Hello all!

First I want to say that the class was great today Nolan. I never understood how to do shadows or tones. I think I have a better understanding now. I do have question though…will there be a template that you post for the spoon exercise from today?

Thanks!

Thanks so much Nolan.
You have so much patience! Very selfless endeavor to teach like this, going step by step with so much enthusiasm!
Great camera set up too!
I know it's all about practice practice and more practice.
Hope I get rid of my laziness!... At least as a gesture of gratitude to you for being such a great teacher!! :P

I'll be very pleased to get back on the normal PB broadcasts. I've no idea what was going on this time  :D I was seeing one thing, and everyone else was talking about something entirely different that was going on!  :crazy2:   I had Nolan shading a ball once I got it going, everyone else had something about some kind of styrofoam banana?!  :D Got it sorted in the end. Think I'll give the dogs a rest and have a go at the spoon. Very cool.  :coolsmiley:

A great thank you for this free class. Amazing result with the pencil.
I also found funny to "listen" to the chatbox but I would have needed a dictonary to understand everything, but I understood that you "guys" as Nolan says had great fun.

:2funny:   Anki, we do go on sometimes don't we?   :D

I love to watch Nolan & Dennis draw/paint, but I do get in a muddle when I try working along with them!  :crazy2: Just not quick enough  ;D   The chat box helps me put off getting frustrated with it, and very often others on the chat help me along when my internet is not so good. With so many different backgrounds it can get hilarious at times with the different interpretations! All great fun.  :yippee:

Dammit, forgot. Thursdays is the day after indoor soccer the night before. Always sluggish. I was on the exercise bike when the live broadcast was on - trying to get some blood pumping through tired legs - so missed it. Thankfully we have the Replay available when it gets posted!

Amazing work Lidiya & Doina :congrats:

They may have set the bar high, but don't be shy to post your drawings, remember that this stage of the classes is for beginners, so nobody is expecting to see perfect drawings.

Post your drawing no matter how bad you think it is. If I don't see it, I can't help you improve so that you can also reach the quality of the two drawings already posted O0

Well, I must say this spoon came out better than I had expected.  Thanks, Doina and Lidiya for paving the way and inspiring me to attempt it.

Nolan, thanks for walking us through this and choosing something challenging, yet doable.  I really enjoyed working with the kneadable eraser for the first time.  I am beginning to understand the difference in the pencils now - feel more comfortable using them.

I feel really good about doing this spoon, even though I was reluctant to start it.

I have only managed to watch half the lesson and am eager to get started.  There is no doubt that Nolan is the most fantastic teacher.  I really felt as though I excelled in his dog course only because he teaches in a way that I, as a beginner,  could understand. He has such patience and explains things which was easy for me to comprehend. Strangely enough, I was thinking about him this morning and his teaching methods which to my mind, are the greatest and we are indeed blessed to have him laying the foundation for our art endeavours.

Your spoon is excellent.  I love the highlight on the gemstone.  I added one just now so mine would look almost as good as yours.

ALSO:

Thanks, Nolan, Patricia, Scribe, and Bev S, and Sarah for your positive comments on my spoon.  Nolan, I'll take a stump (now that I am brave enough to use you) and soften out the shadow.

Lynn P,

It's from the free beginner class called Pencil Shading Techniques.  Nolan patiently describes every aspect of drawing - pencils, tonal values, shading, kneadable eraser, how to make a chisel point, etc.  The culminating activity is the spoon.

It is one of the best classes I've taken.  I learned so much.

Hope you do it.  I can just imagine you'll do a fantastic spoon.

Mea, It is so nice to hear you write that this is the best class you have taken as you have learned so much.  Well, all I can say, is that Nolan is a FANTASTIC teacher in getting his message across, for if you had taken the Dog Drawing Course, your whole drawing world would have expanded beyond expectation. As you can gather, I am one of his biggest fans for I just love the way he teaches and I will always be an avid follower of his.

Patricia,  I taught school (not art) for 23 years and Nolan is one of the best teachers I have ever seen.  Both he and Dennis make learning fun and non-threatening.

Your excellent spoon drawing is the perfect example of what we are talking about.

Sarah, come on, you can turn those cinnamon buns into a spoon handle.  I know you can.

Thanks to all who are still sitting on the sidelines for sending us such positive encouragement.  Jump in!

Just finished these this afternoon. The graph was difficult. The darker the pencil the more difficult to make it appear darker. Also the type of pencil used caused some variations.

Drawing the spoon was fun. I am not sure that I got the tip end of it correct, but am pleased with the rest. Thanks Nolan this was great practice.

Great work.

I dreamed about doing it free hand - now I'll try it.  You have inspired and challenged me to go to the next level.

Great tonal chart Bev, I still am surprised how much colour we can get from one simple pencil.
Cyril, your freehand spoon looks great, I hope to be able to draw freehanded again very soon, well...of course I can but my spoon would look more a toddlers drawing right now  :2funny: and even using a template makes drawing right now a real big challenge. But your rendition makes me want to try it, well done!!!

