That's beautiful colour you have there Nathalie. I'm going to have to get some more pastels - my basic set is frustrating. Mine has gone a bit blue in the camera.

    Wow, wow, wow Natalie, what a beautiful pastel painting and you are right, the sky is phenomenal.  Great job.  I missed the class but will catch the replay.

    Karen, a very nice try too. Doesn't it make you mad that the camera changes the colour of the pictures?  I have had it so many times but now have a new camera and don't have to go through all that nonsense again.

Natalie and Karen,

Both farm house pastels are beautifully done.

Love the blue hue.

Love the warm brown tans.

Two different colors, but equally appealing.

Two very stunning paint-a-longs. Excellent    Each one depicts another time of the day.
Remember, I'm not really worried about the colour as each one's pastel collection has a different set of colours.

I look to see if the techniques are being used properly. and both these excel for a paint-a-long :yippee:

Jennylynn, also a very lovely painting    Just sharpen up the left edge of the house and it will pop.
Also be careful about optically blending different subjects together - Just shift the two pieces of washing on the line as they look to be part of the tree trunk. Other than that you are doing great O0

Patricia,

I like how you made your mountains kind of misty in the background.

My eye was immediately drawn to the circular path (driveway?) around the front of the house.  It seems too bright.

Otherwise, it's lovely and bucolic.

:thankyou:  so much Mea. As I posted it on the forum, I thought so too.  I don't understand why I can't see these things before taking the photograph.  I will tone it down for sure and another thing I noticed is that the one little garden seems to be smack in the middle of the path!!  Oh! Boy, perhaps I need new glasses or a magnifying glass because I see all these things AFTER I have posted the painting.  Thanks anyway for your valued input.

I meant to pop in again after class, but I ended up in the hospital.  I'm now recovering from some abdominal surgery and my hubby was kind enough to bring me my computer.  I'm hoping to get out of here soon and be in next week's class.

Jennylynn--I love the movement in your painting.  Also that green is really complemented by the Red laundry which is whipping around.

Patricia--wonderful sky and general mood.  I like the circular drive.  Honestly my first thought was, "If I lived in Patricia's house I would leave only momentarily and then circle back immediately to home, Who would ever want to leave Patricia's warmth??"

I guess you won't be visiting me then Patricia... the Rio is so full of all kinds of living creatures. I had to save a little gecko the other morning....almost did him in with my scrub brush!  :faint: He was fine once I rinsed him off and put him on the dock piling. He probably jumped back on as soon as I turned my back!  ;D

Lisa and Val, the area in South Africa where I come from is sub-tropical and we had EVERYTHING there but the most dangerous of all were the green and black mamba's for if bitten, you have 20 minutues within which to get to the nearest Hospital otherwise you are history and we had these snakes come into our house!! Some were as long as 6 feet or more.  I had to call the protection services to get one out of my kitchen. The geckos were plentiful too. I would be bathing and they would fall off the ceiling into the bath causing me to jump out the bath and then have to try and save them. Oh! Scary stuff. We had Vervet monkeys in our backyard like we have squirrels here in Canada. They too used to get into my kitchen and steal my fruit or sugar.  I could tell you stories that would probably make your hair stand on edge but those were the joys of living in Africa and I would not have changed it for anything.  It actually enriched my life and endowed me with a healthy respect for every living thing.   Patricia

Hi all
This is a lovely scene and everyone's paintings are really well done.  I printed the template out too small so it was quite difficult to get any detail without pastel pencils but I had a go:)
To be honest I'm glad I've never come closer to a snake than behind the glass at Chester Zoo ...

    Anita, you did a fine job on the West Coast Farm. Yes, it was a lovely scene and I enjoyed it immensely for apart from the painting, it brought back many happy memories of my life in South Africa.

Oh! Mea, I have so many stories of close encounters with deadly poisonous snakes and the strange thing is that I could never kill one but had to get other people to kill them.   My life in S.A. which as I said earlier,  really enriched and blessed me tremendously.

Mea, I forgot to mention that lions, leopards etc are only found in the Reserves and not in the urban areas so we had no fear of them but snakes, lizards etc are everywhere and as I say the monkeys are very prevalent in the KwaZulu coastal areas where I lived.  Yes, an interesting life to be sure.    Patricia

I painted this one on Canson  Mi-Teintes Pastel paper (yellow),
as I was curious to see if the semi-arid would be enhanced.

The clothes on the line had to be done over and over again
as the pastels seemed to be absorbed into the paper. I don't know
if it was the color of the pastel paper or the softness of the pastels I was
using.  (Sennelier) Many other parts of the picture also got 2 or 3 touch ups.

I tried photographing this with a light source above and then without an external light.

May lynn

p.s.  excuse the tooth brush in the background.

Well done, Juan-Carlos

The only part that worries is the intense blue on the side of the roof. That should actually be the shadow colour of the sunlit roof. Add a brown over it to bring it in line with the roof colour and then you will see the great improvement

Hi Juan, I inserted your 'missing' photo at the top of the thread only to discover it apparently was not the original photo. Nolan asks that you not delete previous photos that have been used in a post as it leaves a 'hole' in the post.

Great job on the farm house, I'll be trying some of these shortly. Well done.  O0

Hi everybody, I have not been on here for awhile. Thought I would drop in. Been very busy. But I did get a chance to do a pastel painting.
This was done on watercolor paper, with pan pastels. On top of them I used pastel pencil and sticks for the highlights. This is the first time working with pan pastels. They take a little while to get use to. What I do like about them is the nice coverage they give you for the back ground. They cover very well. Also very little dust. They also go a long way. Which is cool.
I have not been able to comment on everyone's work. But I do get a chance to look at the art work. I must say all of you are doing very well. Those of you that I started with have come a long way. Great job guys. Very proud of you.
May be I will be able to get serious about my art after all of this work is done of the house we are trying to get ready to sell. All most there. So talk to you all later. God Bless.

Hi,

I first make a sketch on ordinary cheap paper for School Kids' painting lessons. This paper is very thin and has no texture, and usually the painting comes out like this  :D

And I use Vincent brand similar to Mungyo. As much as I press the pastel (for tree leaves and flowers) there is No pastel on the paper, I bought a soft white this time, first I use the soft white then I apply red or yellow  :painting:

I hope to upgrade to a soft pastel and pastel pencil set, but I am taking my time....

Love

Selen

Oh, wow, Selen.  What a difference the paper made.  The second one really looks like a pastel while the first one looked more like a watercolor.  Guess all that nubby paper really holds the color better.

Regardless, you did a great job on both of them.

Carey,

Better now, but still could use some more contrasts and textures.

Try to rough up the dirt in the front a bit.  (Nolan does a neat trick with just paint spatter from the brush, but I'm not sure how big your painting is, so you'd need to be really careful. Try of practice paper first.  Or try dragging dry brush strokes of several different earth tones over the spot. I've been studying a lot about texturizing!)

Shade the right wall of the house a bit more.

The grasses behind the house need to be darker in front, then lighten up as they recede.

Just little tweaks, but they will make a difference.
