my thoughts when I viewed the painting.

Thanks  Natalie, Mea, Maylynn and Patricia for looking.  I am not quite finished.  Maylynn, I intentionally made the distance great because this is a national Jazz festival that draws 70,000 per day and all stages are packed with distant viewing.  I have to put another 50 little people in to get that feeling I think.  But good observation.  It would be far too far normally.  I also have to get that lamp bank out as it looks like an evil creature coming down from the sky.

Thanks for looking Zilpa, Fiona, Natalie, Danielle and Mea.  Yes Mea, I find that I can either do my homework or be on PB :) .  For my drawing class, there is nothing much to post.  We are doing sessions of measuring still lifes in charcoal so that I can get better at sighting angles, proportion and know how to visually use plumb lines to correct.  It is almost like math class and not much fun yet.  We soon graduate to the form.  I have homework too which is a bit more fun.  I'll post the icon I just finished on the acrylic thread.  Here is a pastel I did last night (I should have been doing my drawing homework!!!!).  It is from a photo by Kathy Paulus.  Will be just lurking for a bit longer but best wishes to all.

Had a couple artists comment that I needed more aerial perspective in the distant trees and that the treeline took away from the focal point a bit so I made these changes.  I actually like both versions.

Natalie--yes, I was rather blown away by the same thing.  I used an orange underpainting and quite a bit shows through the trees in the first.  When I repainted the treelike, it definitely softened the painting but almost makes it look like another season, with the first looking like a blazing hot afternoon.  The second more like a cooler autumn day. Fascinating really!

Well guys, off to see my mother.  She has not seen her portrait which will hang in my brother's house (she doesn't like images of herself so this will be best).  I had her portrait professionally framed along with her sister's portrait and they came out surprisingly well I think. Amazing what good (and expensive   ) framing will do.

Oh Val, that was quick!  Thanks a lot.  Hope all is well in the carribbean!  Actually, I am off to take my mom (86 years young) to a beach house in grayton beach for a few days.  She hasn't been out of the house in some months and is nervous I think, but really wants to put her feet in the gulf.

A few people here asked me to post some of the things I am doing in Drawing class.  We have an option of doing graphite or charcoal and I chose charcoal.  I realized that there is no place on the Forum for this type of drawing so I'll put this one here for the moment.  Class has been very HARD but rewarding.  I suppose anything that is worthwhile is a challenge.  Our first several drawings have been still lifes.  This looks so boring and simple but it took me hours to measure it accurately and get the angles right with my sighting stick.  I always have a headache and arm ache after class (is it a fourth?  is it a third?) etc.  Next we will do some value drawings of still lifes without any contour lines (that should be interesting) and then learn to draw skeletons. the teacher believes that one should study and draw anatomy before drawing the head for portraits.  She is teaching in what is described as the classical way.

Now that sounds exciting! I loved playing with my charcoal, of course by the time I was done I could have joined a minstrel show!!!  :2funny:

Do enjoy your time with your mum, it's wonderful that she can still travel and enjoy. Touching the gulf waters will feed her soul. I'm still up in Canada sorting through things and mum is still in the hospital since June.

Please do show us more of your lessons as you go, I don't get to do much nowadays but love seeing what everyone is up to.

Those two framed pastels are excellent.   I agree about the frames. A frame can either make or break the visual impact of the painting.

In South Africa when Nolan and I operated our Franchise we personally framed most of the paintings produced by the 5 studios, which kept us very busy on the side. We also made sure our frames were made to a high professional quality.

A very good painting with a cheap skimpy frames makes it look cheap. An average painting with a very well selected frame will enhance the painting beyond measure.

Thanks Danielle.  It is pretty basic but that is where I am with this!

Dennis, I couldn't agree more.  By way of example, I took a large pastel landscape that I finished and think might be my best, and put an inexpensive frame on it.  It immediately looked drab and ordinary and I am considering a new frame.  I was shocked at how much worse it actually looks framed versus unframed.  These two seem quite the opposite.

