Title: PNI - Lesson #5 - Rose
Post by: dennis on April 08, 2014, 03:41:18 PM
In order for me to easily find and answer queries about this Lesson I will appreciate it if everyone will keep these  to this specific Lesson Posting only. This will also be of benefit to you as well in the future.  Thanks

Dear Dennis;

While watching the lesson #5, I noticed that you used the coloured photo
of the rose, not a black and white photo copy to get the tonal values.

Can we use a photo copy (black/white) or is it better to stay with a the
realistic image in colour?

Which way is it easier to figure out the subjects planes/strokes?

May Lynn, a very good question.

Until you are able to naturally see the tonal ranges in the different colours (comes with practice) the black and white version is of great help.

I suggest you  have the colour photograph near at hand so that as you draw you can then keep on comparing the black against the colour. You will train your eye very much quicker this way.

I've been doing it for so many years that my eyes are trained to easily see the tonal ranges in he colours and to translate them to black and white.

It is not always easy to explain in writing (words) alone just how to do the strokes. I can only suggest you carefully follow what I am doing and study why the strokes are in that particular way. Study the strokes in the   final demonstrations.

Dear Dennis;

Here is my first attempt at drawing "the Rose'

I panic towards the end and over did the far right petal.

I lost focus and the petal's plane lines got distorted/disappeared
on me.

I'll have another go in a couple of days.

Ok here is my rose. I just used an ink pen for this one until I get my supplies. So this will look different from Dennis's. Mine is more bolder strokes. Little hard to get fine lines. Good practice though.

Thank you, everyone for your kind comments.

I too was intimidated at first with the thought of spilling
ink all over my office floor, but, using Dennis suggestion to
put a small container inside another one put my mind at
ease.

I hope this course is here to stay and lessons continue to flow!!!

:thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou: again for the encouragement.

Every where I go I seem to have a pen with me.  It is such a great tool.  Though not water proof the Pilot g-2 comes in .7, .5, and .38.  I have emptied so many of these pens that now I just purchase the refill.  In my home I prohibit any other pen to be used because I am always doodling. in the past I would always end up with some bargain trash pen when my kids would come home from school and swap my personal effects.   Nothing worse than an old crusty sun dried BIC. Now I make sure we all have plenty of the Pilot g-2's laying around.

This was a bit of a challenge because the video doesn't include the entire lesson so I had to make it up as I went along, especially towards the end. But maybe that's the value of this class - trying to figure it out myself!!

Great job as usual!  The video you saw must have been the old intro one and not the full video. Youtube has a partial one too I think.

As mentioned in the fighter jet thread, we've returned to using paintbasket for our homeschooling art. Rachel chose to do the rose first so Ryan chose the fighter jet this week. Rachel has always been interested in art and this is a great opportunity for her to learn various techniques. They're both teenagers. They used black biros for this - I need to invest in proper tools for Rachel in particular!

Carmel,

Welcome to Paintbasket.  You have found a great place to learn and enjoy art.

Wow, you were brave to try Pen and Ink for your first attempt, but you did a wonderful job.  Lovely petals and you even did the waterdrops well.

Hope we see lots more of your work.

Thank you Val for your interest. I have been watching PB for a couple of years now but have other hobbies -cross stitch, knitting, gardening, that I love as well. I managed to draw maybe 10 hours a month with pen and ink, pastels, and watercolour as my mediums. Then I decided to take Nolan's Hobby to Business course and realized that I have a ton to learn. Now I have to decide- am I going to get serious and study these classes-not necessarily to make money, but more to see if I can get good at this .Just skimming the surface is the easy way out...Thanks again and see you in class.Carmel

Hi all, I've done several roses over the last few days. Although there is still a lot mistakes on this rose I wanted to show this to you..... then I don't feel alone   I would like some advice from you  :help:.  Unfortunately I do not have the right pens and ink.  In the small town where we stay there is not much choices!

Elize,

I think you did an excellent job on this rose, especially if you are working with pen/ink that is not really right for the application.

I do not do waterdrops well, so I cannot really say if yours could be done better or not.

Keep drawing, as you get better all the time.

We are staying in Groot Marico, Nortwest province of South Africa.  Our nearest towns are Zeerust and Rustenburg.  I considered the order by post thing myself, it's a bit frustrating to do the exercises if you do not have the right equipment!

Thank you Patricia and Mea. I really like your encouraging comments. I like challenges and always want to get better with next drawing/painting. And before I start painting I try to imagine in my mind if I am able to handle it. :) I enjoyed painting with ink, because it reminds me of my primary (elementary) school time. We did much ink drawing in school in our obligatory art lessons. Maybe that is why I always thought that ink drawing is just for fun for kids, not a real art medium.  :2funny: But, please, do not misunderstand me, I had distorted view of many aspects in art until I started painting myself.

Free Hand drawn from photo so may look i little different from the others submitted.
Using Uni pens.
I got carried away making the leaves too black and i was also looking at the photo's shading more than what Dennis was doing so my shadings have come out much darker than others.
Also i shouldn't have done the background as it was getting late and I was getting tired so it is bad.  :-\
