What I'm seeing in other sites is if it covers the entire page it's painting, drawing if it's just an object on the page.

I think that if you have a brush in your hand it is painting,  but if you have a pencil like object in your hand its a drawing. I would think painting is wet, drawing is dry.  That's just my opinion.

I hope you don't mind a quote from a book, but I have "Painting with Pastels" from famous Pastels artist Maggie Price:
Quote
Drawing is a matter of line, however, while painting deals with shapes, masses and color. When you use pastels in this way and cover the surface with pigment, the result is a painting. Maggie Price, Painting with Pastels

I have also read from many other professional artists generally the same as Stephen and Batman have reported.
I think I use to wonder why it was called "painting" as I use to think of pastels as more like "chalk". Of course, thats when I absolutely knew nothing about it compared to now having a knowledge of pastels so large that one might call it just a "smidge".

Some say PASS tul, Some say PASS TEL.  Po-TA-to some say Pa-TAH-to ...  Call it what you will, I suppose.

I vote for painting, but generally speaking I do not worry too much if I paint with pastels or draw with pastels.
But how about our monthly challenge?  Should I draw a bike or should I paint a flower with pastels? :painting:

I've seen artist use pastel wet (water, alcohol and fixative) for an under painting.  You can move it around with a brush and make mud with the colors....I think it's painting with more of a hands on approach.

Painting occurs when the colours are blended together - this, when the various pigment particles mix.
Pastels are also made of all the exact same pigment particles except that the binder is different. While it is not as easy to mix these particles as in oils and  watercolours, for example, to a large extent they can be "mixed when using pastels. Just take a simple example: There is red applied the pastel paper and if I add white to it it becomes pink. That's not drawing - that is blending as in any other painting. You can see me do it time and time again in my pastel lessons.

As with any medium you can draw with that medium on the substrate to fix the composition and then "paint" over it with the same medium to produce a painting. That's why it is called a painting :2funny: :2funny:

As we are using some techniques to blend the pastel on the paper it can be seen as painting.  If you use oil pastels, it is painting without a doubt.  Drawing is something else ...

Just saw this.  I believe it is BOTH Nolan.  Like Steven, if you are using the edge of the pastel or pastel pencils and are using a drawing approach, hatching etc., it is clearly drawing.  If you are using side strokes with large chunky pastels, often with a blended underpainting or an alcohol and pastel underpainting it is very much painting to me and most Pastel artists think that this is the distinction.