This is my latest.  Not that great but it was a welcome break from my charcoal drawing class in which I am learning lots but I must say it is tedious.  So I hit the studio and abstracted a PMP pic of a bunch of green lilly pads. It is probably overdone but I bought some Terry Ludwig violets and had to try out the eggplant which is the darkest dark in this painting.

Thanks Steven.  I LOVE the old world still life you are doing and admire your patience.  Lisa--Go for those TLs, you won't regret it.  I do love his pastels but they are quite soft so I usually start with Nupastels as a hard pastel underpainting and then add the TLs.  On the Waterlillies I actually started with Nupastels and brushed over them with alcohol.  Not sure it was a good idea though as the tooth seemed quickly filled on the color fix, but with a light touch it worked.

Mea--You are right about the commission!!!! I think he wants to be my agent.  I really don't care much about selling but will retire soon and I know I'd like to have a bit of extra so maybe I'll let him ::)

Hi Lillian.  So good  to see you on the forum.  I've been away for many months as am taking drawing lessons but took off for a month around Christmas and have enjoyed Dennis' watercolor course.  I think of you often as I am struggling with my lessons and know how much you enjoyed your classes.  For Christmas I got a male and female wooden artist mannequins and will start back drawing them tomorrow.  The drawing takes so much of my time that there is little left for painting but I know that some day it will pay off, at least in confidence.

Had the day off today and it was beautiful so I decided to walk to the bayou near the house (a scene I have photographed before and done watercolor from) and try plein air.  I don't love this at all.  Find it rather boring but the experience of painting outside was wonderful and good desensitization for me.  A bunch of runners passed but it didn't make me particularly nervous.  This is after 4 hours.

Lynn,

This is beautiful and all the more impressive being done en plein air.  I thought people just did easy scenes when out in the open, but this is really detailed.

You are so very talented!

Mea, since this was architectural, I used a plein air drawing I had done of this scene and roughed in the buildings but not the trees. I had done the pencil sketch on another day.  You are right, it would  ave been very hard for me to draw and paint in 4 hours.  I think I will try simpler plein air experiences next but loved being outside and seing the actual colors.

Christina, Natalie, Patricia and Jill   :thankyou:  for your nice feedback.  You should try getting outside when it is warmer.  Very fun.

Sally, this is my second plein air.  The first was much easier.  I'll post it.

Thanks Mea.  I actually was forced to use the pinks and purples because I brought along just 20 pastels of different values.  In hindsight, I think that is a good idea because it forces color harmony because you end up using whatever lights or darks you have.  Wish I had restricted myself a bit more today.  Try that!

Hi Lisa Gale.  I think it depends on how far you are walking.  I have a portable suitcase like thing that carries my pastels but I used some empty boxes that my TLs came in and put together the pastels I thought I might use.  I intentional brought soft ones, not hard to force myself to be looser. I brought two folding chairs (one for my pastels), no easel but a clip board for my paper, a bottle of water and some baby wipes for my hands.  You could get much more elaborate! Of course sunscreen and hat are a must

I love cows, chickens and sheep but never tried painting animals.  I am going to try this experiment.  I am using a vibrant underpainting to note light and shadow and then build to more realistic colors, hoping to get more interest.  No idea how to do the next step, I'll just wing it and see what happens.  This is from a reference on PMP.  Trying to find my own style I guess! This is hard pastels (Nupastels) on 20x24 Colorfix

HI Lynn,

I've looked through your thread of your pastel paintings and find you are a very good portrait artist... excellent drawing skills

One comment I would make is if you want to really add some wow factor, add some focus to the eyes in your portraits... ie sharpen some edges and add some hightlights...

In the painting of your mum I would bring the eyes and glasses into focus more...

I realise its probably too late for these portraits but its something you might like to try in the future..

Hope you don't mind me commenting

I understand exactly what you say about good ref images.. Nowadays when I paint a portrait, I will take the pic myself. I bought a DLSR camera and do my own photo sitting with the client... I take up to 100 pics or so in different lights and poses... then sit with client and choose an image or selection of images for the final portrait..

