Anita, an excellent rendering of the elephant and the grass

Just tone the whites of the eye down as one very seldom sees them except when they are very angry or frightened. Their eyes are very much smaller than most people think they are.

Carol, you are off to a good start    Only problem is that you have overdone the hatching somewhat. Remember that the lighter areas will have very few lines. Rather too few than too much O0 Keep it up- you can only get better.

Maryna,

Amazingly nice work on this elephant.

Can you create a bit of distance for the small tree above his ear.  Looks like it's growing out of him.  Maybe just darken the top of the ear a bit.  The other tree seems okay.

Otherwise, it's totally magnificent.

I was stuck with a Gforce .03 ballpoint pen and an overly long church sermon.  I had traced out the original and had the black and white print to copy.  Perhaps someday I will get a chance top use my mapping pens; but alas they sit in a cabinet at home.  Doodle time again.

 :D  Barry, that is a very difficult question to answer because .... there is no answer.  Through trial and error I also came to the conclusion that our trusted friend is not welcome in this medium.  Apparently you have to look for ways to cover your mistakes or would I rather say put in some nice accents where you did not plan to put it  :2funny:

It is really a nice medium and I would say .. go for it! :gl:

Maybe some of our friends with more experience will also be able to give advice  :help:

:heeha: I have wanted to take this lesson and draw this  elephant since my first day on PB. I finally took the plunge and am so glad I did. Oh how I wish my mom was still alive to share this with her . She adored African elephants and has painted some beauties over the years.

I am planning to do this drawing a second time. There is so much to learn and I had a few areas that I would have liked to adjust but.... It's ink.  :-\. I went too dark on a couple of spots on the head which makes it look dented. I also think my cross hatching is too even in some areas. I'd also like to loosen up the brush area. Any and all insights are most welcome.

Kathy,

I admire you so much for trying pen and ink.  It seems so intimidating.

You did well on this.  So many little details.  Wow.

aloha

:thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou: Many thanks Mea, Gita, Dennis, and Patricia. You have no idea how much yourhonest encouragement and insight helps.

After I finished my elephant, I was absolutely thrilled with him. Then.... I went and looked at all the other elephants many of you drew in this class. I started to compare mine to the others. A big no no  :o  . I started to question my drawing.  Thankfully, a good nights sleep and the insight of my fellow classmates has given me a fresh perspective.  Again, many thanks.  :thankyou:

Yeah, a big mistake. I think we all compare our work to others. The styles and level of skill will run the gamut. But never belittle yourself because someone can do better than you. Use it as a goal to shoot for. Remember, a tennis player gets better by playing people a notch or two better. :)

:heeha: Super Effe Kathy! The one thing I learned about working with ink is that it is better to go lightly at first. You can always go back and fill in the darker spots and contour with more hatching afterward.

Be proud of this endeavour Kathy, quite a complex fellow.  O0

O0 I completely agree, Steve. and I know this in my heart. It's a wonderful thing to admire the beauty of someone else's talent and style and remain loyal and true to our own. I do love that we have many artists to play and grow with here at Paintbasket.  :smitten:

:thankyou: Thank you, Val. I really am quite proud of my elephant.  :yippee: I do see what you mean about waiting to go darker later for contour. I still may draw him again soon as I'd like to see what kind of contours I can enhance the second time around.  O0

So I did draw the elephant a second time.  It was quite exciting to draw him from the photo with only limited reference to my previous drawing. I did not follow the video this time. Having had the recent experience of doing the lesson with Dennis, I had the tools fresh in my mind. What I noticed this time is that I was seeing for myself where my highlights and shadows needed to go. I really had fun finding the contours of the ear. It's my favorite part of this second drawing.

I sure love these classes!  :yippee:

Wow great drawing Kathy.
I keep seeing everyone's great work and think i will subscribe to the online classes and get alot more information than i do from my local art class lessons which are  very expensive and something i can't afford. Although teacher is top artist we don't get alot of variety and she seems to only encourage the best students, so i have been looking elsewhere.

Kathy, you are getting fond of elephants! This one is also so good. I cannot compare both since I am online on an iphone at present. I am going for this class next. This sounds so exiting.

:thankyou: Thank you Val and Steve. Yes, I am happy with the results of going darker. Too do that I had to leave other areas lighter. It worked out quite well. As I've said many times, the support from all of you gives me the tools and the confidence to grow.