Sarah, I absolutely love your awesome spoon, it is so perfect  :smitten: I just LOVE every detail and my favourite oart is the stone. WOW!!! you managed to draw Nolan in that little stone. And I thought drawings his reflection in the Christmasballs where allready challenging. Congratulations on this perfect drawing, you are such a great artist and inspiration  :smitten:  :yippee:

Jill, love your drawing and all the details, wow you all are just great with drawing, I missed it a lot and looking at all these awesome, beautiful drawings is the best medication, inspiration and boost one can get and need to feel the love for drawing in my body streaming again :smitten: :yippee: . And yes, making decent photo's ís a challenge and one you did very well.

Jill, you too, thank you so much for your very kind words, they mean a lot to me, more then I ever thought myself :1hug:
Bev and Nolan, thank you for the great comments and encouragement :flowers: :1hug:

I am still surprised how quick I learned to draw again, it still feels sometimes awkward holding my pencil in my left hand, but not really unnatural. I only have to find a good way of sitting, I just can't find the right position, but I think that is more due to everything is still placed on my desk for my righthand drawing and painting. Now I work a lot in my own shadow, my lamp is also left of me, no problem with 'normal' drawing, but now I have allways this shadow on my paper. :2funny:

I just wanted to post my progress on my spoon. Yep, I'm still working on it. I've been kind of busy and I've also been have a hard time with the spoon as well. It's still in the beginning stages. There's not a lot done. I'm pretty proud of myself because it looks waaay better than what I thought it would. First time I ever really understood the shading process (even though I've taking drawing classes in school). I know I've probably gone too dark on some things and may need to lighten up some areas and some areas need to be a little darker. BUT.. here it is.

Your spoon is coming along very well.  I agree, this spoon drawing was a great learning experience.

My spoon.  It doesn't look like a metal spoon like some on here do.  I doesn't seem to be reflecting light.

RichKay,

Speaking from only a few steps ahead of you, I think it just needs more highlights which I hope you can do easily by erasing in the right places.

Otherwise, you did well.

I'm sure one of the more experienced artists will be of more help.

Your spoon looks good.  I'm sure it was the camera that gave it the tarnished silver look.  It's so real looking, I was going to try to polish it.

My second atempt. Harald
Title: Re: 2 Pencil Shading Techniques
Post by: nolan on March 03, 2014, 06:55:19 PM
Harald the cast shadow is too light / the same tonal value as on the spoon itself making both blend together.

Darken up the cast shadows directly against the spoon and then fade as normal - you want a good contrast between the cast shadow and the light edge of the spoon

Title: Re: 2 Pencil Shading Techniques

the light that is lighting your paper must come from the opposite side to your drawing hand. In other words if you are right handed the light must come from the left. You want as little shadows on the drawing as possible otherwise you are putting undue strain on your eyes, plus you will not be able to judge your tonal values correctly

Drawing is MUCH slower than painting. I guess it makes sense when you consider the size of a pencil point compared to brushes...

Pretty nice, just a small suggestion,  be careful of the edges of the spoon it should not be bumpy.  You could smooth it out.

Wasn't this a fun drawing!  You did well.

I agree with Danielle about the bumpiness.  Hope you can smooth it out easily.

Wow! so many excellent drawing on here. Instead of using the template, I decided to try free handing the spoon... it took forever and I kind of screwed up the last bit. Oh well, next time  8)

Still need to work on my scanning skills  :2funny:

Bob,

Wow, free hand!!  Great job.  I'd give the tip of the spoon just a bit more rounding off - otherwise, it's another beautiful spoon to add to our growing tea service.

Yes Mea it's specifically pointed to cut through the segments, haha I have some of these spoons and have never used them. yet!

Post by: Bobthebuzzed on March 07, 2015, 10:52:03 PM
:thankyou: Robin Mea and Natalie for the feedback.

Your right the tip is pointed, perhaps I should add serrations to really make it look like a grapefruit spoon  :2funny:

Yes I did freehand it, was to lazy to print and trace the temp, so i used a grid to help with placement... or does that not count as freehand?

:coffee: couldn't resist using that smiley anymore :P
Title: Re: 2 Pencil Shading Techniques
Post by: Bellarina on March 08, 2015, 03:06:13 AM
If you used a grid then it's not considered freehand.  At least this is how the dictionary defines freehand.

Excellent spoon, KathyS.  I'm still waiting for the tea party so we can all use our spoons.

I'd like to see the stone (jewel?) in the spoon look a bit darker to really set it off.  Then the highlights will make it shine a bit more.

So happy you are enjoying this.

Hey guys! It's the first time I have posted, and I just finished up the spoon drawing. What a great instructor Nolan is! Thanks for making the jump back into drawing an enjoyable one. It's been a long long time since I've put pencil to paper. So here goes!

Jim,

Welcome to the Paintbasket family.

You did a great job on the spoon.  It was one of my first drawing classes and I loved it.

Now we want to see more of your work.

I'm working on the onion and garlic still life at the moment so I'll be sure to post a pic when I'm finished. And look forward to your feedback, tips and suggestions for improvement!

Oh and it's Jon btw, but I am in Canada! Haha

Thanks again all,
Jon