I used to paint everything and anything just to make a dollar but I've now learnt that its not worth the heartache.. one of the hardest commissions I ever accepted was painting a baby portrait from a 53 year old 2" x 1" black and white photograph with a coffee stain right in the middle... I agonised over the painting for months ..  the commission was worth quite a bit of money so I kept at it.. Never again though

I'll keep an eye open for your  next portrait..  O0

Yes Bruce, I have learned this the hard way also.  I have usually taken my own photos so can't blame it on others but I too have tried a few portraits from very old family photos, one in black and white.  That one ended up looking more abstract because never could get it right.  With the portrait I am about to start of a friend, I have taken many photos but none look good enough to use.  I don't have a fine camera and need to invest in one. For me, although I paint from other's reference photos, I don't feel the same connection with the painting unless they are my photos.  I really need a photography class to know more about setting up a good shot.

Well, today was my painting day with a friend.  I am working on a complicated icon of Christ the Good Sheperd and planning a portrait.  All was not going well so….. I decided to PAINT A COW!  I think from now on when I hit a roadblock my new coping method is to just PAINT A COW!(or a sheep, chicken or pig or any silly barnyard animal).  The painting will have you grinning and giggling in no time, you can use any crazy colors you want and the cow won't complain about the absurd lack of likeness.  I had a GREAT day.  Can you tell?

Great painting Lynn    Actually there are more of those colours in nature than you are normally aware of. They are often subtle but they are there. Take a long look at top professional artist's painting and see how they add these colours to make the painting vibrant and natural looking.

Here are two of my favourites:
http://williamthomasgallery.com/ (http://williamthomasgallery.com/)  This shows some of Robert Hagan's works. Google him - he is an Australian with a tremendous sense of humour!

http://www.newzealandartist.com (http://www.newzealandartist.com)  Richard is a personal friend of mine, also from the North Island in New Zealand. He is a master with colour.
http://www.paintbasket.com/art_reviews/color_mixing_dvd_review.php (http://www.paintbasket.com/art_reviews/color_mixing_dvd_review.php)  Our review of Richard's DVDs. I have a set of his DVDs - excellent O0

There are many more artists who paint like them!  If you want to shine - copy their colours.

Thanks so much Dennis and Selen.  Wow Dennis, thanks for these links.  Really beautiful use of color here.  I know about Richard and own several of his DVDs.  Funny, you must be a mind reader.  Just this week I was thinking about going back and rewatching his video on Mastering Color as he has great tips on color combinations.  Another person that uses color well, in a loose painting style with pastels is Karen Margulis.  She has a daily blog and uses an Analagous color wheel and decides how to add little "spices" of color which are unexpected. She had an interesting entry one day.  She chose sticks for her beach scene from her own photo by picking sticks that matched Monet's color palette of one of his beach scenes.  I love that idea as the Masters have often "mastered" color. Thanks for taking the time to give us these references.

Help needed on reference photo for portrait.  I have struggled with bad reference photos.  I am a terrible photographer.  Do any of these strike you as a good portrait reference.  I wouldn't think about skin tones and eye color as I believe I can adjust that.  Which face, if any of them would make a better portrait? This is a friend and all of them capture his personality.

Lynn if your model is available I'd reshoot him with a more neutral background and if you can play with the lighting don't hit him with a flash unless it is diffused, best would be if you have a light on a tripod not at the camera but offset to create interesting shadows.  You will spend a lot of time painting the portrait, may as well try a few more shots for a stronger composition.  I'm with Sharon, I like 2 for the angle and expression.. it's a bit out of focus though.

I started Arthur's portrait today, focusing in on the eye area.  I am using a pretty heavily sanded black paper mainly because I don't have a toned paper, only white and thought that might be harder than black.  I usually like to use taupe for a portrait.  The black might work to give dimension to the beard over the dark shirt though.  Funny how you can immediately see problems in a photo.  The right eye needs adjusting and given more slant.

