Title: PNI - Lesson #9 - Cheetah Portrait
Post by: dennis on May 07, 2014, 03:26:01 PM
In order for me to easily find and answer queries about this Lesson I will appreciate it if everyone will keep these  to this specific Lesson Posting only. This will also be of benefit to you as well in the future.  Thanks

I now realize how important directional strokes are in Pen and Ink.

I am finding  it hard to focus on the techniques of PNI and at the same time watch the directional
changes needed to made the figure look realistic/believable.  I am sure more practice will help
immensely!!!!!

May Lynn, you are coming along famously in the pen and ink
Those directional strokes also apply to all the other mediums in art as well O0

Hi Dennis and Nolan, I have joined the Pen and Ink Club and could not find the pencil drawing for the Cheetah. It would seem that Ray is also having a problem in finding it.  Please can you direct me to where I can locate it. Many thanks,  Patricia

Dear Ray and Happychappy;

I don't recall getting a template.   I think I made one from Dennis' final rendering found
in the reference material at the bottom of the screen in the video.

Hope this helps!  :painting:

Beautiful work Natalie.

I have a lovely photo of a jaguar I want to do, so this lesson will be invaluable to me. Unfortunately a rather sad story to go with it, but that will be told when the drawing is done.

Val, Pen and Ink should lend itself beautifully to the Jaguar and I would be interested to see how it turns out. So get on your :run: and let us see.  Hope the story isn't too sad for you will have me crying.

I just went to check and had no problem downloading the reference photo. Here are the steps I followed:

Open the lessons list and click watch opposite the cheetah. When the screen opens, the reference photo link is right below the video screen. Click on that and the reference photo will load in a new tab. Then save.  O0

Jill, with the new player, you may have to scroll down a bit to bring up the Resources Box where the reference photograph is. The new player tend to fill the screen in the computer.

Well, I wonder what they will say about me? I'm not a real artist?  MY, MY, Oh dearie me come. come :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:  I'm a completely self-taught artist, and proud of it. I would like to challenge them to see who paints the better?  self-taught or Art School taught.  We have one in the vicinity and the results are atrocious to say the least. I retired as a senior engineer at one of the largest construction and design companies in South Africa without me even seeing the inside of a university :2funny: :2funny:

Thanks Natalie and Dennis!  And I really appreciate reading your links, Dennis - I had no idea you were self taught - you're as professional as...no, I take that back, you're MORE professional that many of the top notch artists here in Sacramento.

In my prior life I was the premier event planner in Sacramento and before that I ran the community development department for a large, national bank. As a result I'm fairly well known here and have a lot of relationships. I also do TV work for our local public television station and am often in the newspapers/magazines.  Folks have said the only reason I sell so much of my art is because I know a lot of people.  But as my husband points out, people don't spend money on art just because it's from someone they know...and many of those folks have bought multiple paintings of mine, which they wouldn't do if  it were because they're a friend...and I've had a number of "strangers" buy my art who don't know me from Adam.  I can now tell myself I'm like the definition of Dennis' professional (see below) - and this is how I now make a living. I work hard...I study and practice daily...and I market constantly.  And I'm so blessed to have found PB...thank you all for making me feel that I am an artist...

"I. a. Professional, Pertaining to, connected with, or appropriate to a profession or calling.......also engaged in one of the learned or skilled professions, following an occupation as a means of livelihood or for gain (as, a professional soldier);.........also, undertaken or engaged in as a means of livelihood or for gain, or by professionals rather than amateurs."

There is no reason whatsoever that stops anyone on the Paint Basket in becoming better than Nolan or I.
In fact, nothing will make us feel better if that happens. I have had some of my students in the past who have surpassed me and
I have never once felt jealous, nor felt threatened by it. Why?  Because they are my best adverts.
No names, no pack drill, but there are some on the Paint Basket who are already excelling in their various mediums    :flowers: :flowers: :yippee: :yippee:

If you put your mind to it (dream it), you can achieve it.
Dreaming cost nothing, but implementing the dreams costs time, effort and, very often, money
The impossible happens immediately, miracles just take a little longer O0  and I believe in miracles.
Hang in there - you are doing us proud O0

I've been told A few "established" artists in Sacramento are telling folks I'm not a "real" artist because I haven't been classically trained (since I didn't go to an art college.).

It's quite simple really..... while some need a regimented education to learn; others, such as yourself.... are just naturally gifted and need only a guiding hand to bring out your talent and potential. Find an artist/master whose style you'd like to emulate, and should they be gracious enough to help you on your way you are most fortunate. We at PB are doubly so... we have two of the best who not only teach us the hows and whys, they encourage us to find our own voice, our own style if you will. So, although we don't end up with a printed piece of paper to tell the world we are artists....we have something better.... we have beautiful works of art to show the world we are artists.  O0

Besides, how many of those 'real' artists have their painting(s) hanging in townhalls and government offices...?   ;)       ;D

The Russian artist Tretchikoff, who eventually settled in South Africa many years ago was ostracized and criticized by the Artworld in general because they said his work was "coffee table" work. His made his large fortune by selling prints of his painting all over the world. He said he was sorry for the other artists because they were still struggling money-wise while he was laughing all the way to the bank :2funny: :2funny:  Many years ago I came back from Italy with a couple of thousand Lire and when I went to the Bank in South Africa to exchange them the Bank Manager laughed at me and said to go home and paste them on my lounge wall to show other that I had been to Italy - worthless!  So often that other piece of paper that cost so much to gain has become worthless to the owner thereof - such a pity!

Dennis, thanks for clarifying what self taught means to society.

Mea - we returned last night - sure wish we could stay for another day or two - I would have liked a bit more time to just lounge by the pool and paint on my balcony! It was such a nice vacation - gorgeous hotel right on the beach, amazing restaurants, fabulous whale watching trip on a catamaran, the BEST Elvis Tribute show I've ever seen...We took 3+ mile walks daily on the beach, even made a trip to Mama's Fish House for lunch.  We'll definitely be returning to the Lahaina area. But boy am I missing my ocean view right now! And not enjoying the 385+ emails that awaited my return!

Elize,

The cheetah is fantastic.  So sad the look in his eyes - like he was trying to say, "Why is that hunter trying to shoot me?"

Great job.

Dear Mea, Val and Lisa, thank you for the motivation and encouraging words!  I enjoyed the session really a lot, especially because the cheetah is one of my favorite animals in the wild!
