Post by: dennis on April 08, 2014, 03:37:44 PM
In order for me to easily find and answer queries about this Lesson I will appreciate it if everyone will keep these  to this specific Lesson Posting only. This will also be of benefit to you as well in the future.  Thanks

Thanks Denis, great lesson:)

Here is my sketch.  I'm not very happy with the tree trunk - is there a fix or should I try to fill it in?

Very well done, Anita

My only worry is the "Y" trunk inside the tree - it is too symmetrical. You can rescue the drawing by closing up the right hand part of the "Y" and thinning down and tapering off the left hand one  O0

Post by: Helenty on April 13, 2014, 01:26:14 AM
Here is my version of the exercise in Lesson 2 , did the drawing freehand as I need the practice , the house is a little wonky but will do better next time
as it was mainly for tonal value.

My sketch was done freehand anyway O0  I'm more looking at the techniques used.

BTW I moved the post to here to keep it in the same thread.

Nice work on the tonal ranges.  Looks like it is more difficult to do in pen/ink, than in pencil.

Ok, so I gave up trying to focus on all of the exercises.    Did these yesterday while recuperating my back after a rather 'boisterous' dinghy ride back from town. Gave me something to do while stuck in bed. Just a word of caution.... dip pens and ink wells are not the best idea when the studio is bouncing!  :2funny:   Couldn't get videos to run yesterday so this is done by my not so brilliant memory  ??? missed a few bits, but I think it's close enough.

Thanks Jenny, if I'd thought a bit before hand I should have looked at the others again!  :D    ;D   I scrubbed the bush at the side of the house in after I'd already done the wall, I see I missed the doorstep completely!
It was neat to watch the picture appear in such strong contrasts. Now I remember why I used to enjoy pen/ink so much! However...... I had forgotten how the nib could catch the paper and send a fine spray across the paper!  :heeha:

:2funny:   On to the next bit!  :yippee:

Thank you much Dennis. I think in my case, it's what you'd call 'selective' memory. I seem to recall certain things reasonably clearly, such as art related..... but don't ask what I had for supper yesterday!     :2funny:

I thoroughly enjoyed doing this and already have a drawing done for my first original! Oh dear, but I do have lofty ambitions at times.  :heeha: We'll see how that turns out AFTER I do the farmhouse!  ;)    ;D

You're getting through Jill, that's the main thing. I'm finding the squiggly bits are difficult to do with the dip pen. I'll have to keep an eye for any kind of waterproof markers.

The little house is great fun, look forward to seeing yours.

Title: Re: PNI - Lesson #2 - Tonal Ranges
Post by: dennis on May 16, 2014, 12:33:20 PM
Very nice work, Cyril

The reason you are not happy with the right side house is that the perspective is not right. You have made it higher up the hillside but the perspective of the house is of one actually looking "down" onto the house and not looking up to it from below.

Too many struggle with the concept of perspective so maybe I'll do a Lesson on perspective in the near future as we will be doing some more architectural and landscape drawings in the future.

Dennis , agree with you ,  i always struggle with perspective stuff... especially when i   draw live architectural building structure and the drawing is covered on the whole page.... The Vanishing point / horizon goes outside  the page :(

Natalie, You have done very well - excellent cottage
In the tonal range chart you just need to darken the following blocks (2nd row from the bottom and in columns 3 and 4) up a bit more - they must be the same tonal range as the others in the same row.

You may want to darken the left hand side of the roof and side from darker to lighter, that should give you more depth to your house, i think the shadow in the door opening is done the opposite  way. That is my though.  All in all it is nice and clean.

My rendition of the Tonal Range drawing.

My farmhouse seem to have had better days, my door also got lost along the way  :2funny:

Maryna,

Good job on this drawing.

One thing though, the horizontal lines on side of the building should be straighter unless the building is really about to fall down.

Drawing is such fun.

Judy, seemed to have missed your drawing :o
Judy and Maryna both your drawings are very good    The whole idea behind this particular drawing was not so much for accuracy but for you to get the feel of drawing with the pen - an ice-breaker, if you want to call it that O0

My submission for this lesson.  Did this freehand.  Not exactly right.   I messed the roof a little but tried to fix it.  Didn't do too well.

That's not a bad freehand Sherri, I don't know about you...but I got pretty nervy when I tried freehanding in ink.    Just the thought of making that wrong line!

Well done.

Hi.  Just finished the pen and ink tutorial on tonal shading.  This is my first post.  I am also enrolled in the Let's Draw course but haven't done anything yet to post in that class.

Here is my house in pen and ink.  Don't know if I got the house quite right in regards to perspective but hopefully got the shading correct.  I really enjoyed watching the picture take shape.

Yes, Val. Now I see where it is slightly off kilter but I had to look hard for it.  :detective: Perspective is something I am still feeling a bit shy about.   :o  I sort of get it but it is a struggle.

Steve, I totally agree. So many lovely mediums to play with and not enough time. Also, I have so many art supplies for what I am already working on. But....  when I'm ready to spend more $$$ and time, pastels are calling out to me.  :D

I am kicking myself that I did not start pen and ink sooner!   I LOVE it.

Here's the little cottage from Lesson 2 on Tonal Value.

I am more excited about this than anything I have done in art so far.  I know I have a lot to learn - maybe the perspective stuff will have more meaning for me now.

So much to learn; no time to waste.

Thanks, DENNIS!  That lesson was the best $9.00 I ever spent!!!