Oh Natalie, Val, Bella, Sherri, Mea, Danielle, Jill, Patricia and Zilpa.  You all are the greatest cheerleaders.  I am taking a BREATH as suggested by Natalie which I needed.  I don't have the likeness quite yet, the beard is not dimensional enough and some value changes on the face are in order. The glasses are bronze and haven't tackled them yet.  Today I visited with Arthur and as he was trying to tell me a story, I kept staring at his beard, trying to figure out shape, color and how to separate the mustache from the beard--poor guy, I didn't hear a work.  He is not a monk but everyone thinks of him that way so I put the crucifix on the wall as it symbolizes his life well.  If it comes out, I am going to give it to him.

Lynn - MASTERFUL!  That's the first time I have used that word (my highest compliment) twice in one day.  (Danielle earned the other one).

Every feature of this painting is superb - even the cruxifix.  Love the top of his head with those few wispy hairs.

Be so, so proud.

Jay, Jill, Val, Sherri, Mea, Fiona, Danielle, Christina, Nina, Dennis, Selen, Dirk, Susan, Patricia  :thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou:
Arthur saw the portrait yesterday and I think was taken by it.  That was a relief.  I feel that it is still not a perfect likeness of his spirit but he seemed flattered and I think he liked my background and the monk like setting, as that is really who he is.  I was trying not to capture the jolly Santa look as he really does look like Santa (so say all the school kids who ever see him) but he is more complex than that.

Oh Bruce, that is so kind.  Nothing like the caliber you can do but I really appreciate your comment about needing to focus on eyes, which I tried to do in this portrait.  I think it made a difference.  This is my "sit with it a week" time as I always see something off if I do so.  I just discovered that the left ear is too tall compared to the right so I'll fix it and give to him!

Love the sunlight on the trees and water.  Agree with Danielle about the halo effect of the clouds.

Hard to distinguish what the whitish spot is at the bottom of the big palm tree on the right.

Those are gorgeous palm trees, by the way.

Nice reflections in the water, too.

Did this pastel of my husband today.  The likeness is getting close but what really makes me sick is that when I took the photo of him, his hand, which is closer to the camera, appears too large.  I know the camera does this so I was quite far away and cropped the photo.  Any ideas of what to do?
Title: Re: Lynn's Pastel Paintings
Post by: dennis on June 15, 2015, 01:46:31 AM
The best lens setting on the camera for a portrait is a focal length of 100mm on a 35mm camera. The next best is a lens setting of 135mm. If you have a zoom lens then adjust it to these settings as close as possible and you will  minimum of distortion.
Your problem started with too wide an angle lens. A longer focal lens squashes everything up. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much Doina.  I do like the colors but too bad about the distortion.  Dennis, thanks for this info.  I guess with the advent of iPhone and iPad I tend to take all my photos with these and can't prevent distortion.  I need to go back and relearn photography.  Weird that I didn't immediately notice the extreme distortion until the painting was almost done.

Lynn I see what you are saying about the ear and the right eye. For the eye you have to lighten and drop the top lid a bit,  for the ear you have to lighten a part of the dark area inside the ear going toward the outside.   One more thing is to lighten part of his neck gradualy.   Hope this helps.
It is an excellent painting.  Just those little tweeks and frame it.  :yippee:

Did this little pastel today, mixed softs on sanded paper (italian clay color), 8x11.  I was practicing skies.  I see some issues with it now that I've posted.  C&C welcome.  What I see is that the lilac in the front blocks the viewer from entering except by the narrow path in the center.  I will change that.  See, Dennis and Nolan, your compositional comments do pay off sometimes!

Lynn,

You do such magnificent work.   That distant sky is gorgeous.

I was already going through the opening in the purple flowers when I read they were blocking my entry.  If it's bothersome, looks like you could easily widen the entry to the left.

Just a lovely piece of work.  Ahhhh!

