Title: Shading Yellow
Post by: Val on April 05, 2014, 04:55:39 AM
I am working on a bird in flight. I need to show shading on the underside of bright yellow tail feathers. Every mix I've tried ..... turns  :envy: green!

Thinking next of trying a darker to grey/black, but leaning more toward brown than blue. Does this make sense?

    :help:

Natalie is right Val.

And if you think about it, purple = red + blue.

So yellow + purple = yellow + red + blue = something in the direction of a black!

To varying degrees it's the same with all compliments.

Batman.

I did try a purple-y colour.... maybe I just need to make a purple leaning more towards red? I just need a light shading, no deep shadow.
I'll keep trying. Thanks for the input guys.  O0

To get the shadow of any colour you add a touch of the complementary of the colour.

Take Cadmium Yellow for instance. The complementary of yellow is violet. When you add a touch of the violet to the yellow you get the shadow colour, which, believe it or not, is actually Yellow Ochre ;)

I did try yellow ochre, just not producing the right effect. It did work quite nicely for some of the areas at the top of the wing. I suspect I've just not hit on the correct 'violet' shade.  Never fear.... I shall persevere! :knight:

Thank you much Dennis. I'll keep you posted, if all else fails I'm going with the PB 'mishmash'!  ;D
