Lovely drawing, Jennylynn. Very neat    Some of the feathers on the neck and shoulder should have been left with no detail (or very little) in them to give the eagle that "golden" look. Fortunately you have left some of them.

If you are brave enough, you can take a very fine round brush and some white acrylic and cover up the strokes inside the selected feathers - comparing them to the photograph

Lovely Jenny.  I hope you have an idea for your next one in the works. It's an incredible feeling seeing something of your own design emerge from the lines. I hope the winds/seas settle enough for me to finish my project soon!

Yes, Val, I am so very excited  to get started and I know that I am going to love it ... just hope that I will find the time .... not enough hours in the day and by the time evening comes when I can settle down, I have the problem of the darkness and poor vision.  Oh! Well, I will get there eventually.

I understand Patricia, I am hoping to find a large magnifier with light that I can attach to the salon table. Another joy ride when we get back to Guatemala! Maybe I should draw on the bus like Mea does!  ;D Actually I did try doing that a while ago...not an easy thing!

Title: Re: PNI - Lesson #3 - Golden Eagle
Post by: CarolHorvath on June 16, 2014, 04:25:05 PM
Thank you everyone..it was fun and I got into a zone of some kind with paper and pen. Natalie..a brood patch is the area on a birds chest that actually has a split in the feathers where the skin is bare and surrounded by soft down. This is the area where the parent wiggle the eggs into to incubate with their warmth. The patch is found on both parents, but is much more predominant on the female...she is the main incubator. Have you ever seen a bird get situated over their eggs and then wiggle and wiggle?  The eggs are getting next to their skin. Thanks for asking.

I almost didn't post this, but decided it's ok to post failures sometimes! I obviously overdid the cross hatching at the end. I almost didn't do it because the eagle looked really good until then...I've never used an ink pen before today so I obviously need to practice more with that...I may do this again but up until that point it was really impressive!

That's what cropping is used for. Anyway Sharon your got a lot of practice in.  I'm skeptical with pen and ink, when taking the drawing course I used my eraser A LOT!!!!
Can't do that with Pen and ink.

You're so sweet to find something positive to write, Liana! And Robin, if I cropped this guy than it would only be the head showing! Oh well, practice makes perfect since I'll be doing this again!

exactly what Val said! :D I am so glad you posted this so we could let you know that your efforts have paid off! It is easy to see that you had done a banner job with Mr. Eagle - just a bit heavy on the crosshatching at the end! :1hug:

Sharon,

Had you not called attention to the part you think was bad, I would have just thought they were darker or shaded feathers.  Looks fine, really.

Everyone is so kind but I'm really glad I've taken the time to redo this Eagle - I'm so much happier now and learned a lot doing it twice! Now I can go on to the next lesson with a clear conscious!

Finally got Ryan's eagle photographed the right way up, lol. The challenges of technology! I think he's taking to the pen and ink well although he still prefers graphite 8)

Wow, Ryan.  You have really done well with the pen and ink on this eagle.

You have made an "angry" bird!

Great work.

:thankyou: for the encouraging comments! We are both really happy with the way these classes teach techniques which will help in creating all future artwork. I think it is so important to develop these abilities   O0

Here is my attempt at the Golden Eagle.

I've really enjoyed going through the posts and seeing everyone's eagles.  What amazes me is how even though we followed the same class, how everybody's eagle has its own personality.  What was really interesting was how each person did the beak and the eye just a little different with shading to make each Eagle look unique by each artist.

Any feedback to fine tune my drawing  is appreciated.

Forgot to mention that I tried to stick to using a nib and ink for the entire picture.  I used a .3 pen a few times but for the most part I tried to only use the nib with a reservoir.  It was my first attempt using a nib instead of a pen.  I enjoyed it and liked having to slow down to dip my nib every little bit so I wouldn't rush my drawing.  Sometimes I start to rush and that is when I start to make mistakes in my drawings.

Looks good to me, Clivus. Maybe a bit darker where the feathers overlap to help define them more.

Way to go, Clivus.  I'm terrified at the thought of doing pen and ink.

You did well.