Here is a painting I have had in my head since my friend Cathy died in the spring.  This is the only photo I have of her.  I wanted to paint her happily as an angel but ideas sometimes don't translate.  So, I think I will have to lose the angel wings because I don't know what I am doing with them.  I will add "LIFE" to the side of the cup and give her a chair.  She really did drink in life.

This is a Conte pastel pencil drawing of my new great niece, Alex.  Not sure if I should have stayed with the sanguine color entirely instead of adding the dark sepia.  She has very dark hair and that is why I added it but it takes away from the delicate nature of a baby.  What do you think?

Lynn,

What a sweet little baby.  You did a wonderful job.

Not sure the sepia is flattering.

The hand seems out of scale - should be smaller, I think.

This is so beautifully done. I agree with Mea, the hand does appear a little bit big, but then I had a nephew that had somewhat large hands with long fingers when he was born.....he is a pianist! My Nan had that pegged the first time she saw him!  ;D

I think the sepia has helped to give contour/depth to the drawing.

Brilliant Lynn

MayLynn, Mea, Lisa, Val, Natalie, Dennis and Patricia--Wow thanks for all the great feedback.  I measured the hand carefully and I think it is accurate, HOWEVER, I think you picked up on something important.  I wasn't careful with the gesture of the hand which should be more rounded and babylike so thanks for that!  Also, I tend to agree Mea, the Sepia feels harsh.  I think I need to see how dark I can get the sanguine and see if I like it.  Will do another.

Oh Lynn, this is such a sweet piece, well done

I don't really mind the addition of the sepia, I think it anchors her to the blanket. I agree with you on her tiny wee hand though - it's a bit too angular for a baby.

Those life drawing classes are really paying off!

Thanks Fi, Jill and Danielle.  You guys are quite the powerhouses of portraits yourselves.  Am starting a new little project.  I want to paint about 9 12x12 pastel portraits of children, some who I know and some are strangers to hang as a grouping in my office where I see kids.  I started today with these two portraits.

Lynn,

These pastels of the children are beautiful.  Great hair.  Beautiful fabric on the white top.

Check the left eye of the girl with dark hair -- looks like it comes to a point at the bottom  Love the blond girl's eyes - so deep.

Super!!!

I agree with Mea about the dark haired girl's left eye (our right) also the same girl's mouth seems to droop on her left (again our right) and under her nose looks a little flat and possibly too wide between the nose and mouth

Thanks Danielle and Kathy.  I messed around with this last one a bit and brought the brunette's mouth up a bit higher and fixed her eye.  Here is another addition to the portrait wall I did today.  Am experimenting with styles.  This started out as a charcoal sketch and I brought the face and hair to completion with pastel pencils rather than sticks, leaving the rest fairly unfinished.  What do you think?

Thank you guys so much for your comments on my little girl drawing.  Went to an awesome, fun workshop today.  We each chose a different artist and a master copy we wanted to do.  The day was spent studying the line and technique of each artist and drawing a copy. We were asked not to grid but to work freehand by placing center lines on our original and thinking about negative space.  We had wonderful Lori Lockwood to show her amazing oil paintings and a classical guitarist playing as we drew.  I chose this Degas.  I learned a lot!

Lynn,

I get this totally vicarious thrill of being at your classes through your sharing them with us.  Just curious - were you aware of what you were going to do beforehand and so came equipped with the work.  Or were you given works to choose from when you got there.  Oh, wait, I bet in this IPad age, you got a chance to look up an artist, then choose a painting.

This piece is so soft, delicate, and beautiful.  Sounds like an enchanting day.

Please keep sharing with us.

Been messing with this portrait for a few days and it is just off.  I am trying to learn to draw from a photo without tracing so it could be off in a number of spots.  What do you see.  As soon as I posted I saw several things I didn't see by looking in the mirror.  The hairline is off, the face I think is too long and maybe the mouth too low.  Seems like a missed a slight head tilt gesture.  What do you guys notice?

Lynn,

This portrait of the little boy is quite nice.  I noticed a couple of things, but nothing serious.

Yes, your head tilt is too the right, but the photo is more to the left.

The white line across the top of the glasses seems to stand out too much.

Tip of the chin is too dark.

Regardless, I think you did a great job.

Oh thanks Mea, those are very good observations.  You have a good eye!  I am not pleased with him and think I will redo him on sanded paper, which I like.  Here is a painting of my fellow painting partner's godchild.  She has special needs, is totally delightful and painted with us one day.  She begged me to do her portrait and I think I will give it to her.  This is really a drawing, done in pastel pencil.  I plan to pump up the color a bit by using some soft pastels over it.  C&C welcome.

This is a WIP.  I decided to try out my new found charcoal drawing skills on this big painting.  I think I often spend little time on the drawing, eager to get to the painting so I tried to focus on the drawing for a few days and started to lay in some color with nupastels.  Haven't started the skin tones yet or soft upper layers.  I am struggling with the color palette.  The photo that I simplified has some terrible color combinations.  I want to keep it simple but make the center girl the focus--thus the complimentaries.  However, I think I need more darks so wondering if I should make the girl on the left a brunette.  Just don't want too much attention on her.  This photo was taken by my art teacher of her kids.  I am not trying to get a likeness, just an interesting painting.  I like it because the focus is really the viewer!  Any thoughts on color choices would be great.

Lynn,

I have no doubt that whatever you choose will work out fine, most likely stunning!  This is way beyond my skill level to give any sort of meaningful suggestions.

Oh, the girl on the right looks like she has two different parts in her hair.  I'm so out of the loop that maybe it's a whole new hair style that I know nothing about.

Kathy, thanks so much.  I am not making these girls look just like the photo but hope to make them believable.

Mea--You ALWAYS give good advice, you silly girl.  Yes, it does look like a new hairstyle!  My color was growing out and this young woman said "you have that modern ombre look, light on the bottom and dark on the top!!!  I had not idea what she was talking about.  I am so out of it!  As for the painting, that line in her hair is just where I stopped adding color over the charcoal.  Not done yet.

Susan this is my rendition of the brunette on the left.  I darkened hair and clothes.  Don't know how it will play yet until I get all the skin tones in.  This is another day's work.  It was wonderful.  We live on the Jazzfest and I painted while listening to Neil Young, live.  Many Blessings here :) :)

Looking lovely,Lynn! Now I see that the focus is clearly on the middle girl.

BTW until you mentioned it, I had no idea what the ombre look is! Had to Google it. I just thought it was people whose hair was growing out, or people who were overdue for a roots touchup. I'm growing my hair out, too, and it is at that stage--about 4 inches of new growth. So glad to know I'm right in style.  ;D

Win-glad you got a chance to look through and thanks for the support. I started out in oils, then to watercolor but I think my passion is pastels. So versatile. Good for painting and drawing. The downside is the expense. I bought many of mine on eBay.

Jay, Dennis, Lis and Gita--nothing like responding a month and a half late!  So sorry.  I have really been a bad PB friend and since I can't stop in often, I should probably just stop because it is so rude to do it this way.  I really appreciate your encouragement though and it has really moved me to go to class here at the Academy.  Learning SO much too.

Here is a quick one night sketch of our model at Open Studio tonight.  I can use pastels there but not in class.  Hope they will let me graduate to them soon.  Although I do love charcoal, I am color deprived!!!!

Thanks so much Win and Gita for looking in and to Val, Mea and Steve for the encouragement to stay connected.  I really do love the people here and once had so much more time.  I find that I must make a decision between drawing/painting or being on technology.  Wish it weren't so.

Thinking about taking a color and design class from the founder of the Academy of Fine Arts here.  It would start in June and I hear we have to produce many paintings with different complementaries and with the golden mean in mind--so tons of homework so will be busy but can't wait! Have to say though that NOTHING has been as hard as figure drawing!  Wish I cold show some and you would laugh!

I attended a pastel portrait workshop to learn to do portraits from life in pastel pencil and nupastel.  It was a different approach for me.  It took me forever to do this and still not the likeness I would like.  I now know why charcoal is SO much easier for life drawing!!

Lynn, I have become so enamoured with pastel and have been studying various artists and their techniques. Yours is showing such a massive amount of growth and refinement. (That would be a major WOW...just in case you're interested  ;) )

Some blend to the point of photographic quality, others just use lines and never or seldom blend at all. I'd say you are somewhere in between and it looks fabulous. So hold tight and continue on your path, you are doing exemplary work for those of us who flounder along in your wake. Lead on MacDuff!!!

Gosh guys thanks.  Big thanks to Mea, Sharon, Patricia, Cyril, Straynative, Dennis, Win and Val.  Val, you are perceptive!  I think I am leaning toward finishing the faces a bit more and trying to leave the body a bit less finished.  I kinda like that.  This approach is more delicate than I have used before--more like a pastel drawing with some soft pastels used only in the face.

Dennis, I actually had a question about the highlights in the eyes.  I drew this from life and looked for highlights but none visible from my vantage point.  Do you think I should always add them anyway?

Thanks guys, this really helps!!!!  I kept measuring the length of the nose and not the width, especially in the middle.  I can see what you mean.  The other thing that hits me as I look at it on PB is that the mouth and chin need to be pushed back a hair.  What do you think?  Thanks Dennis for the comment on the teeth.  Her mouth has given me fits :) :)   I can't thank you all enough.

Beautiful portrait Lynn.  I would add more shadow under the chin.  Also check the angle of the edge of the left eye.  I think yours is a little more upright.  It's only a fraction out,  however, in my experiece even a pencil width out can change an expression.

"Who will ascend the mountain of the Lord? The innocent of hands and pure of heart." Psalm 23:3.  The final of lovely Elizabeth on the day of her consecration.  Thanks so much for all of your help.  It made it better I think.

Oh Teresa, that is very kind.  I think all one needs is passion.  I dream about portraiture :D  and still have miles to go.  I really believe that anyone can learn to draw.  It is so easy however to lose one's confidence.  My sister wanted me to do a "happy, zaney, abstract in bright colors" for her shop.  I tried my hardest but it was a total failure--I mean really terrible.  It was humbling and made me realize that to be ok in one type of art or drawing doesn't translate to other forms!!!

Thanks so much Val and Win.  I was actually surprised at her reaction, however, she is a kind, generous and holy person--what else would I expect from her

Want to share what I am doing in Alan Flattman's class (a well known pastel painter).  He is teaching us landscape and city scape painting---WAY out of my comfort zone.  This might be the first building I have ever drawn :) Don't know if all that figure drawing helped or hurt.  I spent 5-6 hours on getting the drawing in while others just zipped along and started laying in color quickly after a minimal sketch.  Yikes.  Hope the detail will help mine, we'll see!!! Here is reference of a coffee house I haunt on weekends and the sketch.  We start color lay in next week.

:heeha: Wow Lynn, when the colour goes in, and with your attention to detail,  this will be brilliant. I can guarantee you that!  O0

How wonderful to have a pastel artist at hand. When I was captured by the pastels I, in my ignorance, thought soft pastel was soft pastel. I now know differently and understand more of why I kept bumping my head into a wall all the time!

I can't wait to see your progression on this.  :yippee:

Thanks for looking in Val and Win.  I am learning his very meticulous approach.  He spends some time on the drawing with sepia pastel pencil first and darkening areas with vine charcoal.  He makes his own pastel paper which this is a piece of.  He will soon share paper making which we will do in class.  After the drawing is down it is fixed several times with Krylon or Blair fixative before the pastel goes on.  Then he lays in color with hard pastel and fixes it again.  Finally he builds up color in midtones and lights only with soft pastel.  Eager to watch his process.  Believe it or not he sometimes uses a light acrylic spray from a distance to give atmosphere such as a foggy day.  That takes some courage!

Thanks so much Patricia and Fi.  The thing I am learning in this course is to use fixative frequently in the middle of the piece and to keep the darks transparent and the lights heavy, like oil.  I'm not good at it yet. This is where I am on this thus far.  I still need to adjust some values and add some lights.

You are all so kind!!!  Thanks Val, my teacher wants me to try and draw in some faint detail back in the shadows as he thinks it looks a bit too empty.  I think he is right.  The trees are aso a bit spotty and I need to highlight the people a bit.  I think I will try and draw in a waiter.  Mea, you are funny.  This is coming along because I took my time with the initial drawing--a very good reminder for me!  Thanks so much Win, Teresa, Rebecca and Sharon.  Sharon, I will never be able to leave portraiture behind, it is my true love.

Yes, Patricia--I was very scared.  However, I am in this class hoping to stretch myself so I took a chance.  (I remember thinking as he was speaking "add things? what do you think I am, an artist :o :o "  Ha! I think my teacher's thought was that the people under the portico weren't grabbing enough interest and I needed more depth.  Don't know what he will think of these changes, will find out Wednesday.  Not quite done but I am posting the last one along with changes underneath--waiter, extra person who I guess is ordering and some doors.  What do you think?

Ok, my day is made and the sun won't be up for a while yet! (uproarious laughter...sniffle..sniffle)

Well, if you weren't before you certainly are now. The waiter and extra person are brilliant.... the additional reflected light under the portico on the wall and doors is a stroke of genius. More depth, more interest added, it is telling a story now. I can here china and cups and glasses clinking from within, murmur of voices, the waiter discussing the day's menu items... so glad you left out the dog weeing on the right hand column  ;)     :2funny:

Seriously Lynn, if I didn't need my cash to buy more pastels and paper..... you could stick a red dot on this one.  O0

Well, I went to class last night and Alan liked the changes.  He has such a good eye for composition that he had more thoughts.  He asked that I get rid of the hard horizontal edge of the grass, lighten the sky and consolidate the greens of the trees so here is the final.  It has really been a good experience.

Hi Patricia--Alan is a man of few words I think.  He thought that the doors in the dark area, as he had suggested, really helped and was pleased with the addition of the waiter, the extra person and a few plants.  He thought it really made the focal point clear.  Thanks Val, I do think he had good suggestions! Yes, he is amazing and is the new president of the International Pastel Society.  He has decided to just have an ongoing class when he is in town which is about every other month.  He is in Scotland teaching for Sept so I will finish out August with him and back again once a week in October until his next trip.  Yes, we are so fortunate and he is humble and knows everything about pastel.  I hope I get to see you because I want to give you his latest book on pastel which is crammed with how to information and just wonderful.  I can pick up another from him.

Lynn you are so gracious, but you must let me know how much it is. I'll gladly pay for the new one for you.

How wonderful to have such a talented individual at hand. I made mention of working with pastel the other day and to my surprise was told, "That's when you paint with pale/light colours".  :faint: I would love to be able to able to add pastels to the painting classes, but since they are not readily available here I think it a moot issue.

That's funny Val. I think a lot of people think that. Been noodling around today and experimented with making sanded paper by applying Colourfix pastel ground to the back of some old water color paintings. Good use for them. It seemed to come out fine! I know Alan makes his own ground from pumice powder, acrylic gesso and acrylic paint to tone it-will record the formula and try to get a little video.

What a great piece Lynn! Love the contrast between the light and shade.

I just finished my second pastel piece and found that the fixative darkened the entire piece. Are you finding that as well and compensating for it, or are you not having that problem?
Title: Re: Lynn's Pastel Paintings
Post by: lynn p. on July 30, 2017, 06:21:01 PM
Hi Barry.  Thanks for your comments.  Here is my experience.  If you use a fixative like Blair, it will definitely darken the piece and I have used it to intentionally darken only parts of a painting.  I never use it after the intial lay in.  I use Krylon workable fixative after that as I don't notice any real darkening, however, having said that, I don't use fixative on portraits at the very end because the skin tones are usually exactly what I want and don't want to risk it.  I always use sanded paper so the pastel stays put very well. I used the Krylon at the end of this piece and didn't notice any difference.
